Project Overworld

Chapter 16 - Settlement

Keith looked towards the horizon as wind blew on his face.

The landscape paraded before his eyes and the sun slowly descended as the day progressed.

He had been driving for a few hours, and he felt it was still not enough.

It has been two weeks since the launch of the first Project Overworld's server. The server hosted twenty thousand players until now, but it could host more.

"Advanced Simulations" limited the initial number of player as a test, but they would eventually increase the charge of players the server could hold if no major problem was encountered.

The two-week-mark was hit the day before Keith's departure, and the server capacity now raised to a hundred thousand players.

Thus, Keith wanted to go the further away possible from the world spawnpoint.

Soon, guilds would expand their territory as it would not suffice for five times as much players.

Those who did not wish to join the existing guilds would have to travel far from spawn to find a suitable place to establish onto.

Keith continued for another hour before he noticed he ran out of fuel.

He stopped near some trees and started cutting them into small pieces that could fit in his vehicle's engine.

It took him a few extra dozens of minutes, but he was now ready to go for another hundred miles.

He was quite enjoying the trip, as he was left alone with his thoughts.

The only downside was the constant buzzing of the vehicle's engine, but he could not do anything about it yet.

'It should be enough for now.', Keith thought after stopping to fill his wood stock.

The distance he put between him and the spawnpoint should be enormous.

By foot, one had to travel for several weeks to fall upon this place. That is, if someone knew exactly where to go and find him.

However, Keith's journey would not be put to an end yet. He had to find a good place to build his home onto.

A place that had easy access to drinkable water, as well as essential resources such as wood and minerals.

After spending the rest of the real-life day searching for a suitable location, he unfortunately did not find anything interesting.

Hence, after the end of the week-end, he spent most of his free-time travelling long distance in game to find a good place.

Finally, three days later and after traveling for almost a hundred miles more than he initially expected, Keith established his base near a lake.

It had a breath-taking view, and Keith was very joyful about finding this place.

The following days, he spent his in-game time constructing various workshops and electrical installations.

He did not bring as much iron as he wanted with him on his journey because he had simply not enough space to work with.

Fortunately for him, he discovered a few iron deposits after digging around some mountains and he could now work at his heart's contempt.

Keith made a few plans for his future base that would blend in the environment.

He also wanted some automation as well as defenses in case some players decided to wander around here.

However, he first started designing a new and improved drill, more than twice the size as the one he left in his previous base, which purpose would be to dig tunnels under the mountains to find rare resources.

The more he thought about it, the more he realized he needed exponentially more ores.

However, his main purpose was to finally discover petroleum, as it would boost his working efficiency by leaps and bounds.

- "I heard that the new players are forming some large groups. The Pioneers' reign doesn't seem to be that overwhelming anymore.", Amber inquired.

- "I also was informed about it, but I think it neither good or bad. The Pioneers are weakened, but this also means more potential enemies for us."

Alan was back in his office after leading a few explorations.

New Dawn lost a few good weapons in the explosion back then in Keith's cave, but they started forging heavily as of recently.

They could not reproduce firearms yet, as they did not discover any gunpowder, but most of them had a set of iron in their inventory.

It was also a strong argument for new players to join their guild over others.

- "Our guild has improved a lot since the last battle. We quadrupled our workforce and our territory is expanding while we are building sturdy walls." Alan explained.

- "If only we had better technology..."

Alan fell silent for a moment and replied : "What is done is done. This betrayal hurt us pretty hard, but we have to move on."

After a moment, he continued : "However, we cannot wait passively for the other guilds to attack us. The Pioneers first attacked us, but this time they will taste our steel. We need more territories, we need more members. If we want to lead our project to completion, we will need every little help we can find."

He grinned and finished with a harsh voice : "That is why, we will go to war."
