Redeeming The Sins Of Xu Rouguang [BL]

Chapter 17 - Was He Ever Happy?

The night had grown so dark, but it was nothing darker than the look in Xu Rouguang's eyes. They were on their way back home from the funeral after getting kicked out by the Duan family. He had no sour regards to the family; he was more disappointed in himself for forgetting. Who in the right mind would sacrifice their own memories to continue living? What did he do for things to end up this way?

Director Cheng kept on glancing at the man in the backseat. Xu Rouguang had never spoken ever since they got in the car. He must be very upset, but wasn't it too much for a general? General Xu was known to be a beast rather than a sentient human, but seeing him like this somewhat made Director Cheng uncomfortable. He then eyed at Lai Mingjie who was sleeping on the passenger seat. It was surprising how Lai Mingjie could sleep while the person he loathed the most was just behind him. In fact, it must be connected to what they had talked about that Saturday morning.

Like before, he dropped off the two at Lai Mingjie's place. Xu Rouguang only had a few clothes with him. He had left most of his belongings in the Duan mansion and might not even think of taking them anymore. His belongings were all from Duan Sheng, and taking it with him would make the Duan family a lot bitterer.

The lights turned on as soon as Lai Mingjie walked in. Xu Rouguang only looked up to see the lights which detected movement and noticed how they stayed on even though he wasn't moving at all. Lai Mingjie turned to his direction and frowned at his unmoving image. "Xu Rouguang, what's taking you so long? Come here."

"Will I be staying in a guest room, Jie?" Xu Rouguang hummed as his feet had the energy to move. The day had been too long, but he had no idea that he could just turn himself off for now. The less he knew how to regain his memories, the more he felt messy inside. His head was already hurting, but he didn't want any pain to show on his face.

"Of course. Why? Do you want to sleep with me?" Lai Mingjie casually tossed the question before realizing what it could have meant. He only grumbled as it was not the right time to think about such things. Xu Rouguang only pushed a smile out of his lips. "Can I?"

"Oh... okay." The demon king only shrugged his shoulders, opening the door to his bedroom. He entered the room and didn't even bother closing the door behind him. "Don't get any stupid ideas. I have weak arms, but I'll still hit you."

"Thank you." Xu Rouguang walked in and took in the scent in the room. It was cool and comfortable; even the stuff in the room was easy on the eyes.

The room was certainly of a grown man as there were no trashes all over. It needed minimal clearing to look well-attended. The cabinets, the shelves, and the sills were clear from dust while the floor was also sparkling clean as well. His eyes were attracted to that full-length mirror at the side, thinking about the wonders it had already seen. Would Lai Mingjie mind if he touched it?

His hand reached out, and his fingertips pressed gently against the mirror's side. The aura of the mirror was too bland as if it had not absorbed energy from the demon king after a long while of use. Without energy, there were no visions to be spied on. For some reasons, Xu Rouguang felt a bit more disappointed.

"Jie, how long have you had... Jie?" Xu Rouguang asked without looking for him, but his silence attracted the general's attention. He looked up from the mirror and noticed that a door was next to the desk, and the light was coming out from the slits of the frame. "Oh, he wasn't here."

He walked towards the desk and put down his bag of clothes before rummaging for a new set to change into. While he was busy choosing, Lai Mingjie had already walked out of his personal bathroom. He changed into fresh clothes and was prepared to sleep for the night. "Get some good rest. You should start working tomorrow. The three-day allotment is almost up. I'll just take you with me during the burial."

Xu Rouguang only nodded loudly before taking clothes with him. He noticed a sink, and so he came back to get his toiletries. He changed into new clothes first before brushing his teeth. While doing so, he kept on staring at the tubes and capsule containers stuck on the mirror. He then left the brush in his mouth and touched the mirror.

Unlike the other mirror, the one on the bathroom was filled with negative energy. All these years, boredom and unsung despair had acc.u.mulated in the mirror that Lai Mingjie stared at the most every day. Xu Rouguang whimpered as he pulled his hand back and continued with his business. It felt like this place had never known the light of happiness.

Right, was it too much to think that Lai Mingjie was ever happy? Xu Rouguang stared at his reflection, his eyes dimming at the thought. Of course, the demon king was never happy. He was stuck in a powerless state, and he had been attacked by others for a while. The last time, he couldn't even stand against common thugs... and that encounter with Brother Blue that Xu Rouguang didn't know about.

Xu Rouguang soon finished his business and exited the bathroom. He then saw Lai Mingjie seated on his bed, hands on his phone as if he was playing a game. The demon king only glanced at him. "Took you long enough. Turn off the lights." He then brought down the phone and yawned.

The general did what was asked before staring at the bed. He then sat on the opposite edge and slowly lied down. He was trying not to take so much space even though the bed could fit three people in there. Lai Mingjie glanced at the stiff man next to him before rolling to his side and closing his eyes.

"I already asked someone to investigate the abyss. If we found out how you lost it, then we might find a way to get them back. Don't worry, you'll get them back in less than three years. I won't stop until I make that happen..."

"Three years? What happens in three years?" Xu Rouguang moved his head to look at Lai Mingjie's back. "Are you going somewhere, Jie?"

"...I'll die in three years. I'm only allowed to live a life for thirty years. I'm not helpful anymore if I fail to do it now so... we're both in a hurry, you know."

"I see. Thank you." Xu Rouguang only hummed as he closed his eyes after facing the ceiling again. "Goodnight, Jie."

Lai Mingjie rolled on his other side again and stared into Xu Rouguang's profile. The other person started drifting into sleep, but the demon king still felt awake enough not to retire. He then reached for his phone and began to fiddle with it, keeping the light away from Xu Rouguang's face. "Go on and sleep tight. I'll make you remember... then tell me what I did to make a monster like you..."
