Long Past Dawn

Chapter 9 - 9~ Waking Up

"Wake up!"

Silence. Everything is quiet and I start to think that I used the wrong phrase before he sucks in a raspy breathe and blinks. It worked.

I feel my legs give out, it worked. "I-I'm sorry... I'm so sorry!"

I feel like a little kid that's about to start crying because one of their parents caught them stealing a cookie. I just don't know what I would have done if that hadn't worked.

"Whoa, you did it," Flash says before running a circle around me and then giving me a hand up, "How'd ya do it?"

You were standing there, did you not see me? "I just tried....."

"Well it worked that's for sure," He says whistling, before going over to Martian Manhunter. Batman, Wonderwoman, Superman and Green Lantern follow him to crowd around him and I squeeze my way between all of them so that I can be in the circle too.

He looks me straight in the eye and says, "How were you able to break my connection?"

Welp that's the question I want the answer to too, so until I know the answer you're kinda out of luck...

"Well it was really weird one minute you had started and the next you retracted your hands and wouldn't respond to us not to mention that Dawn went cuckoo and started screaming when she saw you and then puked before blacking out," Flash says eager to give the play by play. You don't have to give him the whole play by play, just saying Flash.

Martian Manhunter seems to take that in before turning back to me, "You..... never mind. I didn't find out anything else except that it seems an instinct makes it almost impossible to be in her mind for long before, well, we all know what happens now."

He saw. He knows. Wait, saw what? Knows what? Honestly, I'm getting sick of this almost split personality thing. Oooooh, it would be kinda cool if I had a split personality like in those comics. Ah but that's not important right now.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to freeze you, I kinda just lost control of it all and..... I'm so sorry...."

"Back on Mars, it was a crime to invade one's mind without consent. This was no different, even if you told yourself it was fine some part of you thought otherwise, I'm not wrong, am I?"

As expected of a mind reader he hit the nail on the head, I just can't believe he's forgiving me so easily. "Yea-"

"Ah, Manhunters back in action I see!" I whip around to see that Green Arrow and Aquaman come in with two other people I vaguely recognize.

"Good to see you again," Aquaman says coming closer as I ponder who the other two are. One of them, a woman, is wearing something almost like a black leotard which outlines her curves along with black tights and heavy knee-high leather boots, she also has a leather jacket and c.o.c.ker on, her blonde hair is loose behind her, the other is a man in a blue two-piece suit with a black tie and matching hat, as for his face.... well he doesn't have one, I can see brown-black hair from under his hat and he has ears but his face is completely blank, like he has no facial features at all. I feel like I've seen the woman before but I have no clue who the man could be.

The woman comes up to me and stands straight up, even with my five foot five height she's still almost a head taller than me, "Dawn Amor?" I nod, to scared to really speak. She looks me up and down once, "Hmmm, I'm not going to go easy on you."

I'm sorry what? It's not even been a day and I'm already getting threats and or challenges from people I don't know? Ah, why can't I just go back to my normal, boring life?

"Ah! Birdie! I heard you were coming!" Flash says running over to her. Wait, birdie? What female superhero has a bird in her name? Oh, no..... he can't mean Black Canary, can he?

"Wait.... are you Black Canary....?" I meekly say. She just nods before going over to the rest of the group who seem to be probing Martian Manhunter. I am so dead, so so so so dead.

"You going to pick your jaw up off the ground anytime soon?" Flash says with laughter obvious in his tone. "What, are you scared now that the Birdie is your teacher, would you rather have oui?"

Oui? Does he even know french? Then again I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't point out France on a map.

"I really don't think that means what you think it means," I say before heading towards the rest of the group, leaving Flash to wonder in vain what he said wrong.

I almost completely forget about the man in the two-piece suit, until he taps my shoulder. "Dawn Amor, age 13?"

I'm somehow interested in how he can speak when he doesn't have a mouth. "Yes, that's me. How did you know?" Well obviously someone told him but I just want to watch him talk without a mouth.

"Hmmm, who knows." He replies before going over to the group. I have no clue if I like his cryptic a.s.s answers or not but man it's funny to see him talking without a mouth, like how does the guy do it? Is it some really good mask?

"Ahhh, Question my boy over there is a hard nut to crack," Flash says running over to me yet again and propping his elbow on top of my head, why must everyone be taller than me? I'm pretty tall for my age but these people are six-foot giants! "Say something about the pyramids and aliens and well...I still haven't heard the end of that one."

"Are you really 25?" I say, ducking under so that his elbow isn't on my head anymore, honestly, I'm starting to think this guy's mental age is younger than me.

"I will have you know that I'm a respectable a.d.u.l.t Miss Amor!" Flash says in a faked hurt tone before he pounces on me and ruffles my hair until you would think it was a life form of its own.

"What are you two doing over there? Come here now." Batman says in his usual stern voice that makes both me and the Flash jump.

"Yes, sir!" Flash says, saluting with his left hand before racing over like a puppy ready to play, all I can do is sigh and follow him, trying to fix my now ruffled hair.

I'd say mental age maybe 12? Yeah, 12 sounds about right for him.

"So, what's the plan?" Flash says, bouncing on his heels a bit. I'm starting to wonder if he ever sits still, probably not.

"Well for now since we don't know how far Dawn's powers go and to avoid a future accident," Batman says, yet again going back to picking his words carefully, you mean me freezing someone, you can say it, we all know that's what you mean. "Dawn should stay here so she can both train her powers to not lose control and we can also do more tests, such as physical mental or even genetic tests that we didn't have time to do yesterday."

Wait, me? Stay here? But what about mom and Charlie? Ugh, they'll never let me stay here with these so-called hypocrites. "But what about my parents? I'm also going to need a couple changes of clothes."

It feels weird to call Charlie a parent but I don't know what else to call him right now.

Wonderwoman and Batman exchange another glance and I'm really starting to think about saying something about but Batman says something before I do, "I'll take you home so you can pack clothes and I can explain to your parents what's happening."

Somehow I really can't imagine Batman sitting in my living room talking with mom and Charlie while sitting in that old floral catastrophe that they call a chair. Yep, can't see it. Ever.

Wonderwoman gives him a look and whispers in his ear, even though they're on the opposite side as me I can somehow hear them clear as day, "Bruce, is it really alright to put her through this? She's just a kid."

Batman only nods but there's something in his eyes that I've never seen before. It's grief.
