"I'm a monster."

I whispered and the words echoed in my mind. Over and over again. Then the words halted.

"No," I refuted, contradicting myself, "I'm not a monster. You are," I impeached, pointed my blood-stained knife at the two dead corpses.

Drip drop.

Drip drop.

Water trickled down from the ceiling.

I hated the sound of the water, splashing on the cold hard ground, droplet by droplet; it annoyed me immensely. Though I didn't know why I hated the sound.

I stood slowly, dropping the knife in the process, after attempting to wipe the blood off my torn white clothes. It was time to leave this prison.

"Well, I guess these clothes aren't white anymore," I chuckled dryly. My mouth parched from the absence of water throughout this event.

Glancing at myself through the shattered mirror, I smiled, showing my red-blooded teeth. Falling back into a crouch, I looked closer, each of my hands grasped either side of the jagged mirror. I could feel the shards of glass piercing my skin as a looked at myself.

My pale skin was a stark contrast to both my red hands and lips. My blonde hair reached my feet and over. It was rough, unkempt and lengthy. I swayed from side to side unsteadily, after I stood again. Heaving the mirror at the wall. I watched dazed as it smashed into pieces.

"It looks beautiful, "I thought.

Turning away, I drunkenly trudged out of my cell.

I cackled into the silence hallway, enjoying the sound of my maniacal laughter bounce off the walls. "I'm drunk on blood," I shouted.

And then I stopped and turned around for a final look. In my cell were the two, now deceased, guards that used to take care of me. Well at least, that was what they told the white cloaked men. In reality, they never did. After treating me like dirt, they had finally got what they deserved.

To lie there, unmoving and lifeless, as I did.

The keys to the outside world jingled in my hands as I mindlessly toyed with them. I didn't know what to do… I had never left the lab before.

Thoughts entered my mind.

Dark thoughts.

"Maybe the outside world was worse. Maybe it was better to have just compiled and stayed in this hell hole." I thought.

But I couldn't do that, and curiosity overtook my caution. I had put myself in a position that I couldn't turn back from. All I could do was continue to stumble out of my cell.

Left.

Right.

Left.

Right.

Again and again, I reminded myself that everyone is dead. I had killed them.

I killed them one by one slowly and carefully and it all started with Tess. It always started with Tess. So I planted a virus into her, only I could stop. Tess was innocent, but that didn't mean she wasn't left out of my plan. She didn't even belong in this world, she told me herself. She said that her birth was a mistake, and she was born to die as my scapegoat. Therefore, when Tess died, everything fell into place, and I finally knew something the Lab didn't know.

No one could call me out or point fingers at me. No one would even think that I had done it. I was her best friend or maybe more of her only friend. Our relationship was so close that people would find it weird if I was the one to kill her.

Then, the virus spread. Each person had a distinct blood type, so they had a more aggressive reaction to the virus, like my guards. Then all I had to do was watch them fall into the arms of death and finish the bits that the virus couldn't.

Other lab rats who had not died yet called out to me. They screamed for help, a release from the pain that was worse than any experiment.

"Help," They would scream.

And "Die." I would answer.

Misery, sorrow, and hate for everything in the Lab trapped my soul. So concerning me, if they were left alive, I would be trapped forever in remorse.

I knew I was a lab rat. The doctors used me for any unstable experiments that they could use on their previous customers. As a result, hatred consumed me from the inside out, that I knew that I couldn't do anything about it.

Then my breakthrough happened.

Everything fell into place. When I became smarter, my brain became enhanced far beyond an average human. I became different.

I was still No.785.

I was still a lab rat, but I had changed. I had mutated without the Lab knowing. It was mind-blowing, the lab wasn't everything like I had thought. They were like me; skin, bone, flesh, and blood. I didn't know how I knew it but I just did.

My thoughts came to a halt when I reached my destination. It was the science office. The room nobody was allowed to enter not even the guards. Grabbing the handle, I opened it and stepped in. Papers scattered all the floor and desk. There was nobody here as they were all killed, by me. Just to make sure, I sniffed the air, looking for any type of human scent.

"Nope," I muttered before stepping towards the long gray door. It was calling for me.

"Come to me, come and leave," I could hear it say. I pressed the door handle carefully excepting some kind of defensive mechanism before remembering that the system which watched my every move was offline. Today was the day that once in a year they made the system go offline.

'Because they had to update it' I remembered my guard say when I had asked the question. I remembered asking with my eyes widened like a puppy. I recalled the way I would tilt my head like a dumb puppy to gain their affections. They would always let their guard around me, thinking I was some child. Though they would still abuse me.

Nevertheless, I still warily touched the handle you never knew what could happen, in the lab. Opening the door, I let out a breath I did not know I was holding. Finally, I was free.
