My World Now

Chapter 17 - The Market

The sunrise is peaking over the hills and I am leaving the inn. I've spent the night working on my lightning and am now able to direct it up my sword or any metal item that is touching my skin. I also am able to make lightning cover a small part of my body like a hand or arm, stun gun style. My progress is pretty quick sense I've been working on two elements for the last few years.

I turn towards the barn and get the Raybacks hooked up to the wagon. we head to the market area. I park the wagon next to a fountain and jump down. There are a few merchants already here. One selling cloth and another has weapons. I see one with jewelry and the last has a lot of weird looking items. I hook the Raybacks up and decide to head over to the other merchants before I setup.

The first merchant has cloth of all colors and patterns from golds, reds, one is blue with silver stars. From stuff that feels like wool and others that feel like silk or cotton. One is a black with grey swirls but feels as strong as iron mesh. They are all on wooden rolls that hang from racks. I ask him on his prices and take a few wool feeling ones in colors of sky blue and orange, as well as silk in red and yellow.

I ask about the iron one and buy rolls of each. As I'm passing him three gold coins for the lot I ask him about Shirin needles. He takes a few minutes looking and comes up with about ten packs saying, "These are the only Shirin needles I've got. They are of the highest quality and the only needles known that can be used with Iota thread." There are five in each pack. I pass him five bronze and get his helper to bring them back to my wagon for me.

I think about my money issue I'll see about trading for the spices and alchemy items. Ive got the gold bars but I need a metal smith or lender/buyer for that.

The coins are different then on earth but basically it goes like this

Ten copper = bronze

Twenty bronze = silver

Fifty silver =gold

There is also alcamit and dumat

100 gold = Alacamit

1000 Alacamit = Dumat

The other currency is the Crystals They can be tricky

Water, Earth, Fire and Wind crystals are worth 1 bronze all the way up to three silver

The Sun, Nature, Lightning, Moon and Ice crystals depend on what is in short supply and can be priced from 1 silver to five Alacamits

The last is the Shine crystal that is worth at least 12 Dumat to as high as 200

The trade or sale of any raw crystals above a basic elemental is prohibited unless through a special kingdom registered Crystal Atler as it's called.

I head to the next stall he has weapons of all kinds from axes to maces. Elemental swords and knifes to ones of gold, silver and iron. Some have intricate designs to more practical plain looking ones. After taking a good look I move on.

The next one is a jewelry stall with rubes, sapphires, emeralds and quartz. Some are in silver with ringlets of gold. There are rings, bracelets, hair pieces, earrings, and necklaces even belts with buckles of pure cobalt. There are elemental crystals carved with symbols and wrapped in titanium and silver. From plain to ornate a feast for the eyes. The merchant keeps holding items up to me and saying, "This will look wonderful on you, but sadly it can't compare to your beauty" I wave to him after a few minutes as I move on.

The last stall has weird things from sola legs(blue frog like) to bullwinf wings(pink bat like). I'm about to move on when a smooth white leg bone catches my eye. I reach down and pick it up. It has an unusual white sheen and is over 5.5 feet long and six inches thick. As I'm looking the man says, "Oh you have wonderful eyes that's a solid Dumuck bone. I've only got 4. It's a special kind of bone only found in their lower legs." Still looking at it I say, "I'll take all four. Do you also have Bulbrib skin."

He rubs his hands together and says, "Yes, yes I do." He has his helper bring out a skin folded up the skin pile is four feet by three and taller then I am. The skin is a magenta and orange color. He places his hand on top of the pile and says, "This is very expensive. Comes from the deadly Bulbrib snake. This beast was over 200 meters when he shed this skin. You can have it for 10 gold coins." I d.i.c.ker him down to 5 and have his helper deliver it to my wagon.

Once I get back to the wagon I pull out one of the leg bones again. After I few minutes I'm positive, this is pure Ivory. I put it away and get to setting out my wares. The dried fruit and meat go well and a guy looking at the skins tries to get me to sell him them for three copper instead of ten bronze each. The next guy who comes by buys them with out question.

One man passes by after a few hours and comes to a sudden stop. He is a human with yellow skin and has on green baggy pants and a shirt with a green over coat. He has green hair and a large floppy hat with glasses. He reminds me of a thin over sized leprechaun at about 6.3.

He starts talking excitedly about my herbs and uses a nature crystal on my potions saying they are some of the highest quality he's found. He owns both the alchemist store and the herbal store. When I tell him I need alchemic items we agree to get together when I'm done here and see what we can trade. He helps me put all the herbs and potions back into my wagon.

I'm putting the last basket back in the wagon when five men come up. they all are thin and tall with orange skin and green hair. They all have on the same uniform, orange pants and a yellow shirt. There is a symbol on their shoulders of a SURa with the word Yotal diagonally across it. That's when I see one more, a fat guy, his belly rolls over his belt like he has a beer belly. he says, "We will be taking all the food here ."

He throws me a bronze coin and they start taking the last ten baskets of food I have left. I'm about to say something when the herbalist grabs my arm. When he has my attention he shakes his head no, fear in his eyes. We watch them leave with the last of my wares. He whispers, "Follow me to my alchemist shop, we can talk there." I get up onto the wagon and motion for him to climb up as well. He joins me and points the way to his shop.

Once there I get water for the Raybacks and some food. After I finish hooking them up and we head inside. He leads me to a small table in the corner and he collapses into one of the two chairs. I sit down across from him and silently wait a few minutes for him to start talking.

