91. Trick

Zhou Nan was also shocked and subconsciously covered his chest with his hands, thinking about nothing but whether the same fluorescent thing was in his body.

Chen Ming immediately found out the real identity of the thing and said, “Spirit? Why did you take her spirit?” He got more careful and hid his hand behind his back, controlling the rune paper in the air and quietly attaching a piece of it to Hu Yuelan’s back.

Hu Yuelan glanced at Chen Ming and she did not answer or notice the rune paper on her. She just took Bai Yiyi’s spirit, turned around and left.

Bai Yiyi, who was kneeling on the ground, stopped crying. Her mouth was half-open, her face looked lifeless, and she was silent. She just stared in the direction Hu Yuelan left with an absent-minded look, as if everything in the world had nothing to do with her anymore.

Was this the consequence of losing one’s spirit?

Chen Ming compressed his lips together thoughtfully and frowned even more deeply. A moment later, he said, “I’ll follow up and see what happens. You stay here.” Before Zhou Nan could respond, Chen Ming took the compass and some other rune papers and left through the broken wooden door.

Coal Ball was still hiding under the bed, giving a whimper once in a while. Zhou Nan looked at the dull woman beside him and he had no patience to stay here – judging from Chen Ming’s behaviours, something was probably wrong. Maybe he should follow them and help.

“You have to watch this woman.” Zhou Nan said to Coal Ball, regardless of whether it understood or not, grabbed a thin coat and went after Chen Ming quickly.

Looking down the cold and empty street, he saw a figure in the distance – it must be Chen Ming. Zhou Nan started chasing and coincidently, a heavy truck running a red light stopped Chen Ming.

After Zhou Nan got close, Chen Ming finally found that he was followed. He turned back and asked in surprise, “Why did you follow me here? Didn’t I tell you to stay at the flower shop?”

“Leave me with your ex? Come on.” Zhou Nan handed the coat, “Here, it’s still a little cold at night.”

Chen Ming immediately opened his mouth and wanted to refuse, “I don’t…”

“Hurry up. You still have to chase Hu Yuelan after putting on it.” Zhou Nan forcefully put the coat into Chen Ming’s arms and then asked, “Do you have a clue about her purpose of taking the spirit? What are spirits used for?”

“No.” As he spoke,  Chen Ming didn’t stop walking, “Special spirits can be used for medicine, but she shouldn’t have mastered the skills, which are not necessary anyway.”

“That makes it a little strange…”

“Also, she didn’t want to discuss with me at all, and it seemed that she didn’t want to tell me about her purpose. It felt like she was doing something behind my back.”

They both followed the compass and pursued Hu Yuelan closely. In the end, they found themselves in the wild woods where they had encountered the Ghost Soldiers. Zhou Nan got nervous too, and he had a feeling that Hu Yuelan was probably here to meet someone.

“She is very close.” Chen Ming looked up from the compass and caught a glimpse of the figure flashing through the woods, “Right in front of us!”

He had a little sweat on his forehead, either from the long chase or worry. He couldn’t hold back and shouted at Hu Yuelan, “Wait a minute! Watch out for traps!”

Hu Yuelan did slow down after his shout, but she didn’t turn around.

After they bypassed a tree, their view was no longer blocked. Zhou Nan saw Hu Yuelan facing someone and having a conversation. Moving closer, he saw the face clearly. It was the muddleheaded customer before – Li Muquan.

Chen Ming seemed surprised too. He stood at the same place, carefully keeping the distance and secretly scolding himself for being so careless as to forget about hiding himself earlier.

Of course, Li Muquan had noticed them. He looked back at them calmly with his back straight, like a completely different person. He chuckled and asked Hu Yuelan, “Did you get the stuff?”

Hu Yuelan grabbed the spirit in her hand, and the light of it stood out in the dark woods. She didn’t hand it over immediately and just said, “I got it.”

Li Muquan reached out his hand and ordered dominantly, “Give it to me.”

“First, tell me who is the killer that slaughtered my family.” Hu Yuelan’s eyes were a little bloodshot, showing a mixture of anger and impatience.

“There are still a lot of Pained Spirits, but I am the only one knowing who is the killer.” Li Muquan smiled triumphantly, “Who should be compromising? It can never be clearer, right?”

The words “Pained Spirits” were on Chen Ming’s mind for a while and suddenly evoked his memories. He suddenly understood, and his expression changed greatly into a panic, which Zhou Nan had never seen before.

“Calm down! Don’t give it to him!”

Hu Yuelan glanced back at him coldly, and then passed Bai Yiyi’s spirit over without hesitation, “Tell me, who is the killer?”

Li Muquan grabbed the fluorescent light in his hand. An uncontrollable grim smile appeared on his face, and the wrinkles cast deep shadows in the light, making his face even uglier. Suddenly, from the depths of the woods, from the places where the light couldn’t reach, in all directions, there came the sound of ironware rubbing on each other, jingling, clattering and sending chills down the spine.

The same place, the same sound, the same Ghost Soldiers.

Hu Yuelan looked around. Although she could not immediately figure out the situation, the sound that had brought her endless fear deep in her memory still made her tremble subconsciously.

“Run!” Chen Ming had no time to care about Hu Yuelan. He just turned around and grabbed Zhou Nan’s hand, trying to take him away.

“You are here already, why don’t you stay for a while?”

Just as he spoke, a cold light flashed in front of them, and a pair of spears clashed. Looking up, they found two Ghost Soldiers stood there left and right, blocking their way.

They were more than three meters tall and covered with cold armours, hiding their faces under their bronze helmets in the strange darkness. The spots where eyes should be were filled with two fluttering blue flames.

Not only Zhou Nan, but Chen Ming was facing the Ghost Soldiers so closely for the first time. He knew the opponent was by no means ordinary, so he didn’t dare to move rashly and just stood in front of Zhou Nan.

Now that the Ghost Soldiers appeared, the foe could not be more obvious. Hu Yuelan couldn’t analyze the situation calmly like Chen Ming did. She was completely overwhelmed by anger, and the disparity between the enemy and herself was left behind.

“You used me?” She shouted angrily and rushed at Li Muquan.

Li Muquan smiled scornfully and didn’t move his feet. Suddenly, a Ghost Soldier flashed from his side, stabbing the spear in her direction.

Hu Yuelan, relying on her swift moves, gently landed her feet on the ground and jumped to dodge the spear without lowering the speed. When the tail tip was only an inch away from Li Muquan’s neck, she almost trembled in excitement as she could see her victory.

“Watch your back!”

In this situation, those closely involved couldn’t always see clearly. Chen Ming saw everything in the distance, but the reminder was already late.

In the blink of an eye, the situation reversed – a spear suddenly came from Hu Yuelan’s blind spot, stabbing her in her fragile back of the waist and raising her high, like an arrogant show-off.
