RWBY: The Phantom Of Remnant

Chapter 71 - Talking with Raven

A groan escaped Magna's lips as he groggily raised his arms to block out the light. He yawned as he slowly sat up, stretching his body as he felt oddly comfortable.

When his mind cleared up, Magna instantly froze. He was sitting inside a rugged sleeping bad made from animal hide, surrounded by blankets made from different animals.

Magna jumped out of the sleeping bag and was about to run outside when he felt a bit chilly. Looking downwards, Magna was slightly speechless as he realised he was wearing nothing but his boxers.

Just as he turned to put on his clothes, Vernal burst into his tents, yelling, "Alright newbie! Up an-"

Both Magna and Vernal froze. A few seconds passed as Vernal quickly shook off her shock, blushing as she purred, "Mama likes what she sees…"

Magna's cheeks became dusted with a light pink as he scrambled to put his clothes on. Vernal had watched the entire time, even going so far as to cop a feel every now and then, much to Magna's discomfort.

Once he was ready, Vernal grabbed him by the arm as she began dragging him out, "Luckily, you haven't over slept. However, Raven wants to talk with you about something."

She literally dragged him across the entire camp. Many different men and woman watched over the pair and grinned. Vernal wasn't embarrassed in the slightest and neither was Magna.

If it was someone Magna knew or cared about, he might be a little embarrassed but they weren't. They were a bunch of bandits and Magna honestly didn't know why he was entertaining these people by staying here.

Coming up to a large tent, Vernal stopped and dropped him to the ground as she smiled, "Well, this is Raven's tent. Just go inside because she's already expecting you."

Watching as she walked away, Magna turned back to the tent and sighed before walking in.

"Hello? Vernal said you needed me for something?" Asked Magna. He didn't drop his guard as he cautiously continued forward.

However, he couldn't help but be stunned when he saw her. She sat at a small table with a cup of what seemed to be tea in her hand. She took a small sip before motioning to sit at the chair across from her.

Seeing her wait for him to sit, Magna internally frowned before sitting at the table.

The pair sat in silence for a few seconds before a sigh came from Raven's lips as she said, "I guess introductions are in order. My name is Raven Branwen, and I'm the chief of the Branwen tribe."

She matched her gaze with Magna and waited. After almost a minute, Magna decided to play along, "Magna Opus."

Raven's eyes suddenly widened as she started choking on her tea. Magna couldn't help but panic as he walked over and started rubbing her back.

Sure, he didn't like the situation he was in but that didn't change who he was. Luckily, she settled down rather quickly as she stared at Magna and said, "Y-your parents wouldn't happen to be Emily Opus and Joshua Grey, would they?"

Since Taiyang and Qrow knew his parents, it wasn't much of a surprise that Raven knew them as well. However, he acted surprised as he cautiously questioned, "H-how do you know my parents?"

A genuine smile appeared on her face as she asked, "So they are your parents… Well, how are they? Are they still alive?"

Magna glared at her as he sternly said, "I said, how do you know my parents?"

Raven's smile became replaced by a neutral expression as she said, "I was in the team that used to work with them. Now tell me, are they still alive?"

Magna didn't speak but nodded instead. Raven unconsciously sighed in relief as a small smile appeared on her face.

"That's good to know... If you haven't realised it yet, I kidnapped you."

Magna rolled his eyes as he sarcastically said, "No? Really?"

Raven's response was the reach for her sword and press the blade against his neck, "Don't test me, boy. I'll cut you down where you stand."

Magna gave her a wicked smile as he motion to the ground with his eyes. Raven looked down and became shocked when she saw the sharp earth spike positioned just below her crotch.

"What's faster? Your blade or my mind?" Smirked Magna.

Raven was a little impressed by Magna's spunk as she slowly sheathed her blade and sat down, "Actually, that's why I kidnapped you. I noticed something… off during your battles."

A smirk found its way onto her face as she said, "Your using magic, aren't you?"

Magna's face didn't betray him as he prepared himself for this. He knew that using magic around certain people, like Ozpin or Salem's followers, would get him caught.

His face mimicked faux confusion as he tilted his head and said, "Magic? You mean, the things wizards and witches use in fairytales?"

Raven's smirk deepened, "So you deny it… I'm not an idiot, kid. When you were fighting, not once did I see you use dust."

"Maybe it's just my semblance?" Replied Magna.

Raven shook her head, "Even elemental semblances need some form of trigger, whether it be dust or the natural element."

She leaned back into her chair with a victorious smirk as she said, "Just face it, kid. I'm right."

Magna wanted nothing more than to slap that smug look off her face but he kept his emotions in check as he said, "Even if your right, what do you want from me? Why is me knowing magic so important?"

This time, Raven released a long sigh as she said, "A new recruit showed up a few weeks ago. She's able to use magic as well but her training is proving… difficult, even for me. I want you to teach her."

Now she had his attention. Hearing what she said, Magna couldn't help but think back to the spring maiden. However, the time between now and when she appeared in the series didn't match up.

She was supposed to have arrived in the tribe 10 years prior to canon but she shows up now, 3 years away from the start of the series.

Pulling himself out of thought, Magna tapped his fingers against his arm and said, "Let's say, hypothetically, I can't teach her magic. What will you do then."

There wasn't a shred of hesitation in her voice as she replied, "I will kill her and take her magic for myself. The weak die and the strong live. If she can't use her power, then I will use it in her place."

Magna felt a small chill in his neck as he sighed, "Fine, I'll teach her."

He quickly got up from his seat and started to leave. However, right before he left, he stopped at the door and without turning back, he said, "You know, Yang really misses you. Even though she doesn't know you, she misses you."

Raven's eyes widened as she reached for Magna yet all she grabbed was air as he easily slipped through her fingers and left.
