Metaphysical Apocalypse

Chapter 1 - Earthquakes

Two minutes into Ms.Grey's class and the room starts violently shaking. "Earthquake!", someone yells.

In this small classroom filled with about 20 kids in a 10 by 10 meter room, there was great disorder. Desks were shaking, lights were blinking, and people were yelling.

In the bottom left corner of the room sat a boy, almost a man, 16 years of age. He had dark black hair, cut at a medium size, combed to the right. His face was nothing special, not ugly, but not exactly handsome either. The most interesting thing about his face at the moment was the lack of emotions. Compared to everyone else in the room, he looked rather calm. Though it might seem he was calm, he was actually panicking inside just as much as the rest of the students, maybe even more. The boy, whose names is Arbee, had a weird condition where he is incapable of showing emotions on his face. He feels emotions, but his face will always be blank. This has always caused him problems communicating with others when growing up. Nowadays he just doesn't really talk to anyone, and is often mistaken as a mute.

Arbee, remembering safety procedures, quickly dived under his desk to protect himself in case stuff fall. A few other students, seeing him, also realized that it would probably be a good idea to go under the desk. At that moment, Arbee saved their lives, at least for the time being, because just 10 seconds later the ceiling of the school caved in.

The school's name was Woodland Park HS. Arbee had been going there for the past 6 months or so. He had no real connection to the school. He actually had no real connection to anyplace. He is always moving from one foster home to another, which is also a reason why he barely socializes. There is no point since he is going to just move anyways.

All around Arbee there was dust. He could not see around him at all, but he could hear a lot of screaming. Not everyone was lucky enough to get under their desk in time. Anyone who wasn't under a desk was sure to have gotten crushed. The weight of the ceiling was not something a human body could take. Woodland Park's ceiling was made from 10 cm thick cement and is supported by steel beams. Even if you're under the desk you could get hurt if you're unlucky and one of the steel beams fell on top of it.

After around 15 minutes the shaking finally stopped. The screams died down too. That could be a good thing or a bad thing. Arbee was debating whether or not to try and come out. Good thing he decided not to, because one minute later the shaking started again. This time it was much less violent, but it was still pretty bad. "Aaaahhhh!", another scream was heard.

'Someone must have tried to come out from underneath a desk, and something fell on them' thought Arbee.

At this point in time, Arbee was scared out of his mind. He had no idea what was going on, outside of his little cubicle underneath his desk. The space he was in was only around half of a meter long, wide and high. It was extremely cramped, but he didn't stretch or move at all. He even slowed down his breathing to attempt to calm himself. Not that it worked.

This time the shaking continued for only 5 minutes. After the shaking stopped Arbee didn't dare go outside, in case the same thing that happened last time happens again. As expected after 2 minutes the shaking started again. This happened a couple more times. On the seventh time even after 15 minutes, the shaking didn't continue.

In total over a period of 60 minutes, two-thirds of the time was spent with the place shaking. Arbee timed this all using his watch, which was a neat digital watch he got from his previous foster parents for his birthday. It was one of the only items he owned besides his school items, clothes, and cell phone.

Arbee decided to wait for another 15 minutes before coming out from where he was. In the 15 minutes the world didn't shake again, so he figured it was safe.

There were large pieces of concrete all around him and was blocking his way out from under the desk. They were a bit heavy, but he was able to push them out of the way. After crawling out from under the desk, the first thing he noticed was that he could hardly see. It was like a big fog was covering everything. The ceiling had caved in, so there should be light coming from outside, but it seemed as if it was night time.

At this point in time, Arbee was pretty shaken. He was a person who didn't get surprised by much, and will always stay cool in any situation. But this was too much, even for him. Of course, his face was as blank as ever. Just imagine the emoji with a straight line for his face. That is his face right now and at any other time.

He has always been an intelligent person, and he realized that the chance of anyone else being alive in that classroom was pretty low. The only reason he is alive right now is that he was lucky and very cautious. Even the other people who went under the desks probably died because they had left too early, or had gotten hit by one of the steel poles.

He decided to check and see if there were any other people he could find, so he looked around under all the rubble. It was pretty hard to search because of how dark it was, but he did find 5 bodies after a few minutes. All crushed and dead. He even found his teacher, Ms.Grey. Arbee had no real personal connection with anyone in this class, but he had common human morals and does care for others. He's not a psychopath, and it's not like he had anything against the people in his class.

After looking around for another 10 minutes he found 8 more bodies, every one of them crushed. Most of them died by getting hit on the head. At least they died quick. One of them seemed to have both his arms smashed. Other than that his body was fine. He most likely had a cardiac arrest from the pain and shock.

In the inside, Arbee was pretty scared. He did not want to die. His life has not been the best, that's for sure, but he had never had even considered suicide.

Arbee decided that he wasn't going to be able to find any live people in the classroom, so he left, stepping over what was left of the crumbled wall, to, what would be the hallway. The hallway was also destroyed, with all the walls in shambles and the ceiling had completely caved in leaving pieces of concrete all over the floor.

He started to make his way to the exit of the school based on his memory. Arbee slowly navigated through the hallway, making sure to avoid anything that looks dangerous or unstable. Halfway on his way there, he started to hear something. It was a sort of rhythmic clanging. It was the sort of sound that gets made when you hit a piece of hollow metal and it vibrates.
