36. The Voice in a Dream

Translator: Vivian

In the middle of the night, with mud all over him, Chen Ming wanted to take a taxi, but no taxi stopped to carry him. Finally, he was forced to give a high price and in this way he found a taxi.

Chen Ming sat down, and leaned against the taxi door with his head tilted. He was so tired that it was hard to keep his eyes open. He stopped forcing himself to be awake and decided to take a nap.

Probably because he was too tired, he slept deeply. He had a disordered dream in which some light shadows shook in the dark, and someone whispered in his ear, but it seemed like a foreign language, and he couldn’t understand a word.

When he opened his eyes again, the taxi had already arrived, and he had no idea when Zhou Nan floated away to do the task.

Chen Ming paid the fare and got off the taxi in a daze, unresponsive.

As soon as he entered the hotel, he attracted the attention of the receptionist. She guessed that Chen Ming had gone to the local night market and wanted to greet him with a smile. But when she looked closely, she found that he was soaked and covered with mud, even with some blood on his clothes. Her smile became stiff.

“You… you… you…”

It was too hard to explain. Chen Ming racked his brains to find a reason for his appearance. Then he gave a wry smile and made an excuse, “I went to play in the mountain, without any umbrella. When I went down the mountain, I slipped on the mud.”

The receptionist was still worried, “There’s much blood. Does it matter? Do you need to bandage it up?”

Chen Ming waved his hand and moved to the elevator, “No, no, no.”

“You’d better not take it lightly. If you get infected, it will be very serious.” As she said, she started looking for the set of things used for bandaging.

“Really.. it’s really unnecessary… Thank you for your concern.” Chen Ming pressed the elevator button madly. As soon as the door opened, he quickly walked in and fled, leaving the receptionist speechless.

Alas, what a good young man! But unfortunately he was so indifferent.

After he entered the room and closed the door, Chen Ming was suddenly overwhelmed by exhaustion.  It seemed that he was stepping on the cotton and nearly fell down.

Chen Ming casually threw his bag to the corner and sat on the small armchair. He wanted to take a rest first. After that, he would go to wash up, change clothes, and lie down on the soft bed.

With a deep sigh, he felt so sleepy that he changed his mind and decided to sleep for a while. The soaked clothes made him quite uncomfortable. He thought he would soon wake up.

It was hard to know if it was because of the thrill of the night. He had the similar disordered dream again like in the taxi. He could neither sleep soundly nor wake up.

Gradually, Chen Ming recognized the words that had been echoing in his ears — male and female voices, young and old voices, with joy or sadness, all of which were calling his name. The voices were familiar, but he was unable to identify the speakers .

Zhou Nan finished the task and floated in from the window.

When seeing sleeping Chen Ming, he knew that the man was just worn out. He didn’t take it seriously, but when he got closer, he found Chen Ming was frowning, and the latter’s pale face was full of sweat.

Was it too hot?

Zhou Nan looked up at the control panel of the air conditioner which seemed to have been on since they left in the evening.

A nightmare?

“Chen Ming?” He tried to awaken Chen Ming softly.

“Zhou Nan!” Chen Ming suddenly got up like a carp. He opened his eyes wide and his breath was short.

Startled by his sudden reaction, Zhou Nan jumped far back.

Chen Ming captured one highly recognizable voice among those in the dream and responded. He didn’t expect that it was Zhou Nan calling him in the reality, and he had overreacted.

“Uh… had a strange dream…” He explained awkwardly as he touched his nose.

“Did you dream about me?” Zhou Nan was surprised and a little excited.

“Mmm, I heard you call me.” Chen Ming was still annoyed for having made a fool of himself. He didn’t want to talk about this topic anymore, so he asked, “Have you called the police?”

Zhou Nan confirmed with a sense of accomplishment, “Yes, I left a message for them. No problem.”

Chen Ming was not so optimistic, “I hope the police would not take it as a pranker…”

“Don’t be a doomsayer!” Zhou Nan thought that he would be taken seriously because the auxiliary police officer was much frightened by him. He intended to use this fact to refute, but Chen Ming didn’t have time to listen to the details.

“Fine, fine, forget it.” Chen Ming said in a perfunctory way, standing up while leaning against his chair. His aching and weak muscles made him look like a centenarian, “Hey, I’m so dirty… I’ll go and take a shower.”
