“Monsters are stronger at night, Amy.”

Only at that moment, when I was staring down at the monsters in dismay, was I reminded of my sister’s words. Does becoming stronger mean that they had developed a resistance for the powder?

We were slowly becoming surrounded. But the gllyluses remained wary and didn’t approach us. It was probably because of the powder I threw at them just now.

“Knox, what do we do?”

“Is there any way we can knock them out easily?”

I looked at the gllyluses and asked hesitatingly.

“Gllyluses… They may look intimidating but they are not very strong monsters. Can you see it? There should be a red gemstone on its forehead. Can you aim at it whenever you swing your sword?”

“Well, I’ll have to try.”

It was at that moment. One of the gllylus flew at us threateningly but was cut down with the swing of Knox’s sword and fell to the ground. Although I couldn’t dare to look at the monster’s dead body lying on the ground, I was horrified enough just looking at the red gemstone that had been cleanly cut.

… Does he really not remember anything?

Even though he managed to cut one down, his expression didn’t look good.

“I don’t think that was enough.”

“Huh? Aren’t you fighting well?”

“That’s not the problem. Our noise is attracting more here.”

Right after he spoke, grotesque sounds that resembled screams reverberated throughout the forest. Cries of gllyluses echoed from all around us—in front us, our sides and even behind us. When I realised what was happening… shivers ran down my spine.

“It sounds like they aren’t that close yet. Which way do we go?”

“D-d you see that white cloth? It’s that way. I think we’ll make it if we run for another 5 minutes.”

“Then, hold on tight.”

“Huh?”

Once he held me, he bolted. It was definitely much faster than us running one after the other. Fortunately, there weren’t any gllyluses in the direction we were heading towards.

Instead, dozens of gllyluses were chasing us down.

Even I could tell even though I was being carried by someone.

“Knox, Knox, turn right here.”

“Got it.”

Knox, who didn’t seem like he was breathing, ran like a wolf. To prevent myself from falling, I clung onto the hems of his clothes. In front of me, amidst the thicket of the forest, I could see the abandoned house which looked a lot like the house my sister and I were living in.

But since we didn’t know where the ‘safety zone’ began, it was too dangerous to stop running. Looking around, I noticed a thorn tree amongst the trees before looking at Knox.

“Knox, can you circle around the tree at your 11 o’clock direction and make a U-turn?”

“What?”

“It’s okay. It’s not dangerous. It’ll only take a while.”

Knox dashed quickly towards the tree and circled it, like a racing car drifting on a sharp curve. I, on the other hand, quickly hung my bag over one of the thorns and pulled, causing my stuffed bag to explode.

Pung!

After circling the tree once, the gllyluses were right behind us.

Before their sharp claws could reach us, their bodies dropped on the ground. And their bodies remained on the ground.

After narrowly escaping from the gllyluses, we ran towards the abandoned house. It looked like the ‘safety zone’ began from the fence.

Kyeek. Kyeeeeek!

The gllyluses cried their blood-curling screams as they couldn’t enter the fence. Treating their screams as background noises, I took deep breaths.

“Haa. Haa.”

… Knox was the one that carried me and ran but why was my heart beating so fast?

“Oh my gosh, that was surprising. Are you okay, Knox?”

“… As you can see, I’m fine.”

I raised my head but stopped when I saw his face in front of me. But there was no way I could avoid him any longer. Because I was still being carried by him. For some reason, he did not let me go.

Instead of putting me down, his arms dug into my waist harshly.

Since my head remained down, I couldn’t see what face he was making,

“…Sorry. Because of me, we were in danger.”

“Why are you apologising?”

“Huh?”

“You already warned me that it would be dangerous. Isn’t this expected then?”

It looked like he couldn’t tell the reason why I was apologising.

This man couldn’t understand the feelings of others well. He was a man who moved based on logic and reasoning, not feelings. But somehow, his usually cold voice sounded different.

“Why would you help someone who you know nothing about?”

“That’s because…”

“The fact that you pity me or feel sorry for me is not enough to explain why you would put your life in danger.”

His hand lifted my chin. I, instead of looking away again, met his eyes. Under the moonlight, his eyes sparkled as if they had been sprinkled with jewel dust.

“From the moment I opened my eyes, all you have done is helped me. I don’t understand why.”

I was captivated as I remain completely enamoured by his eyes. His firm arms carried me. There was no where to escape to as my legs remain captured in his tight hold.

In front of those persistent eyes, I shrugged my shoulders. His hands held my chin gently.

He asked me in a low voice.

“Were you sent by my country to help me?”

“What?”

Having no idea what he was talking about, I could only blink my eyes at him. Then, he changed his question.

