Rise Of The Spatial Dragon

Chapter 37 - The quest of Keeling (3)

"Do you know what it is?" The old man asked tersely. Kedan looked at him with questioning eyes. While he knew what the man was afraid of, he feigned ignorance, shooting doubting looks at the man.

Indeed even though Kedan was fairly new in this planet, even he had heard of the story. The man who had dared to overturn dynasties and stand strong, it was a favorite pastime story by many. While some did not even believe it, it was still a good story.

Kedan had heard about it from the sailors as he was traveling.

As the story goes, a traveler such as he had set foot in one of the city states. At the time, it was really just a young state trying to find its place, and while they had 50 supers, they were barely weaned. This brave sailor could not stand the oppression of his kind and thus took up the mantle.

The story had a lot of praise for the man but the gist of the story was, the man, known as Keeling, had successfully upended a city state and successfully overturned the leadership. Under his command, man kind had risen to the pinnacle of civilization.

The telling of this story was expressly forbidden by many city states, and even in Harrow, even talking about it had dire consequences. However, the humans who lived in the slums naturally weren't very strange to crime. That was why they could talk freely and even refer to it.

It was the story that mother's told their kids before bed in hush hush tones. Whispered among children, known by all, but none too daring to try and act on it. Indeed this was the fear, that one would use the story to rally humans to rise again. To the wolf kin race's delight, it was as though Keeling had shot himself in the leg.

On his deathbed, Keeling revealed a surprise that no one expected. He had left ways and means for one who was to take over his power and unite humans once again to take power in the continent. However, to do so, one had to complete the quest of keeling.

Many powers had been frightened by these. It had to be said here that while Keeling himself was formidable, it was absolutely impossible for one to rule over a city state by just relying on their power alone. Of course this only applied for natives, since powerful beings like Kedan could easily overturn this.

Keeling had accomplished this by making use of legendary weapons and materials he had uncovered in his days as a trader and where it applied, a mercenary or a a pirate. It was said that this man's treasure trove was so massive and powerful that it could transform the fledgling human race to become the master race.

unfortunately, no one knew where it was as Keeling had locked it away behind powerful seals that were undetectable. He did not wish this falling on the wrong hands, so he took it upon himself to protect and only give this to him who was qualified.

There were no other clues given, no where left to look except for the quest he had left. Many had gone ahead and decided to take the quest, but few ever returned. This was not an easy thing to do, and in order to do it, one had to show sufficient strength, so it was reserved only for those who had awakened their abilities.

Problem was, in such a planet with mid low mana concentration, awakening an ability without some proper resources was only a dream. Hence, seeing one who had such an ability, the old man was overjoyed.

As one grew stronger, they managed to awaken other abilities and even affinities with other elements, however, their main element remains the one they had awakened first. For instance, Dane's first ability was control over space element, yet he was quite gifted in skills ans spells that did not depend on the space element, such as mind control. This did not make him automatically an expert in mind control, but rather, knowing the skills he could channel his own power.

Skills and spells really were just templates created by individuals on how to manipulate the elementary particles. They were not cast in stones, it was just a means to an end. When one got sufficiently powerful enough, they could be able to channel their power to move the elementary particles even those that weren't their primary.

To put this in perspective, when Dane was at Bamboo's power level, he could be able to manipulate rock slightly, as it was related to the space element. In the same case, Krea could be able to manipulate the wind element slightly, although at this point she still didn't know. The more powerful, the more measure of control.

When Kedan heard that story, he was inclined to believe that Dane was this Keeling fellow. As such, this was the test of verification. If Dane himself had set it up, it stood to reason that by relying on his own power, Kedan should easily pass the test. That was why he chose to display his power.

Kedan's ability was extremely coveted by many in the galaxies, those that knew of it. He had control over a law, a universal law. Having such an ability was akin to being absolute behavior in the universe. Kedan's law was the law of attraction.

From adhesive and cohesive forces, to gravitational pulls, to romance, this rule was one of the most prevalent in the world. At first, not even Kedan understood his power, and it was only until he was accepted as a faction protector did he learn the extent of his abilities. Though he was still a Grade C, he was a capable of bringing down opponents that were at Grade B, a whole Grade above them. This was no mean feat, and many were terrified of such individuals. Such was the power of ruling a law.

The skills required for his abilities had one disadvantage, they thoroughly consumed power. While he was basically invincible by mortal standards, in the galaxy, he was still a small pawn. his abilities had such a strain on his person, but to his advantage, they were undeniably powerful. They would always cause a spectacle.

To counter this, he had learned a plethora of other skills and support spells to handle life as a mortal, or as he was masquerading as one. To this effect, it would have been wiser to choose either one of these to showcase as his ability, due to the secrecy around his mission. His eye catching and extremely rare talent was bound attract some unwanted attention.

Though that would have been the prudent cause, Kedan decided against it. This was because he was in a verification quest, and he had to show his true self, all of him. It had to be him to win. Similarly, in the quest, he would receive unquestionable evidence that it really was Dane that left all this. Only then would the real message be heard.

