Chapter 34: Returning to Her Parents’ Home

During lunch, Chen Jun insisted on having some drinks with Tang Ye.

Seeing his daughter marry a man whom he had raised, and the two of them looking so happy together, he was naturally delighted.

Tang Ye had been granted leave from the military, and since he was accompanying Chen Lan’s family for the meal, he drank as much as Chen Jun did.

But how could he, someone who didn’t usually drink much, compete with someone like Chen Jun, who drank regularly? Before long, he began to feel tipsy.

Seeing that Tang Ye’s gaze was becoming somewhat blurred, Wang Lian quickly tugged on Chen Jun’s sleeve. “That’s enough, he’s had quite a bit. Ahye isn’t used to drinking. You should take it easy.”

Chen Jun waved his hand dismissively. “A real man, what’s a few sips of alcohol? It doesn’t matter!”

He had been to the battlefield, and back then, when he was injured and with no anesthesia, he relied on alcohol to numb the pain. So, he couldn’t give up drinking in this lifetime.

“Dad! You told me that Ahye has internal injuries and isn’t in good health! And now you’re making him drink.” Chen Lan looked at Tang Ye, whose skin had turned red all over and couldn’t help but worry. She scolded her father with a hint of coquetry.

Chen Jun stared at Chen Lan for a while, then emptied the contents of his wine glass in one gulp and said to Wang Lian, who was sitting beside him, “Well, girls grow up so fast, don’t they?”

Wang Lian found it amusing and patted his shoulder. “You’re such a grown man, why are you feeling jealous of your son-in-law!” She then turned to Chen Lan and instructed, “Take Ahye to rest for a while. Stay overnight today, and tomorrow you can go back with your older brother.”

Chen Lan nodded, then cupped Tang Ye’s face. “Ahye, no more drinking. Let’s go to the room and rest for a while.”

At this moment, Tang Ye was like a child, and Chen Lan was his sole reliance. When he heard that Chen Lan was taking him to rest, he obediently nodded and stood up.

Chen Lan held his hand and led him to her room.

Although Tang Ye seemed somewhat intoxicated at this moment, his walking was steady, and his posture remained upright, showing no signs of being drunk.

In the room, Chen Lan gently laid Tang Ye on her bed, covered him with a blanket, and wanted him to get a good rest.

However, Tang Ye kept his eyes open, staring at Chen Lan without blinking. Despite his eyelids growing heavier, he refused to close his eyes and sleep.

Chen Lan sat at the edge of the bed and gently stroked his head. “Ahye, be a good boy and go to sleep. I’ll go to the kitchen and make some hangover soup for you, okay?”

Tang Ye heard her words but looked at Chen Lan with no immediate reaction as if his brain was still processing what she had said.

After a moment, he nodded slightly but said, “Don’t go.”

Chen Lan did not expect Tang Ye, in his drunken state, to be so vulnerable. So, she kept her voice as soft as possible and gently patted Tang Ye’s shoulder with her hand. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave. This is our home. How can I leave?”

Chen Lan coaxed Tang Ye patiently, and he slowly closed his eyes, his breathing gradually becoming steady and even.

“Lil’ sister, can I come in?” Chen Ran’s voice came from outside the door.

“Come in, Big Brother.”

The door opened and Chen Ran walked in with a bowl of hangover soup. He saw Chen Lan sitting by the bed, gently wiping the sweat on Tang Ye’s face with a handkerchief.

Tang Ye was tightly holding Chen Lan’s small hand.

Chen Ran hadn’t expected Chen Lan to be so dedicated to taking care of Tang Ye. He had once been just as opposed to this marriage as Chen Tao, but not because he thought Tang Ye wasn’t worthy of Chen Lan.

On the contrary, he believed that Chen Lan, who had engaged in reckless behavior, couldn’t measure up to Tang Ye, even if she was his younger sister.

Tang Ye had suffered enough, and Chen Ran believed he should find a good girl. He didn’t want Chen Lan to make things worse for Tang Ye by marrying him.

Now that he saw his sister finally becoming more mature, no longer fixated on Liang Chen, and even treating Tang Ye well, Chen Ran was pleased with the change.

He walked forward and placed the hangover soup on the bedside table. “Aunt Juan just made it. Let him drink it when he wakes up later. Otherwise, he’ll have a headache.”

Chen Lan nodded. “Thank you, Big Brother.”

“You don’t need to thank your sibling like that. I’ll leave now. You should rest for a while. Uncle will come by later.”

Chen Ran said before leaving the room. He carefully closed the door behind him.

Chen Lan saw Tang Ye frown unconsciously in his sleep. She reached out and smoothed his brow gently. Then, she leaned over, resting her head on Tang Ye’s shoulder, and closed her eyes.

Tang Ye seemed to sense something. In his dreams, as the little boy cried alone in the snowy wilderness, he suddenly found himself embraced in a warm hug, and the snowstorm gradually subsided.
