At 6:50 in the morning, the students who had finished their morning exercises returned to the classroom. The bell had rung for a round, and the morning self-study was about to begin.

After energetically running two laps around the school field, the students were not in a mood to study. Restless voices could be heard from the other side of the door panel.

Bai Ruan, the teacher-in-charge of the second year fourth class of high school, walked to the back door of his classroom and stopped.

The man looked like he was only twenty-two years old. Although he claimed to be twenty-five years of age instead, he still looked younger. At this moment, the young teacher was showing half of his face from behind the small window as he cautiously looked inside.

While the homeroom teacher was at the back door peeking, nine out of ten students wanted to catch his appearance, but Bai Ruan’s expression was not quite right. His jaw was tight, his expression alert, and his hands on the edge of the window trembled slightly. It didn’t seem like he was here to catch students misbehaving, but was here to be caught instead.

His gaze circled around the sea of students and quickly locked onto a boy in the last row of the classroom.

The student was tall, with wide shoulders and long legs which were slightly bent. He was hunched down on the desk, taking a nap. The length of his hair that didn’t meet the school regulations covered half the back of his neck, and seemed like strands of silk. Black smoke constantly poured from his body, surrounding him. Nobody appeared to notice anything, and it seemed that only Bai Ruan could see it.

Bai Ruan looked at the boy with a weeping face, silently doing psychological preparations for himself.

This is human society, not the deep mountains and old forests. No one can bite people randomly. People here live in civilisation, harmony, justice, under a legal system…

Bai Ruan was chanting the core socialist values to himself for self-assurance when suddenly, the boy sleeping on the table looked up without any warning!

The teacher shivered and was about to hide when the boy quickly turned his head. Like a beast smelling the scent of its prey, his eyes were like a spear, scorchingly sharp and full of wildness, steadily heading towards the small window at the back door.

——A pair of wolf-like eyes.

“Ah!” Bai Ruan whizzed back two meters away. His adrenaline was rushing, and his temple twitched non-stop.

The boy’s eyebrows raised slightly and he raised his chin with a puzzled look, looking towards the back door.

Bai Ruan’s mind suddenly turned blank. Driven by his instinct to avoid predators, he jumped and sprinted all the way back to the homeroom teacher’s office that was ten meters away, closed the door and locked it all in one go!

That was so frightening! Bai Ruan leaned on the door, breathing heavily, and pressed his butt against it. Promptly, a strange spherical bulge appeared on the back of his dark trousers. As soon as he pressed against it, the ball collapsed and disappeared. No one knew that it was actually a soft, round, and white tail.

Bai Ruan was a demon, a rabbit demon.

His original form was the most common breed, the Chinese white rabbit. In the pet market, one was sold for fifteen dollars while a pair for twenty-five. They all had common traits of having white fur, red eyes and upright ears; they were very common in the wild. Today, the lop-eared rabbits, begonia rabbits, and angora rabbits had steadily replaced the status of Chinese white rabbits. Bai Ruan often laughed at himself for being a Chinese garden rabbit.

As a rabbit with a poor self-preservation ability and a high chance of becoming a predator’s meal every minute, Bai Ruan’s survival success was due to pure luck. He had originally lived in the mountains and forests. One day, he was bitten by a wolf when he was out of his den searching for food. After escaping by chance, he was rescued by a Taoist priest who was practicing nearby.

The Taoist priest was young, undisciplined and playful. He called Bai Ruan “Brother Rabbit” and gave him spiritual energy just for fun. It was originally a joke when he taught the rabbit how to cultivate. However, it turned out that Bai Ruan was quite savvy and had managed to truly cultivate after a few tries.

Regarding demons, some Taoist priests hated them while some felt that they didn’t matter. It just so happened that this Taoist priest belonged to the category of being indifferent. Not only was he apathetic, he also felt that if he could properly train demons, it would show how powerful he was. Feeling pleased with himself, he changed how he addressed Bai Ruan and called him a little apprentice. He also said that Bai Ruan’s original form was white and soft, and his name Bai Ruan was very suitable.1

After Bai Ruan became refined, he practiced in a Taoist temple for a few years, until this unreliable Taoist master intended to go on a journey all by himself.

At that time, Bai Ruan had only been in human form for five years, and his appearance and mentality were similar to that of a five-year-old human child. After hearing that Master was going on a journey without taking him, he was so anxious that he hugged a small grass nest and slipped into Master’s bedroom in the middle of the night. Putting his little dumpling-white face on the edge of Master’s bed, he looked at the man aggrievedly but did not dare to speak.

The Taoist priest woke up in the middle of the night, and in the darkness, there was a white face beside his bed.

