Ron Weasley: A Noble's Ascension

Chapter 36 - Sorting Hat

"RAVENCLAW!"

As the students turned towards the Crimson Haired boy, they failed to notice a certain Potions teacher having his spell backfire and stumbling back into the various plates of food.

Rising from the stool, Ron removed the Wizard Hat and slowly made his way to the Ravenclaw table. He didn't get cheered, a round of applause, nor heckled, his sorting received complete and utter silence.

The way in which he carried himself with, the way he walked, and his aloof attitude garnered high praise from most students. Not wanting to out themselves the Slytherin girls didn't dare look his way, in fear of blushing.

Unbeknownst to Ron but we'll within his expectations, two camps were formed in that moment.

One, where those in total awe of him, who wanted to know every single detail about him, and was made up of mostly females.

The second held those who Envied, Loathed, and Despised him, compromised of most of the male student body, two distinguish members being Draco Malfoy and Severus Snape.

"Ron! Here come sit with m- Us!"

Daphne had thought she said it in a low voice, but due to the Hall being in total silence it sounded more of a shout. Hermione who was seated next to her blushed and tried her best to not looked nervous as everyone's eyes were on them.

"Professor McGonagall, if you'd please continue with the sorting and I hope there are no more outburst."

Taking a seat in the middle of Daphne and Hermione Ron paid no more attention to the sorting. Instead he grabbed a napkin, unfolded, placed it over his l.a.p and served himself food.

"Ron, I don't think you're allowed to eat just yet. No one has started yet, I think you should stop before you get reprimanded."

"You're right, but wouldn't it be a disservice to let the food turn cold? Besides look it's Harry's turn up next."

Just like Ron had told her, Professor McGonagall called Harry's name which received a mixed reception.

"Harry Potter."

The scrawny mop headed boy nervously made his way to the hat, with everyone's attention on him.

"He's Harry Potter!"

"That's the kid that beat You-Know-Who?"

"The boy who lived! He's a Hero!"

"That kid from before looks more of a Hero than this guy..."

"Maybe all of those stories were fake? Maybe the one who actually defeated You-Know-Who was Dumbledore all along!"

Hearing all of those mocking voices Harry felt that he was at his aunt's house. Feeling the intense pressure he became scared that he'd be ostracized by the rest of the students.

As Harry's indecisiveness got him jeered by the other students, Ron instead looked over to the person nearing the distraught Harry.

"*So, he's going to help him... I guess my subtle hint failed, no worries there's going to be countless chances for me to act. Maybe I should be more straight forward next time.*"

-

> Harry Potter POV<

"*I didn't ask to be some Hero, do they think that's what I wanted? Who cares about magic! All I've ever wanted was a family...*"

-

"Harry, my boy, it's alright take a deep breath and relax."

As Harry was drowning in self doubt he felt a warm hand placed over his shoulder.

"Headmaster! I... Um..."

"it's alright Harry, everyone is a bit nervous, even I was nervous when I first came to Hogwarts!"

The students that had been mocking Harry a minute ago shut up the moment they heard Dumbledore speak. He had that power over people whenever he spoke everyone would listen, even those Slytherin's who wouldn't listen to most teachers quieted down.

"Thank you, headmaster."

With Dumbledore's reassuring words Harry took a deep breath before taking a seat with the Wizard Hat.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

-

With Harry being sorted into Gryffindor, the rest of the sorting went by rather fast. Soon after, the feast officially began, while everybody else started to get into the joyful atmosphere.

A Crimson Haired boy was completely focused on the turkey leg on his plate and the trouble he was facing, trying to eat it with utensils.

Daphne glanced at the always calm and elegant Ron, battling with his food and couldn't contain her laughter.

"Ron, what are you doing?"

Still engrossed in his fight to eat it with utensils, he ignored her and kept adding more power to his knife which just made the leg roll away on his plate.

"Is he trying to eat a whole turkey leg with eating utensils? Why doesn't he just use his han-"

As Hermione was chiming in, Ron put to much force into his knife and bent it while the turkey leg rolled off his plate.

"I hate turkey legs..."

-

As the feast was coming to an end, Dumbledore stood up behind his podium to say a few words before they were to be escorted to their Houses.

"Ahem -- just a few words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you.

"First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well. "

Dumbledore's twinkling eyes flashed in the direction of the Weasley twins.

"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors.

"Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch.

"And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death."

Most of the students broke out into whispers trying to figure out why their headmaster warned them of the third floor. Hermione and Daphne weren't the exception and asked Ron for his opinion on the matter.

" it's nothing serious."

He didn't elaborate further leaving the girls vexed.

-

After the feast, all of the first year's were to line up with their House's Prefects and head to their respective Common Room.

Ron, Daphne, and Hermione left the Great Hall with a tall blond Ravenclaw girl, named Penelope Clearwater.

"Stay close and don't wander off, we from the Ravenclaw House have our very own tower. Can anyone tell me where it's located at?"

Without missing a heartbeat almost everyone raised their hand, yet no one was hopping around like Hermione.

"Hermione, right? What's the answer?"

"On the west side, of Hogwarts and more specifically the fifth floor."

"A perfect answer! Good Job! I'm sure you'll receive heaps of points for our House."

The blond girl was roughly three years older than her, but hearing her praise Hermione couldn't hide her big smile. Throughout the way, the older girl would ask them questions which everyone jumped at the chance to prove themselves.

When they finally reached the entrance to their Common Room, Hermione had answered all of her questions correct Daphne answered when she was called upon and Ron remained silent. Penelope did call upon him several times but he simply smiled at her and continued walking, after that she stopped calling on him to answer.

Now they were standing in front of a door without a doorknob or keyhole, all it had was a bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle.

"To enter the Ravenclaw Common Room you must first answer the riddle given by the eagle. If you fail to do so, you'll have to wait until someone else answers correctly."

After that quick explanation Penelope got closer to the door, before they all heard a voice come from the eagle.

"Who makes it, has no need of it. Who buys it, has no use for it. Who uses it can neither see nor feel it. What is it?"

"Whoever gives the correct answer will get to pick their room first."

Getting to choose rooms first was something that all of them wanted because they could choose the biggest room or the one with the best view. While they were rattling their brains, a low monotone voice came from the back of the group.

"A coffin."

"Huh, wait isn't-"

"Correct."

Without saying anything else Ron entered the Common Room with Daphne while the others had gazes filled with jealousy.