“I asked if I was special.”

His indifferent yet persistent gaze seemed to overlap with the young Knox’s gaze when he asked me to stay by his side.

Special…

I sealed my lips. He continued staring into my eyes, as if the answer he was looking for was in them. I was so surprised by his question, I forgot to be afraid when I looked into his cold gaze.

Of course, Knox was special. He was the world’s male lead. The world practically revolved around him. Just from the Grand Duke’s disappearance, his dukedom was in chaos and the Crown Prince was holding a celebration because Knox was gone.

That’s not all. He was the commander of the front line in the North, leading numerous troops into battle.

Whether Knox was liked or not, there were many people who were affected by his absence. So how could he not be special if he was so influential and powerful?

“Of course… you’re special.”

“…”

“How could I not be bothered by a child who had been left to wander the forest alone?”

After I spoke anxiously, I shut my eyes, avoiding his gaze. The expression I saw just before I closed my eyes seemed to look a bit cold.

“Of course, I was surprised when you suddenly got bigger at night…”

It’s not like I could say that he was the male lead and because of him my sister died.

If one day, someone told me ‘This is a world written in a novel and you are the main character’, I don’t think I would have the confidence to not treat him like a madman.

So, if I had said it, wouldn’t I be treated like a madman too? Especially since Knox is very realistic, I don’t think he would believe me.

My head that I kept lowering was suddenly raised by Knox’s hand. Knox, who was still carrying me, made eye-contact.

“… You were surprised when I got bigger.”

“Yes.”

“Is that the only reason?”

Knox’s eyes which were like amethysts in a cave was clearly visible even in the dark. I tilted my head and stared at him.

“Then what other reason could I have?”

He wouldn’t let me go anytime soon so I gave up hoping.

As I looked at him gently, his expression changed slightly. He narrowed his eyes and pursed his lips…1

“Forget it.”

I didn’t know why he was frowning so deeply.

He looked as if he was trying to untangle thread that had knotted together but that expression was soon replaced by a blank one. He then put me down.

“Well, since we’ve arrived, we’ll look for that book you mentioned.”

“Ah… yes of course!”

As he strode ahead of me, I quickly chased him to catch up. However, the distance between us barely narrowed. Before long, we reached the door to the abandoned house.

Uhm, we had such a big stride difference. Suddenly, I wondered if this was how young Knox felt as he was chasing me.

The abandoned house looked no different from ours. I mean, since there should be a limit to the size of the ‘safety zone’, a house couldn’t be built too big. But it was slightly better than our single storey house.

‘Was this the garden my sister mentioned?’

Wild herbs were growing everywhere. If we had came during the day, we would’ve have collected them like crazy. But it would’ve been difficult to bring all of them back because we didn’t even have a place to store them. Looking at it now, I realised that we were lacking many things.

Creak.

When I opened the door, a wave of dust bloomed across the floor.

My sister would sometimes talk about how a wizard could cast magic onto his house to make it bigger or distort its space but it didn’t seem like any magic was casted here.

“There’s a lot of dust here.”

“It looks as if no one has been living here for a while.”

“Yes. I think it’s been at least 8 years since this house has been occupied? Ever since my sister found this place, it has always been empty.”

We entered the living room and all the furniture was covered in fine dust.

I though a wizard’s house would have magic placed on it so that it would be magically clean. It seems like this house had been really abandoned since there was no such magic.

The first floor only contained the kitchen and the living room. When we went up to the second floor, we found a study, a bedroom as well as a room that looked like a storage room. The doors were all wide open.

“Shall we look a bit closer first?”

“Sure.”

First, we went into the bedroom. But we found nothing but a bed and a small table. There was a hole in the curtains. I didn’t know if the curtains had been intentionally pierced or an accident occurred and the owner left it because it was too troublesome to fix it.

Let alone books, all we found was dust. So, we headed into the next room.

Next, we went into the storage room. There were various household items piled up but there weren’t any books. Amidst the things, there were also items like beakers that could be used in laboratories.

“Knox, do you know what this says? I can’t read it.”

“It looks more like formulas than words.”

I don’t think such complicated formulas would be written on such a simple bowl, right? I think, based on my imagination, it’s supposed to be some sort of magic tool.

Even if I could read the formula, it’s not like I could write it. Since I didn’t know anything about magic, I left the bowl as it is and closed the door.

“Finally, we have the study. There’s no way it wouldn’t be in here.”

Unlike the calm Knox, I opened the ajar door cautiously.

Cough, cough.

“We should start by opening the windows.”

“Ah, yes. Cough.

