“So now you have to find another man to marry?”

I couldn’t bear to answer that while facing Caron’s flawlessly sparkling face. Instead, I nodded slowly and took a bite of the roll cake.

My mood was so low that I just wanted to sweep the whole incident under a carpet, but the cloud-like whipped cream on the tip of my tongue somewhat salvage me. Caron looked at me with pity, then picked up a new cup and added some milk tea. Cinnamon powder sprinkled on top shimmered like it would shatter in the sunlight.

“Will the engagement definitely be annulled if you find one?”

“I do not know either. I think he’s just trying to put me in a difficult position…”

Warm milk tea was put into my hand.

“I can’t even tell anyone. How funny is that? Even a passing dog will laugh at me if I say I have to find another man to break off my engagement with the crown prince.”

“Would there ever be a passing dog that does that, then be sure to bring that dog to me. I’ll give it a great scolding!”

Caron gave me a grim look and raised her fist in the air. Her appearance was so cute, and as she smiled, the milk tea in my cup disappeared without a trace. The culprit who stole it was, of course, my lips. Entera chef’s skills were so good that my corset burst whenever I visited.

“Then…What do you think of my older brother?”

“Your brother?”

Sir Pancion Entera, or the heir to the Entera Duchy (also called the young duke).

I recalled a man who exuded an unrivaled presence among the crowded aristocrats at one end of the party. His height was also one of the causes, but he was a very outstanding person with his unique elegant features and the ability to dominate the crowd with a voice that sounded like it was dipped in honey.

Since he had a strong physique of a knight, it would be difficult to give a soft impression. Was it also because the look in his eyes was always so serious and deep? He was a man similar to Nezar, but far different.

“I don’t think asking how I think of him would mean it’s okay taking him as my marriage partner, isn’t that right?”

“That makes sense.”

“The wall around him is too high. No matter what I say, he won’t look at me. He would just reply ‘I see’ out of courtesy and then leave without much thought.”

How am I able to find a suitable man at this rate?

At my sigh, Caron’s eyes widened.

“Weren’t you and my older brother acquainted? At least that’s what I heard.”

I would have to take many things into account before saying that we knew each other conclusively.

First of all, we knew each other’s names, but the number of encounters was so few that they could be counted on fingers. Furthermore, we barely exchanged enough to be called a decent conversation. Could I really say that we knew each other?

“Has he ever talked about me?”

“Whenever I talk about Kate, I think he listens without reserve. He did give some response or reaction from time to time…”

“What did he say?”

“Well, like you said, ‘I see’ or something like that.”

She said he responded, but it seemed more like the sound he uttered because he had nothing to say.

To my best knowledge, sir Pancion was twenty-nine this year. If a high-ranking nobleman was twenty-nine years old, regardless of whether he was an heir or not, nine out of ten, no, ninety-nine out of a hundred should have been married. It didn’t make sense that the second son of Duke Entera hadn’t had a fiancée ever since the age of twenty-four, before the war broke out. As I pondered the reason, a vague memory suddenly came to my mind.

“Come to think of it, I think I heard that the successor of Entera met with someone before. Hmm…Lockherd definitely said so. Is he single again now?”

In an instant, like a pine tree hit by a snowstorm, Caron’s expression sank coldly. I wondered if I had made a slip of tongue, so I quietly looked away from her and chewed on my roll cake before she opened her mouth again.

“That would be nice, but unfortunately it’s hard to be sure. There is this one strange woman. But that doesn’t necessarily need to be the case, they might just have some business with each other.”

Have some matter concerning each other? Could there be such a strange reference to lovers? Caron lowered her eyelids and gently stirred the tea in her cup. Seeing this, it certainly felt like she and Pancion were related by blood. In particular, her earnest yet attractive voice was very similar to his.

“I… back when being discriminated by the Entera family, you still valued me very much. Had it not been for you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. In that sense, I was able to grow into the me today all thanks to Kate. Thanks to you, I realised that if I have power, I don’t have to be ignored or hated by anyone.”

The cold tea swirled gently along her teaspoon. Since I was sitting right next to her, naturally, I could see it. I waited quietly with my mouth closed, wondering what Caron would say next.

“But I had a hard time not being hated by people around. In order not to be a lacking person for the family and Kate, I have been striving constantly…I guess I still have to work harder.”

What kind of woman was it that made such words come out of Caron’s mouth? Still, I couldn’t ask carelessly about the affair of someone else’s family.

“What are you trying so hard for? Caron, you are the sweetest and loveliest person I know. I like you the most right now. Even more than Nezar!”

The last sentence came out unintentionally. Now, at the mere mention of his name, my shoulders trembled a little. Bring another man to him, how could he say that? Of course it was easy for him to say, since he didn’t love me in that sense. Yet, he said he needed me? If he needed me that much, he should have at least pleased me even with empty words!

I grabbed Caron’s hand and leaned against the sofa’s backrest. Caron, who smiled like an angel, gestured lightly for the afternoon tea set to be taken away. Subsequently, she followed me and leaned against the sofa then whispered in a low voice.

“It would be nice if Kate married my brother. That way, we can meet every day and have tea together.”

“Aren’t you going to get married as well? In any case, our relationship might even grow distant.”

“I will proceed with it very late then. As you get older, it will be difficult to have children, so it will also be difficult to get married. Then, I will shamelessly grow older in Entera, and when Kate has a child, I will be the godmother.”

“What? No way, Caron. Your superior and beautiful bloodline must be preserved. I’d rather be the godmother!”

Caron covered her mouth and laughed. Looking at her face in silence, I lowered my voice and asked quietly, just like she did.

“Is there any woman Nezar would like?”

“Um, this is only something I’ve heard, but it is said that he hasn’t been interested in women for as long as one could remember. And yet, Kate seems to be an exception…”

Caron inhaled sharply before a series of unfamiliar names flowed out of her mouth.

“It could all be false rumours though. If it is someone 20 years old and comes from a long-established family…There is Lady Caroline of the Aktor County and Lady Lily of Amasra County… Who else? There is a someone who has made her debut but has not gotten engaged, she is…”

Caron’s quiet, calming voice led my mind into a distant world of darkness. It was because it had only been over a day since the victory celebration party ended, and the fatigue in my whole body still lingered. Even after I closed my eyes, Caron’s words continued. At the same time, the world around me blurred.
