“Don’t tell me you’re waiting here for dinner at our place?” Tang Ye squinted at Du Jiang, and Chen Lan could sense that although Tang Ye’s tone remained mostly unchanged, there was a subtle ease and casualness in his conversation with Du Jiang.

“Am I that kind of person?” Du Jiang took the things from Tang Ye’s hands. “Sister-in-law’s younger sister came for her, and since you weren’t home, she had nowhere to go, so she squatted at the gate. I brought her to my house but it’s not appropriate for me to be with a young girl under the same roof. So I waited at the gate for you.”

Upon hearing the words ‘younger sister’, Chen Lan was momentarily confused, but then she realized Du Jiang was referring to Wen Jing. “Brother Du, you mean Wen Jing, right? Thank you. I’ll go to your house to pick her up.”

Du Jiang waved his hand when he heard Chen Lan’s thanks. “What are you talking about? Given my relationship with Ol’ Tang here, there’s no need to thank me for such a small thing.”

The three of them first went to Du Jiang’s house to pick up Wen Jing before returning home together.

Once inside, after they had put away the things, Chen Lan asked Wen Jing, “Why did you come over today?”

“I make a sample each for the designs that you draw,” said Wen Jing. “I wanted to show them to you, but I didn’t expect you to be out.” She scratched her head, looking a bit shy and innocent.

Chen Lan couldn’t help but pinch her cheek. “Coincidentally, I’m going to treat your brother-in-law’s comrades to dinner today. Stay and eat with us. I’ll cook something delicious for you.”

Wen Jing was taken aback by Chen Lan’s affectionate gestures. Although in the past Chen Lan had been kind to her, she had never been this intimate before. Moreover, Lanlan had just said she would cook for her, but Lanlan couldn’t cook at all. No matter what, even if Lanlan’s cooking wasn’t delicious, she would eat it all.

“Ol’ Du, go to Ol’ Song’s house and call him over. I’ll start cooking now, and we’ll be ready to eat soon,” Tang Ye put down whatever he was holding and told Du Jiang, who had just followed him in.

“Ol’ Tang, that’s not right. I’m a guest when I come to your house. How can you let a guest run errands?” Du Jiang said, setting down what he was holding and sat in a nearby chair. It was clear he had no intention of following Tang Ye’s orders.

Tang Ye grabbed an apple and tossed it over. “Hurry up!”

Du Jiang caught the apple, wiped it on his shirt, took a bite, and then got up to leave, muttering to himself, “Ah, married and forgot about your brother.”

While Chen Lan was busy packing things, she watched their interaction with a smile. This version of Tang Ye had gained a bit more liveliness and charm, and his imposing aura had lessened somewhat.

Tang Ye turned and saw Chen Lan smiling gently at him. His face blushed red as he walked over. “Let me help you.”

Chen Lan avoided his outstretched hand. “No need, I can handle it. When Commissar Song and Instructor Du come back, you can chat with them.”

“No need, they don’t need any formalities,” Tang Ye insisted.

He was very familiar with these two men. One was his comrade who he had known since their days in the recruits’ platoon and had remained close ever since, and the other was a superior who had taken care of him since he joined the army. Before getting married, they used to visit Tang Ye’s place often, and they always made themselves at home.

On the other hand, Chen Lan was a pampered princess at home. She could cook once in a while but he couldn’t imagine her handling every meal on her own. If Grandpa Chen found out, he would probably scold Tang Ye for not taking good care of her.

However, she remained firm, “Be good, listen to me. Our kitchen at home is small, and having Xiaojing help me inside is enough. You can’t even fit inside, do you want Xiaojing, a young girl, to chat with them outside?”

Hearing this, Tang Ye finally realized that he had made poor judgment. Indeed, it wouldn’t be appropriate for a young girl like Wen Jing to accompany them outside, especially since they weren’t familiar with each other.

Tang Ye didn’t expect Chen Lan to be so considerate, and he couldn’t help but appreciate her more. He used to think of Chen Lan as just a pretty face without many other qualities, but since their marriage, she had consistently surprised him.

“I understand, no need to make it too sumptuous. They’re not picky eaters,” Tang Ye said as he helped bring the groceries into the kitchen. He still couldn’t shake off the feeling of worry, though.

Chen Lan nodded and then raised her face at him.

However, Tang Ye looked at her in confusion, not quite understanding what she meant. Chen Lan then pointed to her face and looked at his lips while giving him a seductive look.

Tang Ye blushed deeply and whispered, “But Wen Jing is still here.” He quickly escaped from the kitchen.
