It was currently lunchtime, and 8 minutes before I needed to go and duel Ameil.

Lucia and I were currently having lunch at the usual spot and as always, Lucia was churning out a lot of noise pollution.

“I can’t believe you waited till the last minute to start preparing for the duel!”

Lucia said, with a dumbfounded expression on her face before taking a bite out of the ham sandwich she got for lunch today.

I may or may not have wasted a whole day that I could’ve spent preparing for the duel.

“Isn’t it a bit hypocritical for someone like you to say that?”

I said before turning to the last page in a text on dueling etiquette called “Duels for Dummies.”

“I’m sorry, when was the last time that I procrastinated dealing with something like this?”

“...In my defense, that novel was really good.”

“You read through it 15 times Otto! 15 fucking times!”

I just shrugged, dismissively.

“Have you at least gotten the gist of how dueling works, like the rules and stuff?”

She said, exasperatedly.

“Yeah, most of it was just common sense after all.”

Honestly, it was easier for me to learn how to duel then figure out how to play soccer.

“At least you’ll know when you’ve lost the match.”

“You say that as if it’s guaranteed that I’m gonna lose the duel.”

“That guy beat a top military official in a swordfight when he was just a toddler Otto! And it didn’t even take him that long, he won in the first few seconds of the match!”

“That’s great and all but I thought I needed to beat Ameil in a duel not a swordfight?”

I replied with a smug grin on my face.

“Alright smartass.”

“Still, I think that there’s a chance I can pull this off.”

“Yeah, maybe a meteorite will fall out of the sky and crack Ameil’s skull.”

She scoffed.

“That guy’s skull is probably too thick for something like that to take him out.”

I remarked, before getting up from my seat.

“Anyway I've got to get going now.”

“Ah it’s time already?”

“Just about.”

“Try not to get sidetracked on the way there.”

“No promises.”

And with that I took my leave.

Traveling to the rendezvous point took a bit longer than I expected, on account of the path being more muddy and sticky then the day prior.

When I had gotten to the rendezvous point I looked over the sword that I had snagged from an armory on my way there.

Unfortunately for me, it was in pretty rough shape.

Can’t say I’m that surprised though, the higher quality stuff must’ve already been snagged by combat class students.

And it’s not like having a better sword would really help me much against Ameil.

A few minutes later, Ameil arrived.

“Glad to see that you could make it Otto.”

He probably would’ve dragged me out here anyway if I hadn’t shown up.

“Let’s just get this over with.”

I said, before positioning my sword to be directly in front of me.

“Alright. Do you want me to start the match or would you like to?”

“You can begin the duel.”

In turn, Ameil just nodded and after a few seconds had passed began the match.

“Let the duel begin!”

The moment the match started, he came charging at me with his sword which was emitting a bright yellow glow, while intently staring at my sword.

He came at me so insanely fast that the path behind him became a little scorched by the heat that came off of him.

If it were anyone else dueling him at this moment, they probably would've just tried to hold their ground even if they knew that their efforts would be in vain.

I had other plans.

The moment Ameil got within a few feet of me, I let my sword fall to the floor.

Because of his speed, he couldn’t stop himself from plunging his sword straight through my chest unless he changed his direction.

And had it been anyone else making this split second decision, I would be pretty worried for my life right now.

But since it was Ameil, I was almost completely sure of what the outcome would be.

A few seconds after my sword fell to the ground, Ameil swerved around me and violently crashed into a tree.

In turn I simply just picked up my sword and followed the burn marks on the ground to Ameil.

I found him in a pretty bad state.

As his clothes were in tatters, blood was dripping down from his forehead, and scratches and scrapes now covered almost every inch of his body.

The area near where he had crash landed wasn’t doing much better either.

A tree was uprooted, most of the grass had been decimated and there was now a large crater where his glowing sword had fallen.

After I got close enough to him, I just pointed my sword at his head before saying.

“Looks like it’s your loss, Ameil.”

“Why the hell did you do that?”

He cut straight to the chase.

“Why did I do what?”

I remarked after lowering my blade.

“Why did you drop your sword all of a sudden in the middle of the duel? You know that you could’ve died right?”

“Nah, there was no chance of that happening Ameil.”

I said confidently, before removing my jacket and wrapping it tightly around his forehead to try and stop the bleeding.

“And why is that?”

His voice was full of anger.

“Because I was dueling you, Ameil. You might be a lot of things, but from what I’ve gathered, you aren’t a cold blooded killer.”

Sure he’s stubborn, annoying, and dense but above all else he’s a decent person.

“So…you pulled that stunt because you knew that I wouldn’t risk killing you to win the duel?”

“Precisely.”

“Guess I was wrong about you Otto...”

He said after coughing up some blood.

“You’re wrong about a lot of things.”

I cut in, before helping him to his feet.

“Now come on, let's get you to the infirmary. I don’t want to be indebted to your family for the rest of my life because I accidentally killed you.”

“Heh. I’m starting to see why Luci hangs out with you.”