As they ran, Kedan's sharp ears picked up the sound of ravenous wolves coming. Looking back, he , he saw a pack of them coming the way he'd dashed off from. They were like wild dogs, growling as they ran, their mouths frothing. One thing stood out about them, they were considerably bigger than than normal wolves, so much so that one stood the size of a full grown man, but each and every part of its body was proportional to the size, it was like taking a wolf and magnifying it three times. There were five of them.

"Leave them, they are lost!" This was shouted by the old man when he noticed Kedan stalling. Just as Kedan was about to turn back, the old man tackled him and pulled his to the ground.

"We need to run!" He said this with such urgency, to a point that even Kedan wondered whether this was part of the test. He decided to play along, and shooting the inn one last look, he sped away.

Suddenly, he sensed a threat. Instinctively, he jumped onto the old man and shoved him to the ground. That's when he heard the whistling, An Arrow was coming at him at top speed. When it was inches away from finding its mark, a small stone struck at it, instantly deflecting it away.

As the old man watched, 2 predators stared down at each other. They understood that they were both supers, and would they be enough to bring each other down. One was armed with a bow and arrows, the other wielded whatever rocks he could find.

For Kedan, telekinesis was the first skill he unlocked, long before he even knew what kind of power he wielded. To him, moving things with the law of attraction was as easy as bringing, and it was one of the least power consuming spells he had.

Telekinesis means being able to move stuff with your mind.

Without wasting a moment, the assailant had an arrow flying, however, it was able to evade the small stones that flew at it. Kedan realized his opponents skill. He had control over the wind element. By using the arrow tail feathers, he could actually steer the arrow to evade his attacks.

Momentarily, Kedan was actually impressed. To be able to achieve this, especially in such a low mana planet, one had t have invested all manner of resources, including time and effort to practice their grasp over the elementary particles. This showed that his opponent was well practiced in his craft, too bad he had to face Kedan.

As the arrows flew at him, Kedan controlled the law of attraction, targeting the arrow heads. In an instant, the stones were sent flying at the arrow heads like heat seeking missiles. They were unavoidable no matter what what the opponent tried.

Though he was despairing, the opponent was still sending arrow after arrow. It was as though he had found a challenge, a worthy competitor. Most times, he would have already put down even the most skilled opponents by the 3rd arrow, hence, he was elated to find someone who could challenge him so. He was sorry that he had to kill him, for he recognized true talent.

Had he to hear what Kedan had decided at that moment, he would have spat blood in hopelessness. For at that moment, as he was sending his 6th arrow, Kedan had decided that the opponent was done wasting his arrows.

Kedan didn't want to expose his true power yet, as he felt that there was more than meets the eye. He had a spatial dimension, and in one of the chambers he had a stockpile of better weapons than could be found anywhere on the planet. Still he decided to maintain a low profile while doing his task.

He couldn't deny that at the moment he was in need of a weapon, and that bow and arrows were very appealing. The idiot had packed 20 in his quiver, and he had already wasted 6. He wasn't even paying attention to his own defense, simply just shooting arrow after arrow.

As he was reaching for the next, an arrow shot out of his quiver and sank right under his opponent's mouth, penetrating his skull. The beast instantly stopped moving and fell.

Inside the inn, the situation was dire. The sailors had swords that they promptly took out to fight, but they were no match for the 5 wolves. The archer had been put in place to act as a sweeper, pick out any that tried to get away. Inside, the wolves meant business. They had come to massacre, remind these lowly humans of their power.

As the waitress watched the senseless murder, her heart ached with fear and grief. She had been raised in Harrow city, and had felt the full brunt of the racism in place, and she couldn't do a thing about it. Growing up on stories of how powerful her race was, she always experienced a sense of disconnect between what she believed to be and what her reality was.

She decided to do something about it. She had approached the Inn owner. She was among the very few humans who wielded some form of power. Seeing the little girls determination, she had taken her under her wing, slowly mentoring her.

The girl still hoped that prophecy would be fulfilled, and when she had seen Kedan's performance, she too, like the old man and so many others, they had hoped that this was an answer to their prayers.

To the sailors, the tale of the quest of keeling was just some tale they told to pass time. It had been told to the whores they slept with, and they in turn had gone and told their other johns in between pillow talk. Slowly, the story had permeated many of the place they would dock, and hence it was no wonder for them that someone with some power would actually intend to try it out.

There was still that deterrent. Many that tried it never did come back, and of those that did come back, they were so broken that they never got back to being themselves. In fact, very few had actually tried and come out unscathed, and none had succeeded. Still, the mad men willing to try it still showed up, for the treasure that awaited was quite attractive.

Too bad they had to be involved.

The man had gotten out in time, maybe, but they were f*cked!

Just as the captain was about to fall, loud booms sounded nearby. Before they could wonder what had happened, each of the wolves attacking them collapsed to the ground, each with an arrow firmly planted on their skulls.
