Though they may look similar, the Knox at night and the Knox in the day felt very different. Despite this, their wounds were the same.

No. How could a person not be hurt after going through all that?

I could feel his glare . He seemed to be not very pleased, but I pretended I didn’t notice. I was still afraid of all his complaints. After avoiding his eyes for a long time, I turned around and opened my mouth.

“The book on magic I was talking about yesterday, I figured out a way to find it.”

His eyes turned to face mine.

“Well, I don’t know if the book will mention anything about your condition, but…”

Before I could say anything to that gaze, I stood up.

“Before I start explaining, I need to show you something. Come here.”

“…Are you going out of the room?”

His expression that didn’t change very often contorted to a frown.

Because of my sister, he was locked up in this room almost all the time. It was strange but he managed to stay put.

“My sister left for a while. She won’t be back for another 3 days.”

“Outside…”

“Yes, you’ve been frustrated in here, haven’t you? You never said anything but I assume so. You haven’t even looked around here before, so let’s start with looking around first.”

“Look around?”

“Because it’s not like you can leave the room otherwise?”

There were many monsters that prefer to be active at night instead of the day. So, despite being familiar with the forest, my older sister tried her best to not go out at night.

“Here we are.”

I led Knox to every nook and cranny of the house, leaving out my sister’s room. In fact, the house was so small I actually only needed to show him the living room and the kitchen. We stopped by the storage room before I finally brought him to the garden.

“This is the garden which we use as a field. We grow simple vegetables here to eat.

“Your sister must be strong enough to travel through the forest to someplace that is 2 days far.”

“Yes, you’re right. What was it again? If I’m not wrong, she used to be a knight or something.”

I forgot her official title. I haven’t heard it since I was a child, but my sister said that it was a pretty good title. Though, when most of our family perished, her future as a knight disappeared as well.

It was something that I could only feel sorry for, so, I didn’t look very happy.

“My sister is also very good at dealing with monsters. Other than dealing with monsters, she can’t really do anything by herself. Oh, wait a minute please, I need to get something. Here it is!”

Running quickly, I pulled the things I had planned to use from the storage room. My sister kept everything she didn’t use in the storage room and a long sword was one of them.

“My sister picked it up from the woods but she said that it was too long for her. I was wondering if it might fit Knox?”

“…It’s definitely a long sword but I don’t remember if I ever learned how to wield one.”

“Uhm, why don’t you swing it around first? Maybe your body will remember?”

That might have been what I said but I wasn’t really sure.

However, I soon changed my mind as I saw Knox swinging the sword.

12

“…You said you never learned to wield one.”

“I thought I didn’t know.”

Although he only handled the sword with one technique, even to me who knew nothing about swords, noticed that he looked refined and stable. Even the man who was handling the sword himself was surprised, it seemed as if he was not expecting this.

…I should’ve been more careful of my actions around him. With determination, I crouched down in front of the sword.

“Could you hear the blade of the sword?”

“Roughly.”

“It’s been in the storage for a long time, so I don’t know if it has rusted. Well, why don’t you use your hair to find out?”

I tapped the sword with my finger. His eyes traveled to the top of my head, I pretended not to notice. My sister said tha the things in the storage were useful so I wondered if it were okay to just use it. After tapping on the blade a few more times, I hastily plucked a hair.

Did I play around too much?

“Uh…”

As I tried to place my hair on the blade, I accidentally grazed my palm against it. I began to bleed.

“…It hurts.”1

“…It’s because you were messing around.”

He stared at me indifferently. He looked at the wound on my hand as expressionless as he would at his own hand.

“…Is that something you should say to an injured person?”

“Isn’t that just a small wound?”

My eyes filled with sorrow. I didn’t care whether the wound hurt or not anymore.

“No, look at this. This small wound is painful enough to make me feel like dying. But after being scratched by glass shards, how can you not be in pain?”

“I’ll try to understand that. But why are you talking to me while looking at me like that?”

“I want you to say something if your hand hurts. If a person is in pain, he should say that he is in pain.”

“…Then, what do you expect me to do? I’m only saying that it didn’t hurt because it really didn’t.”

“How stubborn…”

“What?”

“Uh, it hurts!”

He shouted, ” !” before turning around to face me.

With my nose sniffing, I clasped my right hand with my left sleeve. It didn’t cut very deep so why was I bleeding so much?

“Ah…”

“What’s wrong?”

“What do I do? The bleeding is not stopping.”

“…”

Knox frowned as he squatted down and grabbed my wrist. I flinched when he grabbed my wrist, but I wondered what he was going to do so I just watched him work.

After looking at my palm, he raised my hand to his mouth.

