Chapter 15: Deal

Over the next few days, Song Yan’s phone calls to harass Xia Lin decreased in number, and Xia Lin guessed that he spent most of his time staring at the blurry picture of Yu Luotong on his phone.

Xia Lin finally ended his hard work of tutoring on the eve of the school year and took Zhou Shuo back to B City.

On the morning of the first day of school, Song Yan rode his windy mountain bike to Xia Lin’s door as usual and shouted Xia Lin’s name.

Not long after, the Xia family’s housekeeper came out and said to him, “Our second young master and Zhou Shuo left the house half an hour ago, didn’t he tell you?”

Song Yan was stunned, “When did he tell me?”

As he spoke, he took out his mobile phone and looked at it one-by-one, there was indeed a text message lying quietly in the mailbox.

“…What the hell, a text message to get rid of me? I’m so busy in the morning where do I have time to read text messages!”

Song Yan cursed and left.

When he arrived at the classroom, it was only a few minutes before the morning reading session, and Xia Lin was already sitting in his seat, writing English words silently with his head down.

Song Yan, gasping for breath, walked up to him and slammed his schoolbag onto his desk, “What do you mean, Xia Lin?”

The noise was so loud that it scared all the students around.

The two were known to be inseparable buddies in the class, and their relationship was as close as glue, and they had never fallen out over anything. Therefore, Song Yan’s roar managed to silence the originally rowdy classroom instantly, and everyone was speculating what had happened to force Song Yan to fall out with Xia Lin in public.

Zhou Shuo’s seat was next to Xia Lin’s, just across the aisle from him, and when he saw Song Yan’s fury as he ran in, he had an inkling that something bad was going to happen. When he saw Song Yan drop his school bag, he jumped to his feet, ready to intervene in case they got into a fight.

However, the expected clash of arms did not happen, because Xia Lin was calm, or rather, he was already mentally prepared to handle Song Yan’s anger.

He slowly finished writing the last letter of the alphabet before he looked up at Song Yan: “What do you mean?”

“Don’t play dumb, why didn’t you wait for me this morning?”

“I had to finish writing 50 English words silently before the morning reading session started.” Xia Lin said, showing Song Yan his densely written word book, “If I waited for you, I wouldn’t be able to finish the task in time a- or did you expect me to pull you out of your warm blanket a half hour before, just so you could go to school with me?”

“Uh…” Song Yan was a little exasperated. In this winter, asking him to get up half an hour early was like asking him to die.

“Then you shouldn’t just send me a text message to get rid of me. In the future, you have to call me in advance to tell me when you encounter such things.”

“There’s no need,” Xia Lin said lightly, “I’ll leave half an hour earlier for school every day, and you can’t get up early, so we’ll each leave at our own time, there’s no need to force ourselves to go to school together.”

Song Yan didn’t say anything, just stared at Xia Lin with a pair of dead eyes, and only after a long time did he say, “Xia Lin, do you have to do this?”

“Which one?”

“You know it well in your own heart! Ever since I came back from Australia, you’ve been acting weird, if you have any grievances against me just say it!”

Xia Lin was silent for a moment and raised her head to look at Song Yan with a calm face, “I remember you said that no matter what I did, you would stand by me, right?”

Of course Song Yan remembered this sentence, but he always felt that there was something wrong.

Xia Lin continued, “Actually, I don’t need you to do anything for me, after all, the university entrance exam is my own business and you can’t help me. However, I hope you won’t disrupt the routine I have set down for this and won’t affect my study progress.”

At this point in the conversation, the meaning of mutual distancing had already been expressed very clearly. Xia Lin took a deep breath and prepared himself mentally for Song Yan to break off with him.

Song Yan’s chest rose and fell for a moment, then suddenly slapped the table with force: “You should have said so earlier, it’s just a matter of getting up half an hour earlier, there’s no reason why you can do it and I can’t. It’s a deal, from tomorrow onwards, I’ll also go out half an hour earlier, you can’t not wait for me then!”

Xia Lin was a bit dumbfounded, when did they have such a deal?

He didn’t believe that Song Yan couldn’t hear the meaning of his words, but Song Yan kept pretending to be confused and insisted on going against his wishes, so he couldn’t think of any effective countermeasures.
