It was a day which started with birds chirping happily.

I, Amy Lamias, regained the memories of my past life and it happened quite naturally.

To be exact, I am not a person of this world. I was born in a different world and lost my memories of my life there.

How did this happen, you ask? I’m not being an idiot.

Currently, I am the second daughter of a loving family of renowned knights who had worked in the Imperial Palace for generations until I was 5 years old.

However, when I was 6 years old, my father got caught in a power dispute which killed my parents, forcing the only surviving members of our family — me and my older sister — to escape to a secluded forest.

Since then, we have been living peacefully.

So the fact that, at one point in time, I lived as a person other than Amy in ‘Korea’ for more than 20 years, did not have a big impact on me.

As if I was a small and significant star in the universe, I lacked an actual influence to become someone other than Amy, so I could continue living as Amy even with these memories.

Even though I can’t go back, I am still Amy.

Just that this world was in a book I read a long time ago.

Especially since I would be 16 this year, my sister told me that she had prepared something very special last night.

Although I was old enough not to get excited over a few words… I still only fell asleep at 3 in the middle of the night because I couldn’t contain my excitement.

“Surprise, Amy! Look at this!”

“Diana?”

My older sister, Diana, woke me up from my sleep. If it weren’t for her, I would have not woken up until the sun rose high in the sky.

My sister laughed happily until it seemed as though her eyes were going to fall off.**

I could not believe what I saw when I opened my eyes.

“Diana… what is ‘that’?”

“What do you mean ‘that’! It’s your friend. Didn’t you say you needed a friend?”

“That was so long ago! Wasn’t that something I said 10 years ago when I was 6? But more importantly, where did you get the kid?”

In front of me, there was a boy who looked to be about 8 years old.

Diana may look like someone with some missing screws, but she was a sensible older sister who was quick on her feet. She was not a person who would just pick up a child.

Looking at my sister who did something other than the expected, I calmed down unexpectedly.

My sister who has been wary of strangers, couldn’t have just picked up a boy because of his appearance or his black hair colour as if she had become another person.

This is a scene from the romance novel I read.

Oh my god.

I drew a cross in my head as I exclaimed, again, in my head. Dear God, the day I wished to never come has finally come.

That small boy is him. The male lead of the romance novel, the Grand Duke.

What kind of Grand Duke is a small boy? Well, there is a reason for this.

I am currently in the scene where the male lead had gotten into an accident staged by his older cousin, the Crown Prince, on his way to the Imperial Palace and lost his memories but is taken in by an older woman and was well taken care of.

The male lead, the Grand Duke, Reynok Ilberk.

This man’s life has honestly been such a mess. I felt sorry for the male lead being treated so unfairly by the writer that tears rolled out of my eyes.

This man has never received love in his entire life.

His mother, Duchess Ilberk, when she was pregnant with him, was kidnapped by the Hoonku tribe. Soon after, she was rescued by the Duke’s army, however…

“Is that child actually mine?”

The Duke became suspicious of the Duchess. The loving relationship that the couple once had, ended there and then.

The Duchess who went crazy with aphasia due to her wounded feelings was confined to the Northern tower. Later on, the Duke jumped from one woman to another, living life frivolously.

In this kind of situation, Reynok could only grow up alone without love.

Then, one day, when he was 8, he killed a bird that the Duke dearly cherished. He reasoned that he was trying to get a book but it was too noisy. He only tilted his head silently when the Duke pressed even harder for answers.

‘I killed it because it was annoying me. Why, should I not have killed it?’

He became a so-called sociopath. It was difficult for him to empathise with people’s emotions, so he could not understand the Duke’s reaction.

‘I can’t believe a thing like this could even exist!’

On that day onwards, the Duke began abusing Reynok.

He who didn’t know love, could not have learnt how to love and he who couldn’t learn how to love, could not know how to give it. Like that, Reynok grew up in such an abusive environment.

Finally, when he killed his father and became the Grand Duke, no one dared to ask whether it was the blood of the barbarians or the blood of the Ilberk family that ran in his veins anymore. Nonetheless, when he stood in front of his people, no one could deny that he looked exactly like his late father.

