Chapter 47: Can’t you at least say well then first?

After the backup team from Mihara Police Station left, Ayano went into the room with the white sofa and saw Toru inside.

He was sitting on the white sofa with his elbow on the armrest and his chin resting in his hand. He stared fixedly at the storm shutter that was currently left half closed.

Looking at him sitting quietly with a sorrowful face, Ayano felt she could understand why Hisami was head over heels for him when they were young. But his current self is…

While she was entertaining her thoughts, Toru suddenly said, “Did Shimizu tell you about Matsuko?”

Ayano: “Yeah. You know about the two of them?”

Toru: “Shimizu used to walk her home after club activities. I only watched them from afar so I’m not that familiar about them. …I remembered that Shimizu was here during the investigation for Matsuko’s death but I didn’t know that everyone thought we committed suicide together.”

Ayano: “Uncle Toru.”

“What is it?” Toru turned and looked at her.

Ayano: “Why didn’t you notice Uncle Jiro when he went up the stairs?”

Toru: “Maybe I accidentally overlooked him.”

Ayano: “Up until recently, you have been walking back and forth down the narrow hallway. Is it possible for you to overlook someone?”

Toru: “… Maybe I saw something that made me curious and went somewhere else.”

Ayano thought for him to go somewhere else was something equivalent to a cataclysmic unusual phenomenon. She asked, “What was it that made you curious?”

“Hmm… I don’t remember,” Toru said while looking at the storm shutter dazedly.

Ayano watched his profile and asked, “Uncle Toru. Was it you who killed Hisami-san?”

Toru turned towards her and said the same as Takato. “Don’t you know how to start a conversation with a preface? Or were the previous questions the preface for this topic?”

Ayano: “It depends.”

“Can’t you at least say well then before questioning the suspect?” Toru complained. He looked at the storm shutter again while saying, “What makes you think so?”

“No reason…” Ayano answered ambiguously. But in her mind, she felt like the scattered puzzle were starting to piece together.

“I’m not an evil spirit and I don’t have the power to kill a living person.” Toru gave a chuckle.

Ayano: “Yeah, you are right. But you are a smart person actually. I think you are able to manipulate a living person if you want to.”

“You don’t have to use the word actually there,” Toru complained. “No, I didn’t mean to kill her,” he admitted frankly.

The situation and the people usually never went as expected and it made Ayano felt regretful. “So, Uncle Toru, did you kill Hisami-san?”

Shimizu heard Ayano’s voice coming from the room with the white sofa. He quickly hid himself. He gave an eye signal to Tanimoto, who was walking behind him, to not make any sound.

Damn it this girl! She is going to make a deduction again by herself, Shimizu cursed inwardly while giving a close observation of the situation.
