Second Chance: An Heiress Reborn

Chapter 17 - His Best Performance

Cradling the tea in her hands, Alessia looked around the room with an innocent confusion, before turning back to her Grandfather.

" Grandfather, what's going on? Why is cousin kneeling down here?" Alessia feigned ignorance, knowing quite well what would be able to send her Grandfather in a fury.

The Cargona family was very traditional and believed that the daughters in the family were to be modest, and well-guarded from the outside world. Leonardo knew about Alessia's relationship with the boy from the DeCarlo family, and while he did not totally approve, he also knew that he could trust Alessia to keep the rules of the family. What he did not anticipate was her own cousin taking what did not belong to her. His perception of his second granddaughter was absolutely shattered.

The anger became visible on his face yet again, making Caterina cower even more, and her mother wail even louder. Leo turned back to Alessia, patting her hands, unsure how to break the news but knowing that he had to. But before his mouth opened, a new guest decided to join the party.

"Nicolas! What are you doing here?"

Alessia exclaimed in surprise, as well as joy. And Nicolas played his role perfectly

That morning, bodyguards from the showed up in front of his home, effectively forcing him and his parents into a car. After driving for about an hour, he realized the direction he was going in.

They were headed for the Cargona Manor!

Unaware of the current situation, Nicolas and his parents thought that it was an intimidation tactic to force him to break up with Alessia. Quickly approaching the manor, a smug smile made its way across their faces.

The Cargona family was much more foolish then he had anticipated, if they believed that this tactic would separate him from their lovestruck heiress. If anything, it would bring them closer together.

So, the minute they were led into the family room, they began acting, not taking any time to read the room.

"Alessia, my love! Don't worry, I will never let you go."

Nicolas took a step in her direction, only to blocked by bodyguards. He made sure to look at Alessia with so much longing, that Alessia had to try very hard to hide the revulsion in her heart. Nicolas' mother began wailing at the injustice of the situation, while his father glared at Alessia's father.

"This is not the way to treat us! We are your future in laws! Even if you are against it, these kids are in love! Who are we to interfere?"

He then turned and smiled kindly at Alessia.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. Even if your family is being like this, we will always support you"

In her past life, if she had heard something like this, Alessia would have been so touched to have such supportive 'in laws'. Now, all she wanted to do is throw up at the horrible acting.

Amara stepped up, fuming.

"How dare you say such a thing! If my daughter needs support, she will receive it here! Are you trying to kidnap her or something?"

"Well. if you were a supportive mother, then we would not be in this situation, now would we?"

Nicolas' mother smirked, her meaning clear. Amara narrowed her eyes, and opened her mouth to make another remark, when Leonardo's voice reverberated through the room.

"Stop!"

Although he had long retired, his voice still held a military like authority that made all those bickering close their mouths and straighten their backs. He motioned at two guards, who grabbed hold of Nicolas and forced him onto his knees.

"Very good! You come here with an entire play in mind. Do you think I am a fool?!"

Leonardo glared down at the young man kneeling in front of him, absolutely disgusted. Although he was not a big fan of the DeCarlo family, but he thought that they were at least somewhat decent.

Nicolas' father was enraged at his son's treatment, yelling,

"Leonardo, regardless of your family status, you can't treat my son like this! Even if you do not approve of the relationship, I believe that these youngsters actually love each other."

Nicolas followed with his best performance.

"Grandfather, you may not approve of my relationship with your granddaughter, but I love her with all of my heart. I hope one day to prove it to you!"

Alessia almost rolled her eyes but managed to keep a confused look on her face. She looked up at her grandfather questioningly. He looked back at her with regretful yet determined face but said nothing. Instead he stood from where he was seated, taking the pictures from the guard that stood to his right before throwing them forcefully at the kneeling boy. The pictures scattered all over the room, one landing at Alessia's feet.

Alessia really had to commend Sammy's work. How graphic!

But no matter how impressed she was, Alessia also had to play her part.

Her already pale face turned even whiter as her trembling hand reached down to pick up the picture in front of her. Her large eyes welled up in tears, as she looked at Nicolas in disbelief.

"W-what is this? Nicolas, answer me!"

Alessia's voice quivered, as tears began to escape.

Nicolas could not say anything, his face also becoming paler by the moment as he stared at the photos scattered around the room.

How?

He looked around the room for the first time, finally understanding the situation he was in. Also kneeling, he could see Caterina in a corner looking listless, still as a stone.

In a panic, he turned to look at Alessia.

"Darling, it isn't what it looks like, I-I swear!" Nicolas stuttered through the sentence, racking his brain for an excuse, any excuse.

"What is it, then? I'm looking at the evidence!" Alessia sobbed, crystal like tears falling down her pale cheeks, before turning to look at her cousin.

"And you, why? I loved you like a sister! How could you do this, not only to me, but to our family?!"

Caterina stared aimlessly into the distance for a moment before focusing on her cousin's sorrowful face.

The seemingly genuine grief on Alessia's face created a feeling of glee within Caterina's heart. She may have been in the process of losing everything, but to see her 'beloved' cousin in such distress alleviated the pain a bit.

But seeing her man grovel at her knees, while she was being protected and comforted by her family, wasted away any satisfaction she felt. When Caterina observed her own situation, there was no way for her to even compare to Alessia. Her useless mother could only cry, while her father sat there expressionless. If she wanted to survive, she could not rely on anybody but herself.

And even if she had to die, it would not be today.

Alessia watched in interest as a strange light began to grow in Caterina's eyes.

Well, who would have thought that Caterina would still have it in her to fight?

If that is what she wanted, then Alessia would only be happy to oblige her!