Since becoming the Grand Duke, he has earned numerous feats in the war against the barbarians, and his fame rose to the point that there was no one who had not heard of him.

Being so accomplished, he was then placed under close surveillance by his cousin, the Crown Prince Tanshiz, the other male lead of the novel. Reynok, who has been nicknamed ‘The Mad Grand Duke’ ignored the surveillance as he had no interest in the throne.

However, the magic that had manifested in the Ilberk family for generations was soon going to fall upon Reynok. The magic made everyday life impossible so it was more like a curse.

Upon hearing about the curse, the Crown Prince told Reynok.

“I’ll release the magic.”

The Crown Prince told him about a secret library of ancient books that have been passed down the Imperial family for generations. The ancient books could contain the solution and raise Reynok’s curse. The only condition was that Reynok should come to the Imperial Palace to retrieve the books himself.

With no complaints, Reynok headed for the Imperial Palace but then, …

The ‘accident’ occurred. The Crown Prince, who had no intentions of releasing the curse from the beginning, ordered for Raynok’s assassination on his way to the Imperial Palace.

“Capture the Duke! We must kill him on site!”

The raid, which started at daybreak, had dragged on unexpectedly long and only ended the next morning.

“Your Excellency, this way! We’ll take care of your back.”

During the day, Reynok was a helpless child but he barely managed to escape alive deep into the forest with the protection of his loyal knights.

“Oh my, what is a child doing here?”

Afterwards, he loses his memory due to a serious injury to his head and was picked up by a woman who lived in a remote part of the forest.

The woman was my older sister, Diana.

Unfortunately, my older sister is not the female lead. How I wish she was the female lead…

Sadly, my older sister died in the hands of the Crown Prince who was chasing after Reynok which caused him to regain his memories. To summarise it nicely, I guess my older sister was his unforgettable ‘first love’?

Having lost Diana and regaining his memories, Reynok swore to take revenge and marched towards the capital where he met the genius wizard and fell in love.

The genius magician who lifted Reynok’s curse was the female lead of the novel, Serena.

On the other hand, my role was to appear in the future and scream at Reynok, “You’re the one who killed my sister!”. That’s right. In the end, me and my older sister were just tools the writer used to motivate the male lead so that he could kill the Crown Prince and my older sister died just because she picked up the male lead.2

I looked at the male lead uncertainly. I knew this would happen, but it seemed like I lacked the determination to prevent it.

“Diana, bring him back to where you found him.”3

“How could you say such things about the child in front of him?”

My older sister, continued smiling, thinking that I was only joking. She even playfully smacked my shoulders.

“He may still look young, but he’s listening to whatever you’re saying. So, don’t say such things.”

The problem is in the first place, he’s not actually a child!

“Amy, say hello. From today onwards, he will be living with us. Sadly, it looks like he doesn’t have any memories.

“Yeah…”

Of course, he doesn’t. His head was beaten up, of course, he lost some of his memories.

“What should we name him?”

My mouth gaped like a goldfish before I quickly closed it.

No, I can’t. This is not something I can resolve just by getting angry at my sister. I have already tried so hard to make us leave this place before my sister could pick up the male lead but it was to no avail. When I was younger, I would try to coax her, whine and I even got angry with her! I made up my mind when I saw my sister standing her ground even if she died.

Yes, let’s be nice to the male lead. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could treat him well and escape before Crown Prince finds us? What do you think, male lead?

I looked at the boy with a complicated look before sighing and saying, “Then, …”

The words that I was going to say may hugely affect the flow of the story. Even though I hesitated and spoke slowly, I didn’t take too long to think. I was going to save my sister and take over her role on her behalf. I made up my mind.

“What about Knox?”5

“…”

“Because you picked him up at night.”

The boy raised his head for the first time. Without noticing it, I stopped breathing. His black hair was so glossy and his eyes sparkled like jewels. Even though I’ve read about his appearance many times in the novel but now that I’m seeing him in real life, the writing was not enough to describe his appearance. No, this was a type of sensation that felt like it would be embedded in my heart. He was ridiculously, breathtakingly beautiful. Moreover, he had such innocent eyes.

