Midnight High

Chapter 1 - The Letter

The familiar click of the black letter slit opening and closing rang like a chime through the narrow, aged walls of the house. It was the post that had just been delivered along with the daily newspaper.

"Alex… can you get that for me?" an old raspy voice croaked out from the living room.

Soon after a rush of thuds as youth who sloppily dressed and still had his bed hair rushed down the stairs with surprising enthusiasm.

"Hang on then," the youth called back as he swiftly reached the bottom of the wooden and uneven steps.

The youth swiftly bent over and scooped up the newspaper along with a series of junk mail underneath him. However a crystal white letter adorned with an elegant gold lining and crimson red wax seal dragged his eyes towards it. Although it was a beautiful letter, one that could even be described as if an angel had sent it for some unknown reason the youth felt uneasy holding it. He headed to living after filing away all the obvious junk mail, with the newspaper and adorned letter in his left hand.

"Here you go grandpa," the youth politely spoke as he gave the newspaper to the elderly man in front of him who was holding some green tea.

"Ah… thank you Alex," the old man spoke as he rose his trembling hand to gently sip the steaming tea," age sure does do its toll on my body."

Alex softly smiled before presenting the letter to his grandfather," Grandpa Matteo, are we supposed to get a letter like this."

Upon seeing the letter his grandfather's eyes shot open wide, but only for a split second. Matteo reached out and swiped the letter off Alex with a sense of urgency before proceeding to open. The blood red sealed was snapped open as it was carefully unfolded. A period of silence encompassed the room as Alex was confused but he knew from previous experience that it was better to not disturb his grandfather when he was focusing so intensely. Eventually the wrinkled fingers of the old man neatly folded the letter up before Matteo passed it to Alex.

"Alex, read this carefully, this is your admission letter for your high school that I have enrolled you into," Matteo smiled reassuringly.

"Wait, a high school, old man, I am seriously amazed by your ability to find a school that would even considered taking me in," Alex cried out in disbelief as he clutched the letter as if it was savior," Midnight high…"
