Rebirth In KurokoNoBasket

Chapter 18 - Training Montage?

Shun and Satsuki proceeded to the dining room, leaving their mothers to talk.

They sat down, but no one said anything. Shun decided to break the ice.

Shun: "You said that you are a manager for the basketball club, where do you go to school."

Shun, of course, knew what school she attended but he had to start the conversation,

Satsuki: "I attend Teiko Middle School."

Shun: "Really, I saw Teiko's games. Your center is tall; I can't believe that he is still a first-year."

Satsuki was a fan of basketball and an outgoing girl, so when Shun started the conversation about basketball, she got immersed in talking.

Shun also had fun talking to her; he stayed away from talking about Middle School basketball they talked about basketball in general, Shun told her about the nice places around the neighborhood, they talked about their favorite shows and other things.

By the end of their conversation, both of them had a good first impression of each other.

[A/N: This is it. The result of their first meeting is a good first impression, nothing much but realistic.]

(POV, change)

Mrs. Momoi: "So, what did you kids talk about."

Satsuki: "Basketball, shows, places around the neighborhood, school life, and other things."

Mrs. Momoi: "You said that he plays basketball, and you are always going on about the Daiki-chan and the team at your school. How do you think he compares to Daiki-chan."

Satsuki: "I don't know, the way they play is different, Daiki-chan is the type that is always ready for attacking and is on the receiving end of the passes, whereas, Kageyama-kun is more of a balanced player he participates in all aspects of the game."

Satsuki: "But I will say this, Tokiwadai won the Nationals last year and are the reigning champions, him being on the team as a first-year itself shows that he is a talented player. Tokiwadai, like my school, is also heading to the Nationals as a Tokyo representative."

Mrs. Momoi: "Who do you think will win if they meet in the Nationals."

Satsuki: "Of course, Teiko will win. My school is the best."

[A/N: She is the manager of Teiko's basketball club, she will want her school to win.]

Satsuki has analyzed the records of the past year of Teiko, and she found that the stats showcased by the current team were better than Teiko had ever seen before.

She was sure that Teiko's performance this year was going to be phenomenal.

(POV, change back to Shun)

Meeting Satsuki was a surprise to Shun, but things returned to normal the next day.

Shun was on a new training menu till the Nationals. Shun's coach had asked him to do a one hundred throw routine along with his daily practice.

Shun had to shoot one hundred shots from different points on the court; from three-feet, five-feer, seven-feet, free throws, elbow to elbow, five-spot midrange, five-spot three-pointers, and 1-Dribble Pull Up drills.

--------------------------------------------------------------

[A/N: Elbow to Elbow Shooting Drill: A shooting drill to teach moving quickly, getting into the shot motion quickly, and squaring up to the basket.

One-Dribble Pull Up Drill: A shooting drill to teach catching the ball in transition and shoot the ball after one-dribble forward.]

--------------------------------------------------------------

Shun was also not allowed to get help in catching rebounds; he had to pick up the balls on his own. Picking up his rebounds emulated an actual game by adding a quick sprint after every shot.

Coach: "You will record your results every day and compare to see your progress."

Shun started his shooting routine and found out that it was not easy, picking up rebounds after every shot made it difficult to get into a rhythm, and the fatigue that built up a little shot after shot made his shooting worse.

Shun continued to make shots after every practice every day, it didn't matter if some of his first-year club mates invited him to hang out with them or if he was tired from the regular practice, he kept doing his shooting drills every day.

Coach also instructed him to do every drill by having someone pass the ball to him. So every day, there was a random member of the club who accompanied him to the practice.

In the beginning days, Shun was slow in getting into his shooting position; he would take time in adjusting the ball in hands, he would even sometime forget to bend his knees before receiving the ball., and the members who were helping him would complain that they were getting late.

But as the days passed, Shun started to get faster in getting into his shooting form, the time it took to complete his drills became shorter, and the complaints stopped.

The members who accompanied him were shocked with his persistence as Shun never missed a day of training and didn't slack off. Members had offered to get the rebounds, but Shun refused as it was part of his training.

The effect of his training spread to the whole club, members who stayed back after training increased, even the regular members up their training.

The shooting practice also revealed one more truth to Shun.

Shun: 'Before I started the shooting practice, I thought that using Perfect Copy to copy moves was enough to increase my skills, but now I know how wrong I was. The copied moves, even if I tried to improve them by fixing them, were not my own. To improve, I needed to find a style that is unique to me.'

The shooting practice showed that the shooting style he developed on his own suited him more than any other style that he had copied.

The day Shun realized that developing his form was the better option; he started to implement the same in all other areas of his skillset.

Shun: 'I realized the truth with not much time left in Nationals, but it is good that I realized it early in middle school. This will help me a lot in the long term.'

Shun was looking forward to the Nationals and the challenges that it would provide.

[A/N: Now don't misunderstand that Shun will not be using Perfect Copy, he will be using as he has been using it until now. Do you guys remember, how Hyūga Junpei's shooting form was like Mibuchi Reo's; but how Mibuchi said that it might be inspired by his but Hyuga had developed it such that it suited him. Shun is also doing the same, he will continue to scan people with Perfect Copy, but he will not be using them directly, but taking inspiration from them, and develop his style through hard work and practice.

And, Shun mainly uses his Perfect Copy ability to scan his opponents and teammates to understand them, so that he could better support his teammates, and defend against his opponents. He is not Kise, so he doesn't need to use it like him.]