Huh?

“W-wait… What on earth are you doing!?”1

“… Quiet down. My ears hurt.”

“N-no, I mean…”

When something soft andmoist touched my palm, it took me less than 5 seconds to realise that it was actually Knox’s tongue. Surprised, I tried to pull my hand away but Knox was too strong.1

“Stay still.”

“A-Ah…”

“Your hand is bleeding a lot.”

…No, I mean, is saliva considered a type of remedy here too? I didn’t take my eyes away from my hand. No, it was more like I couldn’t.

“U-uh.”

As I tried not to look away and ignore the sight and the feeling on his lips on my palm. I made eye-contact with Knox. His gaze that was as wild as a beast but beautiful as well drew me in.

“I-It’s working right? Then that’s enough.”

I pulled back my hand quickly.

I didn’t know whether it was thanks to Knox or not but I stopped bleeding.

It was too late. I already got my blood everywhere, what should I do…

I realised I was staring at Knox when I noticed him licking his lips. I quickly turned my head away. Good thing it was dark or he would have caught me blushing hard.1

“So, t-the book. We were talking about how we should go get the book.”

“I’m listening.”

“The book is at a place not far from here. It’s at another ‘safe zone’. At that place, there is an abandoned house where a wizard used to reside in. The book might be there.”

“I see.”

I turned my head stealthily to look at him and said.

“Are you going to go?”

“Didn’t you just tell me I should go?”

In a daze, I just nodded my head.

“But it’s very dangerous? If you go at night, it would be dark and there would be a lot of monsters. So, I think it would be better if you go in the morning…”

“I can’t go in the morning.”

“Then maybe I should go? You never know, the day might be safer…”

“Why would you go so far for me?”

What he asked with a low voice made my eyes wide, startling me.

“Huh? I’m just doing it because it’s frustrating.”

“…”

This was a forest streaming with monsters. Though more monsters roam around at night, it doesn’t mean that there weren’t any monsters during the day. Suddenly, I recalled my sister’s words, asking me to be safe.

“You don’t even know why you turn into a child. You don’t have your memories. You’re currently in a situation where you don’t even know who you are or what your name is. If it were me, I would have been frustrated…”

“If that’s the case, I have no choice but to go at night.”

While speaking to me calmly, for some reason, he started looking down at me.

Was I seeing things? Did his eyes that always remain emotionless begin to stir? Anyways, if he wanted to go, I had no way of stopping him.

“Are you going to come back?”

“I have to come back. There’s no other place I could stay at.”

After saying this, there was something I couldn’t recognise in Knox’s eyes. Under the moonlight, his eyes shone brighter, making it hard for me to look at him.

When I avoided his eyes, I shook my head. Anxious, I realised I couldn’t let him go alone. In the end, I took a deep breath and grabbed his clothes.2

“It’s really dangerous.”

Even if it was a ‘safe zone’ that my sister dare not go, it shouldn’t be a problem for Knox who was way stronger than her. However, I was worried about the fact that he did not have his memories.

No matter how much his body remembers, he couldn’t possibly remember all his skills. Would it be better to convince my sister and ask her to come along instead?

I groaned in dismay because I knew that could never happen. Knox removed my hand that was grabbing his clothes, then he took my hands with his and called me.

“Amy.”

The name I had been hearing for the past 16 years felt strange when he called it. Under the moonlight, his eyes that shone like a beast’s drew me in again. Blinking confusedly, I looked at him and his expressionless face and lips faced me.

“Will you come with me?”

“Into the forest?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t think I would be of any help at all though…?”

Was this guy serious? He wanted to take me into the forest? Instead of being any help, I would just be a heap of baggage.

No, wait. Let’s think about this for a second.

I soon realised I wasn’t just a heap of baggage.

“Amy, do you see this drawing? Let’s study these drawings, shall we? These are all the monsters you need to look out for in the forest.”

I was an ordinary person who couldn’t even wield a sword like my sister. To compare me to my sister was already too much since she was already a pretty well-known knight by the age of 18. Even while trying to survive the forest, she enjoyed traveling through it.

Again, to compare her with Knox was also too much. He was only 17 and he had already led a huge war.

I have learned many things from my sister who was an expert in monsters. I lived and studied in this forest alongside my sister. Besides monsters, there were many other things to look out for.

On the other hand, this was Knox’s first time in this forest. So, he would never have known this.

‘There are many poisonous plants, monsters, and unusual wild animals to watch out for.’

The Night forest where my sister and I built a place for ourselves had many unique animals, plants, and characteristics. To survive in it, knowing how to wield the sword easily was not enough.