The study was filled with an unparalleled amount of dust. The room was also much smaller than the other rooms. If I stayed here any longer, I was going to die of sneezing. I’ll have to look around quickly.

T/N: Uhm I don’t know why the author wrote about sneezing here when the previous sounds were all coughing sounds lol

I hurriedly blocked my nose with my sleeve and searched the room.

“Unexpectedly, here’s not that many books here.”

I said as I saw bookshelves that were mostly empty.

I read the titles of the books here and there. There were some novels and books on history. I didn’t think it would be hard to look for the book here.

With the help of Knox, after taking out all the books and sorting them out, as expected, there were only three books on magic.

“… I had expected only a little but I didn’t know that we would only find three books.”

“Maybe the wizard that stayed here took most of them along with him.”

“Ah, that’s possible.”

Nodding my head, I looked over to the three books. Even if we found many books, I would’ve still brooded over which to pick. That was because we could only bring back a limited number of books home. Furthermore, considering the thickness of each book, it looks like we can only take one?

“Which one should we bring back? All the titles seem pretty legitimate.”

“… What? You can read the titles?”

“… Huh? Oh yeah. I can read it.”

I blinked curiously at the book Knox was holding. I had no choice but to tilt my head in order for to me to alternate between looking at his face and the book. He frowned.

“That reads ‘An Order’s origin’…? Why are you doing that?”

“I couldn’t read it.”

“What?”

My eyes widened as I looked at the book again.

He couldn’t read this?

Thinking about it a little deeper, I realised why.

“Amy learns very fast.”

My sister taught me how to speak and write.

I took basic continental language classes as well as foreign language classes. I never told my sister but I could read and understand words before she even explained them to me. This had been happening since…

The day I realised that this world was of a novel.

“Oh my gosh! You can read books and you know Luchev? Our Amy is so smart!”

I could read not only my sister’s teachings but I could also read unfamiliar languages that I had never seen before without interruption. I could read difficult foreign words before my sister read them to me.

“These look like letters from an ancient language. How can you read them?”

“A-ah, these letters? I’ll teach them to you during the day then.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Huh? Don’t you know? I thought I already told you before… I’m teaching the Knox in the day how to read and write.”

“Ancient languages?”

His head tilted slightly. I winced at the fact that I said something unnecessary.

“Uh, I thought you only taught him the continental language?”

… I can’t believe I read it with all my heart.

How could I have known that it was not a language used very frequently, when I could read it so fluently. Whatever I said, my sister would just exclaim ‘Wow! My Amy is so smart!’…

Anyway, I don’t know how but I can read this book that had been written with unfamiliar words which Knox found difficult to read.

Knox looked at me with an unreadable expression for a moment before nodding.

“Looks like we’ll take this one.”

Knox who listened to me read the rest of the books’ titles, chose the first book.

The two books were quite thick so I had to hug them to carry them.

“Bring something so I can wrap this book.”

Knox left for a while, saying he saw a piece of cloth in one of the rooms a while ago. In the meantime, I looked down at the book. The book was thick but when I saw that the back of the book had been bent a little, I opened the book.

Tud.

“What’s this? A necklace?”

I picked up the item that had fell on the ground. The book must have been bulging because the necklace had been stuck in the middle, acting as some kind of bookmark.

“So it’s called ‘Matari’?”

The charm that was hanging from the necklace was a flat sheet of metal that had a strange shape. It looked like an inverted bat. As I looked at it for a while, it glistened under the light.

Huuing.

At that moment, a blinding light pierced my eyes. Surprised, I dropped the necklace but it was only after the now faded light wrapped itself around my hand.

“… W-what’s this?”

Just like that, the light faded away.

I was puzzled at its sudden disappearance. What was that light just now?

If it had came from the book, I could assume that it had something to do with the book. I tucked the necklace into my pocket slowly. At the same time, Knox came back.

“Did something happen?”

“No… Nothing happened.”

I thought the light had been pretty flashy, how had Knox not seen it? Looking into my eyes gently, Knox took the book from my hands.

“Really? I could hear everything.”

“…”

Instead of waiting for an answer, he turned his head and looked at the sky.

“It’s going to be day soon. We should hurry back.”

“Ah… I-I see. How long did we spend in here?”

I could see the open sky outside the window. Certainly, it was going to be dawn soon. We decided that we would come back for the remaining books and came back down to the first floor.

Kieek.

We were speechless.

“…”

“… What now?”

The gllyluses were gathered around the fence. I couldn’t believe it.

Kyeeeek.

Hearing the goosebump-inducing screeches, I grabbed onto Knox’s clothes.

“…Uhm, do you know if you have any ability that could attract monsters?”