He cried out in fright, “Fuck!”

The five-year-old Xiao Bai Ruan2 looked at him innocently. “Master, what is wrong?”

The Taoist priest was taken aback. “It was you?”

Xiao Bai Ruan asked sweetly, “Master, what is fuck?”

The Taoist was silent for a moment, touched his bare chin, and gently said, “… At midnight, the evil spirits are breeding. When you suddenly wake up at this time, bad energy will easily enter your body. What I’d just chanted was to discharge the bad energy from the body.”

Xiao Bai Ruan tried copying, “Fuck, hehe.”

The Taoist priest was rendered speechless, “……”

He continued, “This chant is used by adults and children cannot use it. If children use this chant, it will have a counterproductive effect, causing more bad energy to enter the body.”

Xiao Bai Ruan was taken aback and hurriedly shut his mouth tightly.

The other continued, swiftly changing the subject, “By the way, why are you squatting at the head of my bed in the middle of the night?”

Xiao Bai Ruan took Master’s hand in his, hugged it tightly, and pleaded pitifully, “Can Master take me along with you on your journey? Please don’t throw me back into the mountains and make me live there by myself. I’m afraid the wolf will come and bite me. It hurts when the wolf bites me.”

The Taoist priest was satisfied with his answer and said, “You have such a weak cultivation foundation and can’t even beat a chicken. How can I leave you alone? Don’t worry, a place to live has been arranged for you.”

The little rabbit demon breathed a sigh of relief.

The Taoist priest waved his hand. “Go back to sleep.”

Xiao Bai Ruan placed the small grass nest on the pillow of the Taoist priest and said, “I want to sleep with Master.”

The Taoist priest looked at him disgustedly, “Why?”

Xiao Bai Ruan grieved pitifully, “I had a nightmare and dreamt of a wolf.”

Because of the trauma of almost losing his life, Xiao Bai Ruan was most of all afraid of wolves in his life. He was also scared of lions, tigers and leopards, but those were only ordinary fears. When it came to wolves, they were completely at the level of psychological terror. Before the age of seven, Xiao Bai Ruan’s scalp would always prickle in fright as long as he heard the word “wolf”. The Taoist priest knew about this and reluctantly moved the pillow to make room for his apprentice.

Bai Ruan placed a small nest made up of grass next to Master’s pillow, turned into his original rabbit form, got into it and fell asleep peacefully.

A few days later, the Taoist priest began his journey.

Before setting off, he entrusted Bai Ruan to his friend who had stayed in the city for many years. Bai Ruan was reluctant to be apart from his master at first. But once he heard that there were no wolves in the city and children were able to go out without having the fear of being taken away by them, he joyously settled down. After that, Bai Ruan grew up like ordinary human children under the care of his adoptive parents. He went through elementary school, middle school, high school, and university; from the elementary entrance examinations, all the way to the university entrance examinations, nothing was left out.

……

“Ahh…” Bai Ruan drooped his head and sighed sadly.

In the morning self-study time, all the homeroom teachers went to check their respective classes’ self-study situation. There was no one in the office except Bai Ruan. He went to sit down at his desk and opened the small, locked drawer at the bottom.

Many civilians on duty were accustomed to putting some snacks in the office and eating them during their free time at work. Bai Ruan was no exception. The small locked drawer was filled with his favorite things, such as sweet bamboo and apple wood for teeth grinding, straw cakes, and grain straw rings. Those were snacks that were almost equivalent to human biscuits and nuts.

Bai Ruan took out a piece of fragrant grass biscuit and nibbled on it with his petal-like mouth. Thinking of the boy who he’d just seen through the back door of the classroom, waves of instinctive fear came crashing into his heart.

The boy who had been sleeping in the last row was named Lang Jing Feng. He was an excellent athlete in track and field and had just transferred to Bai Ruan’s class yesterday. It was said that his family was rich and powerful, and his temperament was extremely stubborn. In his previous private school, he had injured a male teacher. The situation of beating a teacher was quite bad, and no one knew how Lang Jing Feng’s family had cleared it. In short, Lang Jing Feng was not punished, on the contrary, he had successfully transferred to No. 2 High School and was placed into Bai Ruan’s class.

At first, the teacher knew that there was a troublemaker transfer student who was coming to his class, but he didn’t care. Although he was gentle and unassuming, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t dealt with thorny students before. It wasn’t until he met the person in real life that this poor White Rabbit teacher understood what ‘a bolt from the blue’ was. This Lang Jing Feng was actually a wolf demon!

