Project Overworld

Chapter 2 - Base Setup

It was a small cave under a hill, a perfect place for Keith to setup his base inside. He started cleaning the floor and gathered all rocks in the same corner, examining each one of them to see if they could be used in some way.

Crafting in Project Overworld works similar to reality. There is no special interface helping the player; on the contrary, he needs to understand what he is doing. Crafting a rudimentary tool is pretty straight-forward, you just have to sharpen some flint and use it to peel some wood from trees, for example. You could also use a sturdy rock and throw it one top of another one and collect some stone debris to make more tools. One could say it's similar to prehistorical survival.

However, every single interaction with this virtual world is simplified. Players have access to an inventory to carry material and their avatar are naturally strong. In addition to this, the game is endowed by a proficiency system allowing players to be more efficient performing the same action over and over.

As for the manufacturing itself, it is greatly facilitated as the details you put into the work are not necessary. If you tie several sticks together with a string, even if the tie is loose or if the sticks are of poor quality, the tool resulting from the operation will be as sturdy as a well-made tool. However, crafting with precision will create even better quality results.

After finding his base, Keith quickly progressed and was now crafting stone tools. Nonetheless he found out he was missing on food and water, two essential resources in this survival game. He made sure he established only a few hundred foots from a river, so water wasn't really a problem. As for the food, he could always hunt some animals with his newly created tools and there was plenty of berry bushes in a forest nearby.

For him, the next step would be to dig up some metals and refining them in order to make more powerful tools. He vaguely knew how to refine some low quality metals with relatively low melting temperatures by heating them over a fire. With that, he would finally be able to break through the copper era.

A few miles away, Amber was waiting for the return of the scouts. She and her friends gathered from the launch, forming a guild named "New Dawn". A few dozen people joined them after a recruitment process, and they all envisioned the project of creating a futuristic civilization.

But they weren't the first one to form a guild, and they were certainly not the biggest. This honor goes to the guild "Overworld Pioneers", counting a few hundred people in their ranks.

With around forty players in total, the New Dawn guild to which Amber belongs should not be underestimated. Still, they decided to move away from the overpopulated spawn in order to focus on their project.

Now that they were far enough away, they needed a lot of space establish their base. That's why Alan, the guildmaster of New Dawn, decided to assign some of the recruited players the role of scouting the terrain.

Though, Amber was pretty bored. She has been waiting for a dozen minutes for the scouts to do their jobs.

"When are they coming back..." Amber complained.

Alan, who seemed to have overheard what she muttered to herself, declared :

- "They are searching for a good place to install our base, it must certainly take a little time."

- "I know, but why did we recruit those random people and why are we not monitoring the region on our own?" Amber replied.

- "If we want to have the prosperous city that we imagined, we must be as numerous as possible. Now, if you want to do scouting yourself, fine, go ahead."

'Jeez, why does Alan always have to be such a cold-hearted person' Amber thought as she walked away to explore the area.

She wasn't really paying attention to the landscape, but she wanted to walk for a bit since she was so bored. After going for quite a while she eventually came across a river and went to quench her thirst. At the time she raised her head, a humanoid form appeared at the entrance of a cave.

'Shit, another player!' Keith thought to himself.
