Chapter 2

The Smell of Perfume

Fill delightfully ran among the many trees.
In order to collect the wyvern Fill defeated, he ran down the mountain.

As a result of being blown away farther than expected, recovery was difficult, but he was beyond happy as he obtained fresh wyvern liver and meat.

Fill’s grandfather, Zandolph, is praised to be the Great Sage among the magicians and wisemen, but after concealing his illness for several months, his original slim body was now similar to a dead tree.

Fill nursed his grandfather every day, but the day before yesterday, he finally woke up throughout the day. He regained his consciousness yesterday, but his grandfather only said foolish things.

“I’m going to die, prepare yourself,” he repeated many times.

“Don’t worry, Jii-chan won’t die. If you die, you’d become the undead king, right. That’s what you always say.” 1T/N: Jii-chan = grandfather but said in an intimate way[/ note]

“Heh, you’re right. I was going to become the undead king. However, I must disappear from in front of you for the time being.”

“When are you going to disappear? Around the time the moon becomes full?”

“That’s called one month. Well, there’s no meaning to have a calendar living in the mountain like this though…… Rather than that, you have no common sense as usual. Did I make a mistake in my way of raising you……”

Jii-chan laughed with a self-deprecating feeling, but it was the truth.

Jii-chan wanted Fill to reach the truth of sorcery and only taught him magic ever since he was very young. He wanted to take a peek at the abyss of sorcery that even he himself could not see.

After that, he learned the concept of days of the week from Jii-chan, but even so, Fill has not experienced it personally. Even as he heard that Jii-chan was approaching his time of death, he didn’t think that Jii-chan was going to die. He did not think that he was going to be left behind by himself, and going earlier alone to the place called heaven.

Zandolph, Jii-chan, lived with his grandchild Fill together deep in the mountains.
For an eternity.
During the day, the two studied magic, and in the evening, they submerged in a stone pot bath fueled with firewood while stargazing.
That life should have continued his whole life.
Fill was convinced while climbing the mountain, but he noticed a certain thing.
No, he smelled a certain scent.

“…… Sniff sniff, there’s some sort of strange smell.”

Fill’s sense of smell, that was equal to a wolf’s, was given a stamp of approval from Jii-chan.
He immediately smelled the foreign scent.

In this mountain that only Jii-chan and Fill live in, he had never smelled that sort of smell, not even a single time.

“……No, I’ve smelled this a long time ago.”

In the past, there was a period when Jii-chan descended and left the mountain delightfully.

There were many times where he left during the night, and in the morning, he came back with an intense smell hanging around that smelled like boiled down flowers.

There were also lip marks on his cheeks.

He asked him what he was doing, but Jii-chan said, “It’s still too early for you,” and didn’t teach him anything. However, one day, “You’re already old enough, so I’ll give this to you,” and received a weird small bottle.

The smell attached on Jii-chan at night was the same smell as the small bottle.
It was the smell of concentrated flower solution.

It was a nice smell, but it was too strong for Fill who has a strong nose, so he never put it on a single time. Even now, if he goes back home, it should be lying somewhere in the treasury storehouse.

That flowery smell tickles the nasal cavity, but where exactly does this smell come from?
Sniff sniff, Fill confirmed, but that smell drifted from the mountain road.
The mountain road created by Fill and Jii-chan.

Fill can move faster than a monkey, so does not often use it, but even so, it seems like there’s a human that rare traveler that lost their way. Unfortunately, Fill has not seen that person’s figure/appearance yet, but.

Perhaps, the traveler might have lost their way.
His curiosity ached.
Fill has not seen another human other than Jii-chan.

Jii-chan said that there were tons of dangerous people within humans, so it was better to get to know other people after he became an adult.

There’s a village at the foot of the mountain, but Fill has not gone there even til this very day.

One day, he would try to go to a place called a village where humans lived or a place called a city, and observe humans, but currently, he might be able to take into action going down the mountain road.

Fill who thought so headed towards that way.
It wasn’t as if Fill forgot to deliver the wyvern’s liver to Jii-chan.

Right now, the wyvern’s liver is still wiggling in the back sack. It probably wouldn’t even be a problem if he sidetracked for nearly an hour.

Also, if it was really a traveler on the mountain road, then Fill has the obligation to confirm it.

Jii-chan used to be the protector of this mountain before he was bedriddened by his illness, but that role is now taken over by the grandson himself, Fill thought conceitedly.

If that traveler were some bad guy, Fill should punish them.
It could be a hunter aiming for the right hand of his best friend big bear.

It could be a poacher targeting the carbuncle jewel.
Or possibly a thief targeting Jii-chan’s treasure.

At worse, it might be those guys who were aiming for Jii-chan’s life. Jii-chan is the strongest, but he’s currently down due to sickness. If they were aiming for him, now is the chance.

If Jii-chan dies, Fill would probably cry like when you hit your pinky against a rock.

He could image all of that.
Therefore, he decided to confirm the traveler on the mountain road.
If it were a bad group of people, they’ll receive only a slightly bitter experience.
They’ll be beaten to the point where they won’t die.
Slapped on the face enough to make them cry.
Even though Fill may seem like this, he’s a champion of justice. He does not feel hesitation to use his power.
