Reborn As A Fox Beastman With Modern Knowledge

Chapter 42 - 42: Extraction Mission 2

As I went down the stairs, a sturdy wooden door blocked my path to the info brokers. I knock three times on the door before a small slit opens up, a pair of eyes examines me.

"Password?" A deep and gruff voice asks.

"Silence." After a short few seconds, a grating, metallic sound that resembles a bolt lock resounded on the other side of the door. As the door opens inward, an imposing figure of a man stood behind the door. Before entering, he pointed his finger at my knife, which I passed to him.

'Good thing he doesn't know about guns.' I thought to myself while patting my holstered M9.

I then calmly walk inside the darkly lit hallway, fitting the atmosphere of an underground lair. Reaching the dark end of the hall is a curtain covering the doorway.

When I passed through the curtain, I saw a bar full of different kinds of liquors lining the shelves and well-furnished lounges. I sat at one of the stools close to the bar.

"Do you know who I should ask for info here?" I ask the bartender.

He quickly nods towards a guy dressed in a fancy suit, sitting in a secluded lounge with two possible bodyguards watching. I guess that's him.

"Thanks."

Before I got off the stool, the bartender asked what drinks he could serve me. Well, since I'm in a bar, I could drink while I'm here.

"I'll like a glass of red wine then."

"Certainly."

Yup, this bar is high class.

"Here's your glass of red wine." Placing it in front of me.

"How much is it?" I ask while taking a sip of the wine. It's delicious.

"It's a complimentary drink for newcomers."

"Oh, thank you."

"Your welcome."

I grabbed my glass of wine and went to the info broker, while slowly nursing my drink.

"Hello! My name is Mattie Achter! Welcome to my fine establishment! What service can I provide you, dear customer?" He cheerfully greeted me., with a hint of scheming behind his voice.

"First, I have a question."

"Certainly! Ask away!"

"Does the 'establishment' include the bar above?"

"Of course! It's my pride and joy! Is something the matter? Did you encounter trouble while in my 'establishment'?" While maintaining his cheerful attitude, he slightly squints his eyes at me and emphasizes the word establishment.

This guy's sharp.

"I did, three men tried to rob me when I passed the alleyway beside your establishment."

"Dear me, that's problematic for my business. I hope you didn't get hurt, sir customer."

I suspect that he knew about this but chose to ignore it, or they were working under him.

"I'm fine, just reminding you about the three dead bodies right on the alleyway."

"Oh, that certainly is a problem, but rest assured, someone will clean them up." He said while noticing a slight curve on his lips. He's amused. "Ok, let's get back to business. What do you need? Depending on the 'needs' you have, it will also depend on the price."

"Info. I need info about the possible spies that infiltrated."

"What a peculiar request, but first, the price."

"How much are you asking for it?"

"I say about 15 silver coins."

That's expensive, good thing I have five gold coins worth of funds. But, let's try to haggle.

"How about 8 silver coins?"

"Ah, negotiating for a price, are we?" He says, c.a.r.e.s.sing his chin while thinking it through. "How about 14 silvers?"

"That's still too high. How about 10?"

"13."

"Hmmm, 12 silvers, and we have ourselves a deal." I extend my hands to him.

"You drive a hard bargain, but that's part of the p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e of business. We have ourselves a deal."

After a good ten minutes or so of listening to him, I got what I need.

One week ago, unidentified individuals breached the intelligence bureau in the capital and got away with s.e.n.s.i.t.i.v.e information. But, got spotted in the process, making every law enforcement unit in the country in the hunt. Damn, it will be hard to look for them if they're on the run or hiding.

"Thanks, I'll be going now."

"Don't you want to stay in my inn for the day? The journey to the capital is long and arduous. I recommend that you rest before going." He said as I was about to go through the curtain.

"I'll take that into consideration, Mr. Achter."

"I hope of doing more business with you!"

As I pass the guard, he returns my knife before he shuts and locks the door behind me. I climb up the stairs to notice that the afternoon sun is setting. Assuming I have a watch, it would be 4 pm, so I went to the market to buy a map before going back to the inn.

Entering the inn, I notice that some people are staring at me with a hint of amazement and fear. I then went to the same bar/innkeeper until I saw tiny droplets of sweat trickling on his forehead.

'Sh-shit, it's the kid.' The bar/innkeeper nervously thought, remembering the time he was peeking. 'Like, who the hell is he!? I saw many deaths in my previous job, but I never expected him to slaughter them! And those skills, he's like a seasoned veteran.' Snapping himself out of his deep thought, he addresses Felix.

"We-welcome back, what do you ne-need?" Weirdly enough, he stutters when speaking with me. Did I do something wrong? Maybe it's just my imagination.

"I want a room."

"Ce-certainly, what type of room do you want?"

"Just a decent single bed."

"That wi-will be will be ten coppers."

I grab exactly ten copper coins from my pouch and place it on the bar. In exchange, he passes me the key.

"Here's your key, room 203, second floor."

"Thanks." I took the key and went to room 203.

Reaching the room, I place my backpack and other stuff in the cabinet before sitting on a chair with a desk. I then plot my path to the capital of Xadryae, Eylorriel. If the map is accurate, the distance will be 500 kilometers before reaching Eylorriel. After finishing planning for the journey, I retreated to the bed.

The next early morning, I went back to my bike to drive most of my journey. As I maintain my speed of 120 km/h, I would reach the capital in four hours.

'Wow, this city is huge.' I thought to myself while scouting the city from afar with binoculars.

Security is too tight, with fully equipped guards checking who passes through the gate. Entering won't be a problem with the doc.u.ments I have. But, exiting with the spies will be a dilemma all in itself. Not including the fact I have to search for them. OK, here goes nothing.

Ten minutes in the line, I manage to reach the gate's checkpoint, leaving my bike hidden in a secluded forest. Now that I can take a good look at them, the guards have spears in hand and swords sheathed beside their waste.

"Paper's." The guard asks while opening his hand.

"Here." I passed him the forge doc.u.ments. I hope this works.

After five long seconds of nervousness, he casually returned my doc.u.ment and let me pass. I breathe a sigh of relief as I enter the town safely.

'I should thank Philip and the people who made this.' firmly holding onto my paper.

First things first, before I could look for them, I need a place for my base of operation.

Second, I need to gain the whereabouts of the spies. The problem is that I don't have a single clue on where they might be hiding other than they can't escape the city due to the heightened security.

Lastly, if I do manage to locate them, escaping from the city will be a hard task. If I reach my bike, it will be almost impossible for them to capture us.

Let's save some spies.
