My Swarm Academia: Call Of The Void

Chapter 42 - Well, that was Fun

After the medley and a couple of anime songs, Kai put his performance to an end. He dismissed the changeling he was wearing and let the other one retrieve the speakers.

The setup taken down, Kai sat into his seat and leaned his head onto the desk. He was tired. Exhausted, even.

Unfortunately, not only did the genetic shuffle put him in pain, the class was now pestering him. He wasn't even that good a singer. Passable for karaoke or being ridiculous, but not professional by any means.

It took just a few moments to be done with them.

"Guys, I had a really long night, so if you wouldn't mind piping down? Thanks. Oh, and let this be a reminder that I mean it when I say that I will help you out with anything." Kai put his head back down and pressed hard on his temples. While that actually caused more pain, it was a sharper pain that drew away from the all-encompassing ache that went down to his bones.

"Oguchi-san! Why are you showing such blatant disrespect for this school!"

Iida was the first and only one severely bothered. Well, everyone had varying opinions on his performance, ranging from "why?" (Kaminari, who asked for it as a joke) to "that wasn't bad, but did he really have to dress like that?" (Jiro, who appreciates music, but not crossdressing). Nobody wants to know what Mineta thought. [TN1]

"Uh, on request. I said as much yesterday. I'm surprised you are still being majime about my choices regarding the rules," Kai said without lifting his head. He tapped his foot on the floor to summon a changeling. The changeling took Kai's form and sat on the desk in an attentive pose.

"If you want, I could lie on the floor, and Matt here can take care of upholding the class' image. Look at him- the picture of obedience!" "Matt" pulled a textbook out from Kai's bag and diligently began reading, adding glasses to complete the look.

"Straighten up before class starts! This is as much for your own good as for this school!"

"I think you know how serious I am about being a hero- been one for ten years. Some good rest does great for hero-ing," Kai said, slinking off the chair and onto the floor. Luckily, his seat was next to the window, and there was enough of a gap that if he curled up around the chair, he wouldn't get in anyone's way. Matt sat down in the chair and, now that its legs were covered by the desk, shifted its flesh back into a nebulous mass to cushion Kai's rest.

"Get up! You can't just lie down during class!"

"Perhaps, but I'd like to," Kai said, letting Matt lip-sync and look at Iida for him. Changelings couldn't talk, but in this case, he could at least make it look like it. "So unless you give me a valid reason not to, I'd like to rest from last night's tortures." The corner under the window was well shielded from sunlight, a benefit that Kai didn't think about before going down, but much appreciated.

"You're being disrespectful!"

"True, but not valid enough."

"You could be looking up a girl's skirt!" Mineta interjected excitedly. Suddenly, he was jealous of Kai, who would probably be able to get away with it between his power and attitude. That, and he was in front of a girl to be able to do so, Mineta thought, looking at Jiro. But if he couldn't do it, he wasn't going to let Kai do it.

"First off, Mineta, I'm not you, and that is a valid reason for me to get up." Matt stood up and let Kai get back up in his place. As he put his head back down onto the desk, he pulled a card out of his pocket.

"Second, I've decided to refund your favor card," Kai said as he tossed it to Mineta. "It's not likely to happen, and if it did, I shudder to think of what monstrosity I could cause.

"Thirdly," Kai pointed at Iida without looking up, "if you think that heroes should uphold the image of heroism, go after the jackass that is in second place, and not little old me who is just too tired and aching to care about how I look.

"He, in my mother's words, 'has a stick shoved so far up his a.s.s that it smacks passersby whenever he wags his forked tongue.' I upheld my promise to serve, even though it was a weird request. You are just being a maj-sack. Besides, I'm sure that Aizawa-sensei won't mind."

"That's not the point!" Iida protested.

"Perhaps, maj-sack."

"WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN!"

"That you are so focused on the rules that you are ignoring some bits of common sense in the process," Kai said calmly, keeping his head down to rest. "Things like, 'will this person listen or even care,' or, 'are the teachers bothered,' or, 'is it wise to keep yelling at the guy who has a kill streak higher than your IQ and is fresh off a night of intense pain and little sleep.'"

Iida had no words. The rules were important, but when he put it that way… Everyone took a couple steps back from Kai.

"Thank you. Sorry for being a bit grumpy. Now, I am going to sit here quietly paying attention and participating in class, if you will just let me rest."

Kai had Matt reach into his pocket to pull out his phone. There was still some time to check out the internet before Aizawa came. The changeling checked on the news of the day. All Might was at it again, saving people on the way to work. Nice. Whether he had worked through everything or not, he was at least not going to shut down any time soon.

"Good news guys! Yagi-san is coming today!"

"Can't you- never mind."

"Good job Iida! Knowing which battles to fight and how to fight them is important!" Though some may think otherwise, he wasn't making fun of him. This wasn't much, but it was progress.

"So… what were you doing last night?" Deku asked cautiously.

"Just scrambling my DNA like an egg. You wouldn't believe the taste it puts into your mouth."

The class chose to ignore that. It was the only way to get used to whatever was going to come out of Kai's mouth next. Besides, Aizawa just arrived.