“Knox! What a great name! You, what do you think? Do you like it?”

He nodded slowly.

The boy who barely moved since he got here, nodded his head. I started getting cold sweat. I realised the boy was looking at me, his vision glued to me.

Anyways, taking over my sister’s role seemed to be the right choice, but now what?

At that moment, without even realising it, I gave a huge sigh.

The words can’t be taken back anymore. There’s no going back.

The magic that was placed on Raynok forced him to become a child for 15 days every month.

When I was 10 years old, I gave myself a name because no one gave me one before that.

In the novel, the male lead’s ‘first love’ was a very strong rival for the female lead to overcome. It was because my sister gave Raynok a name, which no one has ever done before. If my sister hadn’t died, the female lead would not have even stood a chance against her. If I was the female lead and had Raynok as my lover, I would not have been so confident in his love for me but it was different since I looked at him from the perspective of a reader.

‘The moment that person gave me a name, the world went silent and all I could see was that person… But that was a long time ago, Serena.’

So, the name held a special meaning for Raynok. Realising the mistake I inadvertently made, I felt as if my whole plan was going to fail. I didn’t realise it because I just named him on the spot, but the name Knox was never in the novel.2

Without a sound, the sun rose above the horizon, revealing its head and painted the sky red as its soft rays enveloped the boy as he stood by the window. The boy was receiving all the light entering the room. It looks like he reached midday ahead of me.

Now what?

“Sit down first. We are going to have breakfast.”

When I looked up, I saw the food that my sister who usually couldn’t wake up before the sun fully rose in the sky, preparing the food. Whenever my birthday comes, my sister always cooks for me. This birthday was no different.

My sister and I had quite a large age difference. Since I was born long after she was, it was a very special day for her and it never changed even after our parent died. While raising me, my sister never once forgot my birthday. Especially since this was my 16th birthday, my sister said she prepared something very special last night. But that gift was the male lead…

“Hey, move. I said move.”

As she shook me, I woke up reluctantly but I was busy looking at the boy. My sister was bothering Raynok, I mean Knox, about what he wanted to eat.

“Kid, what do you like to eat? Don’t children hate to eat salads? Since you don’t like to eat the usual greens, meat! What about meat?”

“…”

“Hm, so you don’t want meat. That’s a big problem.”

“Diana, stop it. Let’s start eating.”

“Oh, should I? Wait here for a bit, I’m going to set up the table for the adults.”

Somehow, I was now having breakfast with the male lead. I can’t believe this. I screamed in the inside with my chin propped up and my lips pouted. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous I realise this is. My older sister was someone who got easily distracted by baby animals, now look at her caring for Knox after seeing his appearance. She looks as comfortable as a fish in water. I understand her excitement but seeing her doting him only makes me feel depressed.

Diana, don’t you know it’s because of him you’re going to die?

Another sigh left my lips.

“I thought I told you to move?”

I realised a long time ago that my sister doesn’t really listen to me. Look. My sister who picked up the male lead in the novel really did pick him in the end. Soon, she’s going to die because of him within a year. Now, I’ll have to carefully consider the steps to take myself.

I looked at the food in front of me with an uncomfortable look on my face.

“Until when is he going to look at me like that?”

Actually, I’m only staring at my food because I wanted to avoid his gaze.

Why did I give him a name?

Even though this is a death flag, this is really tough for me. The flag that was supposed to belong to my sister has now definitely been passed down to me. So now, I have to play my sister’s role? As the male lead’s first love?

Despite only knowing parts and pieces of the novel, I am firmly continuing with the plan — leave the male lead be and run away before the Crown Prince arrives.

As if he wanted to drill holes into me with his gaze, I avoided his eyes and hummed to myself.

I don’t see anything, I don’t see anything at all…

Oh my god. I just made eye contact with Knox.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“…”+

I am clearly looking at Knox this time, but his lips are sealed.