"Those men are Liege Yotal's men." He gets up and starts a pot of tea. Then comes back. "You give them whatever they want or you will turn out just like the north side of the city. No matter how unreasonable the request or what they want it's safest to keep your head down and do what they want you to." He is silent for awhile and then gets up to get the tea and cups.

The tea has a spicy almost mint scent to it. We both sit drinking for a few minutes before I ask, "Why hasn't anyone done anything?" He sets the cup down and says, "we have tried. All we really can do is tell the inspectors. He shows them what he wants or buys them off. We just don't have the power or money to do anything, no one does." He sighs then looks out the window toward the city. "One of these days we will be rid of him."

He continues to talk about the issues in the town for awhile. Once he finishes his first cup he turns the conversation to business. He gets all the potions I have and herbs in return I get talnac, Regan charcoal, cilium, higphot, limestone, taric and fulkan(potassium nitrate, calcium, sodium, mercury, and sulfur). I don't tell him I've got loads more potions in my Void bag.

After the trade I ask him, "What makes this Regan charcoal different from normal charcoal." He looks at me and smiles, "It is refined by the Regans of course and they use nature magic to do so. That means it has healing properties."

After I leave the alchemist shop I take my wagon back to the market. I look around there are so many stalls now from candy and fresh bread, to drinks and junk stalls. I stop at a spice merchant and he has golden root. I ask if he has Silma, and Toric. He produces spices that smell kinda like cinnamon and garlic. The smells are a little strange, the garlic smells somewhat sweet, the cinnamon has a natural lemon scent, the ginger smells like it has hot peppers in it. I add them to them to the wagon and continue to look around but I can't find netting anywhere.

After that I go back to the inn. I climb into the wagon and put one of the Dumuck leg bones in my Void bag and then take a look at the list. I pull a basket out of my Void bag and start adding stuff to it for Wizzal: 5 bars lead, five bars gold, five bars silver. Then I add quartz, rubies, emeralds. "As well as," I find I'm talking to myself, "it's not on the list." I look again. "Nope not there the stabilizer what was it called? Oh yes Zuital and the catalyst he requested Thibel."

I jump down out of the wagon and am about to head down the street when I stop and pull a jar out of my Void bag. When I open it a small black flame sits in the bottom of the jar. I tip it upside down and when it hits the ground it makes a poof sound and grows bigger before settling into the shape of a small dog. I look down at it and say, "Turn into a mouse and hide over near the side of the building. If anyone touches my wagon turn them to ash, but don't hit the wagon.

I watch the flame shrink into the shape and size of a mouse and vanish into the shadow of the building. Once it vanishes I turn and head back to the alchemist shop.

I can still smell the owner here so I knock and ask him if he wants to do another trade. He looks interested and says, "I'd love to but I don't see anything." I look at him smile and say, "I'll need to come in to show you." He looks surprised tells me to come in and draws the curtain. I walk over to the table and motion for him to sit. He takes a seat, looks at me, and waits. I look back at him and say, "I need all the Thibel and Zuital you have in stock. What I'm about to show you I got at a Florensin village and you can have them all for what I need."

I reach into my Void bag and pull out a large hand full of crystals. As he watches I drop ten crystals on the table in front of him his eyes lock onto the two Ice crystals and the Sun crystal all the rest are high quality basic elemental crystals. He looks at the crystals swallows and says, "add a Moon crystal and this never happened," I reach in the bag and pull out a Moon crystal a little over an inch long from my bag. He stares at the crystal for a minute then snaps out of it.

He picks up the crystals heads in back and returns with two very large bags the size of a basketball. He doesn't even look at me as I pick them up and head back out the door. Once I get back to my cart I jump back in and reach into the Space bag.

Inside the Bag

I head through the library see Neens and say, "you better tell Wizzal to get to the Rayback field if he wants first pick of the supplies. I head down the hall, through the village and out to the field. When I get there I reach into the bag.

Outside the Bag

I'm in the wagon, supplies all around me. I jump down and get out the left side pole. I hook it up to the wagon. Then blindfold the Raybacks. After I get them in the bag I go place the bag over the pole on the back of the wagon. It vanishes with a huge wind. I say, "Darkness! Where are you?"

A small black mouse appears from around the building and stops, sitting in front of me. I take the jar out of the Void bag and hold it out in front of me. The small mouse turns into a thin line of black fire and enters the jar. I cover it and put it back in the Void bag turn towards the inn and up to my room. when I get in the room I shut the door and sit on the bed. Then join the Raybacks in the bag.

In the Bag

I can see Wizzal hurrying down the hill followed by Neens and Rayba. I remove the blindfolds from the Raybacks and when I turn back to the wagon Neens and Rayba already have that heavy basket of ore in between them carrying it towards the lab. Wizzal is in the wagon the bags of Thibel and Zuital in his hands. As I pass by I say, "Keep a list" I hear him say, "Why don't you at least help?"

I smile wave at him over my shoulder and say, "I'm not the slave. You should just be happy I like you. I'll leave some spikes for you in the lab." As I head into the village I laugh as I hear him say, "I can live with that."

When I enter the lab I see a new addition to his wall. It looks like a dart board that has the word Spikes across it. I smile grow my tail out and with a flick three spikes shoot into the board one hitting dead center. I smile as I leave the room and cross into the library's side room. As I pass through the door the barrier comes up and I enter into the bag.

Outside the Bag

I'm sitting on my bed. The Space bag beside me. I look out the window it's a little past afternoon and the market is starting to slow down. I've done what I came to do at this town. Now there is just one thing to do. I smile and look towards the roof of Liege Yotal's home. He owes me money and this might just pass the time till night falls.
