He can also use 'Busoshoku Haki'/ 'Reinforcement Haki'. Which enable him to use his spirit as armor to defend against attacks or to make his attack more potent. Just like its name, it raises his attack and defense capability.

Chakra was easier to learn because of his knowledge of cultivation and observation haki. But when he learns the needs of chakra coils and the astronomical price to awakened it, he nearly despaired. Refusing to give up and waste his point, he waited till he can cultivate. Using a profound vein as his base, he forcefully used his meridians as his chakra pathway system and created dantian to store his chakra.

Because he needs to derive and mold his spiritual energy and physical energy to make chakra, he made Yin and Yang cores. His heart served as yang core, he derives his stamina/physical energy from here. As for spiritual/mental energy, he derives it from his Yin core which located at his temple.
