A few days had passed since the start of the year and the city, with cold winds blowing to it, was beginning to regain its normal calmness.

I had been summoned to a place which made me feel very uncomfortable.

「It’s a big deal desu yo, it’s a crisis for the store desu!」

Pretoga, a silver haired catkin lady, looked up to the heavens and exclaimed, while a velvety, shiny furred cat on my lap affectionately “meow”.

Perhaps startled by that loud voice, the big bird perched on my shoulder flapped its wings and flew away and the dog lying at my feet glanced at the cat woman with an annoyed expression. It went away too.

Then, a monkey appeared, clinging to my arm while raising its voice! There’s also a small horse who came and lay down beside my feet.

Yeah, I was called at the sweet and fluffy animal café run by the Schenker family.

Perhaps they were bored because there’s no customers, or maybe the animals had been taking turns coming close to me to demand skinship. I wasn’t even able to drink my coffee.

「So, what’s the crisis?」

The cat woman, who has silver hair tied in a ponytail, stopped her looking at the heaven pose and shouting……

When I asked Pretoga, the manager of the store, she started moving again with her over the top gestures as if a playback button was pressed on a video. I had her sit next to me.

「It’s because of that! It’s a crisis desu!」

I think the one’s having a crisis is your head.

「Our breadwinner, Merida-chan the cat, is having……an affair desu yo!!」

Saying this, the manager pointed her hand up the catwalk a short distance from the table where I was sitting.

Sitting there, close to the entrance of the store, was a beautiful cat with long, white and gray fur.

Its green eyes, shimmering like jewels, were unperturbed by the commotion around it, as it stared intently at the entrance of the store.

「Is it a male? Or a female?」

「Girl desu!」

I’m not sure why I even asked that since if you think about it, are there even male or female magic constructs?

And what’s more, an affair……that cat is a magic construct!

They don’t reproduce in the first place so they don’t love or anything like that.

「What do you mean by affair? Are you saying it fell in love with some cat?」

「That’s not it! With a regular customer-san, a regular customer-san! Merida-chan’s sweetheart is a cute oneesan desu yo」

「Eh? A cat loves a human?」

「People love cats too! Cats love people in the same way desu yo!」

Thinking about it, that may be true.

……..no, it’s not, don’t get fooled.

If it were a normal cat, that may be true but Merida is a magic construct.

“You found someone you like? Congratulations” is not something I can say.

No matter how fluffy, cute, and adorable she may be, her real identity is a weapon.

「Magic constructs are originally intended for military use so they don’t have that kind of functionality.」

「But even soldiers and warhorses fall in love, don’t they?」

「That’s a problem……」

A magic construct was originally a disposable military weapon.

However, due to me dramatically extending their lifespan, they gained egos.

However, if cars and missiles start moving around with egos, we’ll be in big trouble….or perhaps we’re already doomed.

Even if we can’t control them right now, we should at least try to understand them, right?

So, in order to make a step forward in the study of their ego acquisition process, I decided to place small, relatively harmless animals in various locations and have them keep records of them.

I originally wanted to leave such work to the military but due to the nature of magic constructs, I could not ask them to turn them over to use even if they took records.

I feel a little uncomfortable saying this but I’m not a member of the military.

That means, officially, I shouldn’t access any of their records.

So, I have no choice but to conduct my own research in my laboratory.

There are several stores in this city that were built for magic construct research and this café is one of them.

The manager of this animal café, Pretoga, was making a big fuss, hugging herself, pursing her lips and pointing them above, while ranting three sentences in a novel-like manner to explain the situation.
