Waking up the next day, Soul left the hotel after eating his breakfast and made some for his Pokemon.

Today he would be challenging Rustboro Gym for the first badge. He had finished training both Torchic and Bagon for the upcoming gym battle as they became even stronger than before.

Torchic

Walking towards the gym, Soul could see that it was cover mostly by rocks. It kinda reminds him back at his first gym battle at Pewter Gym. There the gym was also cover mostly by rocks.

Soul: 'Well, they certainly made the gym looks hard.'

He joked in his mind as he opened the door to the gym. Opening it, Soul saw a similar rock battlefield as a person came up to him. It was the gym leader, Roxanne.

Roxanne: Hello, are you here to battle today?

Soul: Yes, I am. Are you perhaps the gym leader of this gym?

Roxanne: Yes. My name is Roxanne and I am the gym leader of Rustboro Gym. If it's okay, can some of my students record our fight? It's for studying.

Soul: Sure, I don't mind about it.

Nodding at this, both of them got into position as the students took out their cameras or phones and started filming.

A judge then came forward and started to explain the rules. After he was done speaking, both Roxanne and Soul called out their Pokemon and got ready to battle.

Soul sent out Torchic, which made Roxanne surprised as she sent a Geodude out.

Roxanne: 'This will be an interesting battle.'

She thought as the battle started.

Soul: Torchic use Ember.

Torchic spits out a ball of flame as it hit Geodude, who didn't take too much damage as it shakes it off.

Roxanne: It's my turn now, Geodude use Rock Throw!

Geodude summoned a big rock as it was sent flying towards Torchic.

Soul: Jump on the rock and use Low Kick.

Torchic jumped on the flying rock as he used its momentum to boost himself towards Geodude. He then kicked it on the face with one of his talons.

This time Geodude felt pain as it was sent flying.

Roxanne: Geodude! Are you okay?

It stood up and nodded as it held the pain back.

Roxanne: Ok, let's try and keep distances away from it. Use Rock Tomb!

Several rocks were summoned as all of them were sent towards Torchic.

Soul: Dodge them all and use Low Kick once again.

Torchic used the same tactic as he jumped from rocks to rocks. Seeing this, Roxanne smiled.

Roxanne: Now Geodude! Use tackle.

Geodude, who appeared behind the rock hit Torchic, who didn't expect it to suddenly appear.

Torchic was then sent backward as he fell ) hard on the ground.

Soul: Torchic!

Roxanne: Don't let them come back up! Use tackle once again!

Geodude rushed towards Torchic who jumped up from the ground.

Soul: Torchic use Sand Attack on Geodude eyes!

Torchic didn't waste any time and kicked some sand on the ground against Geodude, who was suddenly blinded by sand as it missed.

Soul: Now, finish it with Low Kick!

Torchic kicked Geodude from behind as it was sent flying once again. This time, Geodude fainted.

Judge: Geodude is unable to battle! This match goes to Torchic!

After he said that, Roxanne looked at Soul with an amazed expression as she returned Geodude back to its Poke Ball.

Roxanne: You did a great job, take a rest.

Soul: You too Torchic, you did an amazing job.

Both of the Pokemon got returned to their Poke Balls as two new ones got sent out.

Soul decided to use Bagon for this one, while Roxanne used Nosepass.

The battle starts once again with Roxanne orders Nosepass to use Rock Tomb.

Soul: Dodge the attack and use Defense Curl.

Bagon dodged the incoming attack but was hit a few times. Even though he was hit, he didn't feel much due to how much defense he has along with the defense boost from Defense Curl.

Soul: Now use Dragon Pulse.

Hearing this, Roxanne was once again surprised as she didn't expect Bagon to have such a powerful move.

Roxanne: Nosepass use Harden!

Having no other choice, Roxanne was forced to play defense as Bagon sent out a beam with a dragon head as it hit Nosepass.

An explosion occurred as Nosepass was hit badly from the attack. Seeing this, Roxanne panicked a little bit as Soul ordered for the next move.

Soul: Use Dragon Dance.

Bagon begins to do some dance as an orange light surrounds him.

Roxanne: Stop them and use Rock Tomb!

Several rocks were sent towards Bagon, who kept on dancing as he dodged the attack without getting hit this time.

Soul: Use Dragon Pulse and let's finish this!

Bagon sent out an even more powerful beam as two dragon heads could be seen biting on Nosepass as it exploded.

An even bigger explosion occurred as both Soul and Roxanne blocked themselves from the shockwave.

When the dust was cleared, everyone could see that Nosepass has fainted.

Judge: Nosepass is unable to battle! The winner of this match is Bagon! Therefore the challenger has won the battle!

All of the students clapped as Soul returned Bagon back and walked over to Roxanne.

Soul: Thanks for the fight, it's been a long time since I have battle a gym.

Roxanne: You make it sound like you haven't battled for a very long time. Tell me, how many gyms have you won.

Soul: 9 if I count yours.

Roxanne: I see… anyways, congrats for beating me. Here, you have earned it.

She gave Soul the Stone Badge as he left the gym. 

He left the city and walked back to Route 4 where his next destination is Dewford City.
