Rise Of House Cason

Chapter 68 - New Kind of Magic

Art showed up in Professor Chip's office right after classes were over. Professor Chip smiled at Art's eagerness and started to speak.

"What do you know about the nature of language and the connection it has to do with magic?"

"You mean how spells are spoken in latin?" Art asked.

"As an example yes. Latin is the most common and widely used but there are others. Why don't we say spells on english?" he said, directing a question to Art.

Art frowned as he thought about it.

"Strength of the spell. We can say 'stun' but the spell would be weak and unstable." Art answered.

"Exactly. Strength and stability." he smiled, teaching was easy when the student was smart. "Do you know why people feared Pareseltongues so much? Beside the dark wizard thing?"

"No, I don't." Art admitted, wanting to know the answer.

"Spells in Parseltongue are stronger." Chip said with a smile. "Stronger and quicker. A split second is all it takes to decide life and death in a duel. Parseltongues hold a distinct advantage when it comes to duels."

"Makes sense. Though Parseltongue is considered the trait of a dark wizard, Parseltongues were, on average, all powerful and gifted wizards." Art said nodding his head.

"This brings me to what we will be learning for the next few days. My peoples language goes back to when we just arrived in this land. We don't know if they created it themselves or was gifted to them by something or someone." Professor Chip said with a deep voice.

Art sat up straighter, eager to learn.

"Don't get to eager. Each word takes time and patience to learn. Even our elders only know about 15 words." he said seriously, "Each word contains immense power but taxes our bodies and minds."

"It isn't something we can simply learn by reading." he said gravely. Professor Chip then stood in front of Art and opened his mouth.

Art didn't hear anything but he felt his soul shake and go numb, making him unable to defend himself. He quickly shook it off and looked at Chip in fear.

"Only a few seconds to recover, your spirit is strong."Chip said with a smile.

"What was that?" Art asked in fear.

"A simple word that you will be learning." Chip smiled, "Not let's begin."

The rest of the class Art listened to Chip repeat the word but without soul stunning effect. The unique thing about the language was that it couldn't be written down. The written word would look like gibberish and illegible. Each word had to be passed down from person to person, from generation to generation.

By the end of the lesson, Art's head was throbbing but he was able to remember the word. Leaving the room, he held his head in pain. This was the first time he felt pain from learning a spell. It was unlike any magic that Art had ever read about and it excited him to no end.

'This magic with my own… I might stand a chance against Voldemort.' Art thought, a cold smile on his face.

"What is with that creepy smile?"

Art saw Natasha and Shelby walk out from a corridor and join him.

"You girls are everywhere." Art said, shaking his head.

"Lucky you." Shelby teased.

"What were you doing with Professor Chip?" Natasha asked,

"Learning." Art answered shortly.

Natasha glared at him but didn't respond to him.

"Have either of you finished the Transfiguration homework?" Shelby asked, trying to diffuse the tension between the two.

"Yes." "No."

Art gave a gloating smile and looked down on Natasha. "Do you need some help? Maybe I can tutor you, for a fee of course." he mocked.

Natasha's whole body was shaking with rage as she looked at Art but quickly suppressed it. "Shelby and I would appreciate it. Shall we work in the library?"

Art's expression faltered and he looked at Natasha curiously. 'What is with her today?'

Shelby smiled and nodded her head. Together they went towards the library where they found a table and took their books out. Art simply read his own book but answered any questions they had for him the best he could.

The rest of the week followed suit, Art would learn from Professor Chip different words each day then study or hang out with Shelby and Natasha, sometimes Alby would join them,

The words couldn't be written down and Art found them difficult to remember and even harder to say. He marvelled at the power of these words and hoped to study them further. The words needed now wand waving or even hand gestures. The word itself was power and each word had a different effect.

Art dove into the teachings full of energy and continued to impress Professor Chip with his talent and work ethic. He learned a total of four words but was only able to say one.

Newt came to his room, telling him that they would be leaving in two days.

Art knew that the upcoming trip would be dangerous but he couldn't control his emotions and felt excitement towards the upcoming trip. Professor Chip also heard that he was leaving.

"Don't use this magic unless you are in life and death situations. Your control is still weak and will do more harm to you than your enemies." Professor Chip said sternly.

"I know." Art scowled deeply, frustrated with his slow progress.

Chip smiled, "This is the language of magic. Don't be so hard on yourself. Your progress is commendable." he soothed.

Art nodded his head and thanked Professor Chip. He went and met up with Newt who was talking with the Headmaster.

"Headmaster Fontaine." Art greeted him.

"Ah, Art. I must say that you continue to impress me and the other teachers. Good work." he said with a bright smile.

"Thank you Headmaster. Ilvermorny indeed is rumors describe it. I believe Hogwarts could incorporate many things from this school." Art said wisely, making Fontaine smile widely.

A sudden knock on the door made them turn towards it.

"Ah yes, meet the five 7th years that will be joining you." he said, opening the door.

Five students walked in, two girls and three boys. Art only recognized one of them.

"Justin! How are you?" Art asked with a smile.

"Art?" he said confused at first but a smile soon appeared on his face. "Should have known you would be in on this."

"Of course. Who else could save your ass?"

Justin snorted but shook his hand.

The other two boys looked at Art strangely before one turned to the Headmaster.

"Headmaster, why is this 5th year joining us?" a blonde boy with green eyes asked.

"Mr. Timmermans, Mr. Cason is more than qualified." Fontaine said seriously.

"Joel shut up." Justin said with a sneer, clearly there was bad blood between them.

"Newt, Mr. Cason, meet Joel Timmermans, Rachel Ertly, Randi Grey and Earl Boom. I believe you have already met Justin." Fontaine introduced them.

"P.l.e.a.s.u.r.e to meet you, I am Artland Cason." he said with a smile.

"Call me Boomer." Earl said quickly, shaking Art's hand.

"These are the top students that Ilvermorny has to offer Newt. I hope they can assist you." Fontaine said.

Newt stood in front of them and looked at them all carefully. "I am Newt Scamander. We will be joined by five Aurors later today but let's make one thing clear. I am responsible for your lives. You will listen to everything I say without questioning me. I am not afraid to send you back to school if you do." Newt looked at them all sternly. "If I am not around you will listen to Mr. Cason. He will be second in charge."

This caused many reactions, including three of them speaking up.

"He is a 5th year!"

"He is not even from Ilvermorny!"

"Why do we have to listen to this brat!?"

Only Justin and Boomer stayed quiet, nodding their heads in agreement with Newt.

"QUIET!" Fontaine yelled. He glared at the three of them. "This isn't some field trip through the forest. People have died! People can die! Newt and Mr. Cason have had more experience in life and death situations than you."

"He is only 16 years old, how does he have more experience?" Joel asked, not willing to accept the fact.

Fontaine was about to say something but Art interrupted him.

"You're right. Let's do this then, duel me. If you can last one minute, it is my lost." Artland said, taking out his wand.

The five students were surprised, a wicked smile appeared on Justin's face as he saw Artland glare at Joel.
