Chapter 19.1
Elyan’s hesitation was short-lived. “I accept your offer,” he said. He had yet to figure out how Lobelia had gleaned such information or how she could make an advantage of the cursed blue diamond, but somehow he felt she was trustworthy. Was it because of the cloud or mystery that surrounded her? Or perhaps her confident tone? Elyan’s intuition and his instincts as a businessman screamed at him to accept this opportunity. Not only would this woman get rid of the blue diamond that was causing him trouble at the moment, but she would bring him greater fortune in the future, as she claimed.
“It can’t be free to solve such a headache. What can I do?” he asked her.
“Let’s keep walking,” replied Lobelia.
Elyan slightly extended his arm, and they resumed their path along the trail. When they arrived at a place obscured by shrubs on all sides, Lobelia opened her mouth.
“Get me an invitation to Countess Dora’s salon party a week from now,” she said.
“An invitation?” asked Elyan, tilting his head. Although Countess Dora was a close handmaiden of the Empress, Count Dora’s reputation itself did not match that of the Regretina family, so it would not be difficult to secure an invitation. Besides, if it was a salon party instead of a tea party, even a commoner like Lobelia would be able to enter. However, Elyan posed one question:
“Why don’t you ask the Duke? You could have asked the Duke for an invitation to the salon party, and approached me after you had finished preparing,” he asked with pure curiosity. To him, Jade had a great deal of affection for Lobelia, and such request was as insignificant as an ant for the duke.
“To him…” Lobelia trailed off. She wanted to owe the duke the least, and it was because of this that she is trying to become the queen’s court representative. The more she demanded, the greater her disadvantage became.
A contract is a pair of scales that must be constantly leveled. When one party obtains or demands excessively, the balance shifts and the whole structure topples. From then on, the contract ceases to be one, and only a debtor remains. Thus, if Lobelia asked Jade for something, she made sure to pay the price. In exchange for a request, she would have to enter his dreams and treat his curse.
Lobelia pondered and only spoke after a while.
“It has nothing to do with him,” she said, “The blue diamond was something I thought of on my own.”
“Is that so?” asked Elyan, giving her a perplexed glance. “Well, the Duke was never a romantic person,” he mused.
At that, the conversation between the two concluded and they parted without hesitation. Elyan returned to his seat, while Lobelia returned to the lounge where Jade was waiting.
“How did it go?” Jade asked, escorting Lobelia to her seat.
“Alright,” answered Lobelia.
“That gem,” said Jade, “How did you know that Elyan would want to dispose of such a big diamond quickly? Did you fabricate the accident?”
“Me?” Lobelia’s eyes widened at his accusation.
“Yeah,” replied Jade, “It couldn’t possibly be a real curse. I bet you did something tricky and caused a railroad accident…”
“What power do I have to derail the railway to Yarte which is so far away?” Lobelia asked as she burst out laughing. “The curse on that diamond is real.”
Jade frowned at her words; he looked incredulous. “Really?” he asked, still in disbelief.
Lobelia began to explain. “A long time ago, one of the ladies of the Mylix Dynasty asked a stranger to cast a spell on her,” she said. “In the hands of the women of the Mylix family, they are nothing more than a lucky charm, but elsewhere, they become strange objects that call for death. That’s why it’s a family secret, passed down through generations of the Mylix family.”
“But I’ve heard that magic on objects weakens over time,” commented Jade.
“It was less effective, so it ended up being a derailment,” replied Lobelia. “If it had been in ancient form, everyone who touched the diamond would have died.”
“Did Her Majesty the Empress sell the jewel without knowing that?” Jade inquired.
“Yes,” Lobelia nodded. “But even if she knew, Her Majesty would have thought that the magic on the jewel was a scam. To be honest, who believes in that these days?” One would refuse to believe that a noble of Mylix had dabbled in the magic of gypsies, especially an empress that is a descendant of that very house.
“But you knew.”
“I’m a gypsy’s daughter.” Lobelia smiled faintly. “The same reason I recognized the Duke’s curse.”
“Anyway,” she continued, “if I return the jewel to Her Majesty the Empress, everything will be settled. Elyan will get rid of the troubles and benefit at the same time, and I will become Her Majesty’s court representative.”
“I see.”
