Red Wings

Chapter 1 - Dying

"Hehe yes, I've got it!" I finally grabbed that mosquito right out of the air, it was buzzing around my head for the last 15 minutes. They always come to me and sting the most annoying places. Like last night, I almost fell asleep and at that moment one stung the tip of my nose, so it took ages before I finally fell asleep.

But enough of my ranting, I need to get going. I'm properly dressed, I even put on my good looking red boxer, I smell good, and my hair… well my hair is never great, but I need to put on my helmet because I drive a motorbike anyway, so all is well.

Well, I need to go and pick up my date. So, I put on my jacket and helmet and went on my way.

The weather was lovely, the temperature was mild, the sun was setting right in front of me and everything put me in a great mood.

I haven't been in a good mood these last weeks, it's like everything turned gray and lost purpose. But then she came… the only way I can describe her is that she's the only color in this gray world.

While I was daydreaming about her I saw a crow flying next to me, and as I looked at it I fell a fear boiling up in me. I didn't even think about the fact that I was going 120km/h on the highway.

It flew up to the sky and only after it left my view did I calm down enough to feel the sweat on my forehead, the shaking of my hands and the unhealthy hard beating of my heart.

I took a deep breath and calmed myself down.

"Holy f*ck, I don't know when I became such a scaredy cat haha"

I just nervously laughed it off, cause what else could I have done?

So I continued on my way to get my date. I opened the throttle some more to distract my mind of my previous encounter and I soon fell back in my good mood and my daydreaming.

"Hehehe soon she'll hop on back and put her arms around me, you never stop to make me happy"

I petted my bike, cause I like to talk to things like they have feelings. I am a bit of a weirdo, but that makes life the tiniest bit more fun.

Or maybe I should say that I was a bit of a weirdo, cause this was the moment everything took a turn for the worse.

Or the truck I was overtaking took a turn, towards me. I steered away from it, and opened the throttle full.

I speed up, I almost overtook him, but he hit my back wheel. My back wheel got stuck between the truck and the guardrail and my bike stopped. The problem was that I didn't stop yet, I flew forward, I cursed my luck and hit the ground.

And now I'm in the now, floating in a white space recalling my last moments.

Normally my dreams are more exciting, till the point where I have godlike powers. But now nothing happened, so I had time to recall what happened before the white space. In hindsight, I'd have preferred a dream with godlike powers… or one with my date hehe.

I wonder what kind of dream this is, cause my mind is unusually clear. Maybe it's a sedative, or I'm in a coma. Being in a coma would be a bummer, maybe I'll wake up as an old man. Then I'll be gray and wrinkly in that gray world, I doubt I'll find another person like her then.

At least it's white here, so it's a little different. But it's terribly harsh on my eyes, I wished it looked like space though, a beautiful dark blue that's almost black with stars scattered all around me.

And *poof* it suddenly looked exactly like I imagined it to look. Well, there was no poof, there wasn't any sound effect at all. But it's still amazing to look at.

As I was floating I saw something black in the corner of my eye, my hands started shaking, my forehead started sweating and my heart started beating like crazy.

I felt this before, it was that crow. But why would she be her? Is she the God of Nightmares or something?

"Some people say I am." I heard a creaking voice behind me, I turned around.

There was a woman, she had a white skin, it was an unhealthy grayish white. Her hair was a deep black, it was even darker than the void of space behind her. Her coat was just as black, but more shiny. It was made of overlaying feathers, it seemed really eerie. The only thing I could see were her hands, legs and feet. Her nails and lips were black.

But the most noticeable about her are her eyes, what should be white is a deep blue and what should be her iris and pupil looks like I could see right through her. I can see a universe in her eyes.

When I look into her eyes my fear keeps boiling up more and more.

"Oh sorry, I forgot." The blue in her eyes turned the same white as her skin and her galaxy black turned a normal black. "How's this?"

My fear subsided to a level where I could think. And I asked the thing that was bugging me the most.

"You are that crow, right?"

"Yes, although you may call me Morrigan. Can you tell me your name?"

"Well, Morrigan. My name is…" Wait, what is my name? Come on.. me, you can do it, just finish the sentence naturally. "My name is... I don't know, I cannot think of my name. It's like grasping smoke, but in my head. How can this be?"

"It's because you're dead, I'm sorry to tell you this, but this is the fastest way to get you to realize this."