If it was only a wolf demon, Bai Ruan could bear it. After all, wolf demons were different from wolves, rational and intelligent, and it was impossible for them to harm him for no reason. But the terrible thing was that this little wolf demon didn’t know how to restrain his demonic energy. When he was in the classroom yesterday, he had been immersed in the ultra-high concentration of the wolf demon energy. He trembled in fear due to the terrifying energy emitted by his natural enemy. His nerves were very tense throughout the lesson, and his shirt was soaked with cold sweat after one period.

Moreover, due to emotional tension, Bai Ruan’s human figure was a little unstable. The round tail behind his buttocks appeared for a while. For a short moment, he did not dare to turn around to write on the blackboard.

“All students read the third paragraph together. Three, two, one, start,” Teacher Bai ordered the whole class.

The students all looked down and read the text. While no one was looking at him, Bai Ruan quietly used his hands and pressed his tail back, and then swiftly turned to write on the blackboard.

… This student of his didn’t even conceal his demonic energy. At first glance, this was a second generation demon! Thinking of his embarrassing performance in class yesterday, Bai Ruan was so bitter that he ground his teeth against the straw cake.

“Concealing demonic energy” referred to the concealment of one’s demonic energy in the diaphragm. In the situation where one didn’t conceal their demonic aura, other demons would be able to distinguish what they were by smell. If they were able to completely hide it, other demons would not be able to recognise them.

Concealment of demonic energy was not an innate ability. One must practice, just like Bai Ruan who steadily cultivated himself step by step. Concealing one’s demonic aura was a piece of cake. As a rabbit demon with low strength and a desire to avoid any possible trouble, Bai Ruan had always been hiding his 24 hours a day.

But some beings were just not good at restraining their demonic energy.

Children of demons had no need to cultivate as they were born as such. These monsters who relied on blood to escape cultivation were called second generation demons. Since they did not have a step-by-step process of practical training, their abilities were often ordinary. Not to mention the use of demonic power to cast spells, even simple spells might not be done well. Lang Jing Feng was obviously such a demon.

This guy was not only a good-for-nothing in the human world, but also a good-for-nothing in the monster world.

After eating a piece of grass cake, Bai Ruan took out two pieces of the dessert with a sad face and stacked them together.

Lang Jing Feng was terrible for not restraining his demonic aura. If it was only like this, Bai Ruan could have forced himself to overcome his fear of natural enemies as much as possible, but Lang Jing Feng’s horror was much more than that.

Bai Ruan had followed The Taoist Master for several years. After The Taoist Master went on his wandering journey, he left a lot of precious ancient Taoism books for Bai Ruan. Bai Ruan had studied some by himself over the years. In the past two years, he had learnt how to use his demon power to open his eyes.3 After opening the eyes of the sky, Bai Ruan could see the merits of people and demons.

Merit seemed to be a kind of smoke that lingered around the body. People with high merit were golden or white, and those with low merit were gray or black. The merit of ordinary people was so weak that it was almost invisible. However, this Lang Jing Feng, who at a young age did not know how many bad things he had done, was immersed deeply in black smoke as dark as ink. That sight made Bai Ruan’s eyes widen in dismay. For the past two years he had rarely seen a person with such low merit. The fear of being in contact with Lang Jing Feng became even deeper.

Snacks could help to alleviate emotional anxiety. After a few pieces of grass cakes were knocked off, Bai Ruan gradually calmed down and once again, gave himself psychological counseling.

As the homeroom teacher, he couldn’t evade his responsibilities as a teacher. Self-study classes must be supervised as usual, and Chinese lessons must be carried out well.

Moreover, although this Lang Jing Feng was notorious and his merits were also terribly low, he didn’t do anything out of the ordinary except for obviously not attending classes all day. As a teacher, he should avoid denying a student’s future because of their past mistakes. Bai Ruan corrected his mindset and warned himself not to be prejudiced due to his position.

After the self-counseling was completed, Bai Ruan regained his morale. He brushed the grass cake crumbs off his body, walked to the mirror, straightened his tie, combed his hair and tried to put on a fierce expression with a light cough.

However, what was reflected in the mirror was a face with a non-threatening natural expression.

Bai Ruan had a small face, white skin, exquisite features and soft lines. He had a cute look. With a thin body, he looked like a young college student. It was hilarious for him to put on a fierce expression.

“Whew…” Bai Ruan was helpless. He took a deep breath, mentally cheered to bring his spirits up and walked back into the classroom.

Most of the students in Bai Ruan’s class either consciously or unconsciously hurriedly lowered their heads to read when Bai Ruan entered the classroom. As a result, the demon in the last row seemed particularly eye-catching. Lang Jing Feng had his hands in his pockets and his head was leaning against the back wall of the classroom. With a handsome and arrogant face, he stared at the front in a daze. His straight long leg stretched out the aisle in an imposing manner, and the dark negative merits lingered around him, making him look even more frightening.