Even if Knox was the male lead, he would still get hurt. He wasn’t immortal.

“I take back what I just said. Come to think of it, Knox, you don’t know anything about this forest.”

“Doesn’t that apply to you too? You seem to only live your life in the house, no?”

“At least I know more than you on how to survive in this forest. Also, I have traveled into the forest with my sister before, okay?”

Seeing Knox’s pout in the corner of my eyes, I quickly averted them.3

“Anyways, you were the one who asked me to come with you.”

I was scared but I couldn’t stop myself from talking.

“If you were asking for a favor, shouldn’t you ask nicely?”

Obviously, me and my sister were his benefactors. We saved his life, dressed him, fed him with care, and let him stay in our house.

Of course, my sister didn’t know that he turned into a man at night. She didn’t consider him dangerous when he first came because he lost his memories, but if she knew, she would obviously think he posed a threat.

Swiftly, I raised my head.

“Is that so?”

After I said my piece, Knox stared at me, tilting his head slightly. His eyes seemed to say that he understood what I said, but at the same time seemed to say that he couldn’t understand anything at all.

“Yes. When you’re asking for a favour, you should show your sincerity.”

“How should I do that?”

“Say ‘please’ politely.”

I didn’t know if I was too hard on him but I couldn’t remain scared of him forever.

By the way, what happens when his memory returns? What if he remembers everything I’ve done and holds a grudge against me?

I felt a chill run down my spine.

“No, wait, wait. Just forget what I said. I was joking.”

But Knox started staring at me with an expression I did not recognise!

Heok. He wasn’t mad, was he?

I flinched. Sneakily, I tried to move my feet and walk away from him. As I tried to move away, my eyes widened.

“Knox?”

His huge body turned around slowly. His torso leaned towards me, making me see his face more closely.

“Will you come with me, my lady?”3

Under the pale moonlight, his breathtakingly beautiful face looked dazzling as I stopped breathing. I was stuck in a daze like a fool with my mouth open.

“Y-Yes?”

“I saw it written in a book before.”

“Ah. You saw?”

I recalled the book I left at the table in my room. It was an ordinary romance novel that my sister gave. Because I had nothing better to do, I often read it over and over again.

Looks like I forgot to take it back. Anyway, I was surprised to hear him call me a ‘Lady’.

…I didn’t think he could remember that from the book.

“Is this good enough?”

Looking at Knox staring at me indifferently, I wondered if this was how he felt when he first became the Grand Duke.

I nodded quickly.

“Yes, it was very good. So, could you move a little?”

Sir, your face is not very good for my heart.1

“But is there anything you could do for me in the forest?”

Knox was the one who asked me to go together, and now he was asking this kind of question. This guy amazes me. He was the one that just seduced me to go with him.

“Of course there is. We are talking about the Night forest where I’ve been living my entire life. I’ll of course be of help in that forest. Perhaps even a lot of help?”

“I don’t think you could even touch a bug with your hands.”

“… I can catch bugs. I might not be able to catch them as well as you but I can protect you from poisonous plants lest you get hallucinations or tell you the weaknesses of monsters. You weren’t expecting to travel through this forest without knowing anything, were you?”

“Maybe in ignorance?”

“… I think you heard me wrong. I said you can’t travel in this forest alone without a guide.”

I rolled my eyes.

Yes, I was doing alright though I guess I lost a piece of my sanity back there.

But why does Knox keep refusing me?

Realising that I had been working so hard to prove my worth, I immediately frowned. Actually, it was safer for me if I didn’t go with him so why was I hesitating to keep the promise with my sister? But I didn’t worry for long.

“Try going tomorrow instead. I have something I have to look into.”

With a grunt, I got off my butt. Knox’s gaze followed my movements.

“Have we met before, in the past?”2

“Nope, this is our first-time meeting.”1

If he had never entered the forest before, we would have never seen each other. This was something that could not possibly happen because of the original plot.”

Knox kept asking me questions one after the other.

“The do you just give your help to anyone like me?”

“Uhm, I don’t think so. First of all, I don’t think I’ve come across anyone but you before…”

From his gaze that felt as cold as ice, I doubt he could understand or be grateful for the kindness I have shown him so far.

“Anyways, it’s nothing like that. It’s just… I don’t feel comfortable sending just you alone.”

Avoiding his gaze, I scratched my cheek and smiled awkwardly.

“I mean, life is not meant to be lived alone, right?”

“I have a different opinion.”

“Why would you? Isn’t life about living with other people?”

Then, Knox looked at me for a moment before closing his lips. He seemed to be agonising over something before opening his mouth again.

“Then, does that mean you’re letting me into your life?”
