Project Overworld

Chapter 61 - Sylvan war

Since war has been declared, war should it be. Keith was really happy to put his inventions into use yet again.

This poor little toy has been waiting on its launching pad for so long that it almost rusted out.

Well, that was how Keith viewed this whole situation.

In reality, it has only been a few days since he first assembled this missile and warned the whole playerbase about the suspicious movements in that forest.

This time, however, he would not let this mysterious organization deal some heavy damage to Midgard, Niflheim or any other player's base before eradicating them from the surface of the planet.

'A good thing about wood is that it burns off really easily.' Keith commented in his head. The incendiary warhead of his missile would take care of this matter in no time, especially since he had improved its potency by a lot.

The surface he was about to attack was so much larger than during his first intercontinental mission, so he has had to make a much more brutal weapon to take care of this new group of terrorists.

However, he was really concerned about ruining the whole landscape.

After destroying that first terrorists' hideout, he witnessed from various posts on the Project Overworld's forums that the damage he was responsible for was far from limited to a few marks on the ground.

He had seen several woodlands being set on fire and the crater his missile left on the landscape was really hideous. Obviously, the terrorists' stock of explosives largely contributed to this but there was no reason to think that this new mysterious sylvan organization would not have stocked a few tons of explosives on their own.

Before doing anything, Keith thus left an anonymous message on the forums to tell people from Midgard to bring some of their fire trucks to the forest. It was not anything extravagent, but the municipal teams of the cities has had to hire several inventors to work on vehicles to help them fight against fire.

This need has been discovered just after the first terrorist attack at Midgard.

The explosives laid down by the attackers lighted up some fires throughout the city and it has been a really tedious task to put them all out.

Since then, various iterations of fire trucks has been developed and as of today, both Midgard and Niflheim were each equipped with around twenty of those.

Regardless, the anonymous message was taken quite seriously by everyone as they still remembered the destruction that had been caused by the explosion of the terrorists' hideout a few months ago.

'Now is the time.' Keith thought. 'Let the hostilities begin.'

- "Aren't you afraid that our place may end up exploding just like that terrorist base?" The close confidant of 'Mariachi' asked him.

- "No way they could ever find out where we established exactly. Plus we have scattered our stocks of explosives across everyone's inventory. No amount of bombs could end up making our plan a failure.

Since a few months ago, Mariachi has been contacting players from ear to ear to assemble the largest group of anti-civilization in the game. They too, just like the so called 'Rebellion', were sick of those players turning this game into a civilization simulation.

They felt like there were too many possibilities to end up recreating the real world into this one.

Now, they really had learned a lot from the Rebellion group. Both in term of attack strategy and regarding their own defensive abilities.

First off, they would not build any base or hideout whatsoever. There was no need hinder oneself with such useless features. The forest shall be their home for the time being, and they shall thrive within its tranquility.

Secondly, they would never make the mistake of letting their stocks of explosives on the ground. This is what ultimately led to the end of the Rebellion, as they would have been able to come back from the attack if their stocks did not explode.

Finally, their plan was to attack both Midgard and Niflheim at the same time. This plan had been thought of by numerous heads and it was supposed to be the perfect attack plan. It took into account the police force, the wall thickness, the disposition of buildings and every other parameters that could impact their effectiveness.

They were also all equipped with guns to make sure everyone would be able to take down at least a few players before they died in turn or were captured by the police members.

- "However, we must have alerted them by now. The police force mean. Won't they become an hindrance to our plan?"

- "No, of course not. This is a part of our plan since they will end up leaving the cities vulnerable by coming here. What worries me the most is that we haven't started off our plan yet. I don't know how they got aware of our gathering, but it must have been some snitches. No doubt the Rebellion's end also happened because of them." Mariachi thought out loud. "But we are a lot more prepared for this kind of betrayal since our plan involved being discovered at some point anyways."

Mariachi asked his right arm man to take care of the task of gathering everyone around him. They had to trigger their plan now if they wented to make this attack a success.

_______________

From the small window of his control room, Keith witnessed his missile rise up into the air. He had been cleaning this room a lot recently and everything was more enjoyable to watch now.

After leaving from the large opening in the ceiling, the missile slowly changed its direction towards Yggdrasil. At this point, Keith safely exited the control room and went back to the main computer of his base.

'Let's watch this event from the front row.' Keith decided. He has been waiting for this ever since he spotted out some strange behaviors in that forest. This was the dedication of several hours of work, and Keith really wanted to see this bad boy explode the whole forest.

Well, maybe not the entirety of it, hopefully just what was needed.

Keith has had to disconnect from the game at some point to check on the forums or during some livestreams what was happening on side of Midgard. It seemed like they were creating a defensive front at the edge of the forest while waiting for both the terrorists and the fire to show up. However he made sure he would actually be there at his base once the missile reached its intended destination; He wanted to see it unfold before his eyes.

'Two minutes left before impact.' Keith announced in his head. According to his calculations, there was only a few hundred seconds left for the missile to reach the forest, and even less for people to spot out this strange flying object.

After two minutes that felt like eternity to him, Keith witnessed the missile beginning its descent towards the ground. This spot was a bit further from the middle of the forest, since Keith could not pinpoint the exact place where this mysterious organization was established.

With this kind of attack, he would be relying on the forest fire to take care of everything for him.

One really had to not underestimate the power of a forest fire. Often times, in human history, people got caught by this ravaging natural disaster because they thought they could outrun it. However, once it was a few miles of radius, the intense heat that the fire released could be enough to evaporate the water contained within nearby plants, meaning that it would spread much more easily than before.

According to Keith, either those terrorists would be totally caught off guard or their plan would be put to an end as they would have to run for their lives.

The missile and its warhead was now only a few hundred feet away from land. One second later, it reached the mold soil of the forest. Before the camera went up in the explosion, Keith saw some huge flames coming out of head of the missile.

'Nice, bomb has been planted. Let's check some livestreams to see if they are able to distinguish anything from this wall of leaves.' Keith decided.

With that out of the way, he disconnected from the game. From his real life personnal computer, he discovered an amateur channel trying to reproduce a live broadcast of the event. There even was a nice border on the bottom of the screen to warn about the most recent news in Project Overworld.

The presentator was talking like crazy and saying that a large missile was spotted in the skies before crashing into the forest. A shockwave was even felt from their position and everyone was waiting expectantly for the mysterious group responsible for the murder of their investigation team to come out of the forest.

'Well, for the time being I am going to focus on this one single livestream. Let's watch everyone's reaction to the event.' Keith thought.