Bai Ruan’s full ambition of “reconstructing the tail of a crane” vented only as far as a fart4 as soon as he stepped into the classroom. Under the physiological deterrence of the high concentration energy of natural enemies, Bai Ruan was like ice cream melting under the scorching sun which collapsed quickly and became a pool of sticky sweet water. He glanced at Lang Jing Feng, and wanted to pretend that he didn’t see him. But at this time, Lang Jing Feng’s deskmate also happened to look up at Bai Ruan.

Lang Jing Feng’s deskmate was Zhang Tao. He was an honest, hard-working boy with a staid5 personality. He was currently the class representative of Bai Ruan’s language period. He was usually responsible for sending homework, collecting homework and issuing Chinese papers and had a lot of contact with Bai Ruan.

Zhang Tao looked at Bai Ruan and then glanced at Lang Jing Feng with a frown. He was obviously quite dissatisfied with this sluggard student. His small eyes were filled with fierce complaints!

Zhang Tao, “…”

Teacher Bai, please take care of my deskmate!

Looking at Zhang Tao, Bai Ruan was in a dilemma.

He was shocked by the evil spirit and now his legs were like jelly. If he did not do anything, he wouldn’t be able to properly explain things to serious students like Zhang Tao. The rumour that Lang Jing Feng was an ignorant and incompetent rich second generation, who relied on his family relationships to transfer to the second high school had long been spread in class. Now that Bai Ruan was indifferent to Lang Jing Feng’s wrong behavior and engaged in double standards, would this make students feel as if he were being biased?

I think you are making things difficult for this little white rabbit! Bai Ruan was helpless and forced himself to slowly peer towards Lang Jing Feng’s direction. As soon as he moved, Lang Jing Feng who was looking at the sky in a daze met his eyes.

Bai Ruan froze instantly, mobilizing the courage of his life to prevent himself from running and tried to control his facial expression but to no avail. It was as if he fell into an abyss.

At this moment, Bai Ruan in Lang Jing Feng’s eyes looked like this; a pair of shiny round black eyes which opened tensely, with a slightly trembling sharp chin and a beautifully shaped pair of lips which moved as if wanting to say something but closed again before making a sound.

He seemed to be a novice teacher who was so scared by rowdy students that he wouldn’t even dare to say anything. A poor little one, who caught bad students and was always bullied.

Lang Jing Feng wanted to laugh a little. He stared at Bai Ruan’s face and glanced downwards.

… The tailored shirt and belt made Bai Ruan’s waist look very slender.

Bai Ruan was shocked by Lang Jing Feng’s gaze and his scalp kept tingling. He felt as though he was being stalked by predators. Before his courage was completely gone, Bai Ruan licked his lips nervously and mentally reminded himself of the body-protection spells in his head and said unnaturally, “Lang Jing Feng, it is now self-study period.”

Lang Jing Feng’s eyes lifted. His gaze returned from Bai Ruan’s waist to his face.

Bai Ruan was pondering hard on what to say to make Lang Jing Feng obediently lower his head to read. However, Lang Jing Feng slowly retracted his long legs that were stretched out in the aisle.

“… Okay, Teacher Bai,” Lang Jing Feng said. His voice was low and magnetic, laced with a little laziness as if he had just woken up. As he replied, he pulled out his hands that were in his pockets. With two fingers, he took out a Chinese book under the desk, threw it on the empty surface and started turning the pages indiscriminately.

Bai Ruan could hardly believe his eyes.

Lang Jing Feng raised the corner of his mouth and smiled at Bai Ruan, then leaned his forehead and looked down at the textbook.

That smile was not the kind a student should have, polite and respectful. On the contrary, the handsome and arrogant face clearly showed the kind of smile that said “looking at your pitiful state, I’ll comply”.

But no matter how much the other laughed, Bai Ruan could only feel relieved.

The author has something to say:

Lang Jing Feng: You must have been too petrified upon seeing this bad boy.

Bai Ruan Ruan6: … That’s not it.

1

Breaking up the individual words, Bai refers to white and Ruan refers to soft. Thus, very suitable to his rabbit demon appearance.

2

‘Xiao’ refers to small. So Xiao Bai Ruan refers to when Bai Ruan was younger.

3

It does not mean literally opening his eyes but the special ability of sight. Like opening the third eye to see ghosts.

4

Refers to Bai Ruan’s confidence and ambition to start to tackle the problem which disappeared like a fart because he chickened out.

5

Sedate, respectable, and unadventurous.

6

It’s a nickname for Bai Ruan. Also known as white and soft.
