Once they got inside their temporary home, Lin Cheng returned the 12 yuan and 5 jiao in his hand to Lin Momo.

“Thank you!”

Meeting the little girl’s grateful smile, the expression on Lin Cheng’s face softened a little.

However, the very next second, Lin Cheng put on a serious face and said, “There is no next time.”

“Huh?” Lin Momo was puzzled.

Seeing this, Lin Cheng explained patiently, “I will earn the money needed for the show, you don’t have to think so much, and it is very dangerous for you to go out.”

“But….”

Lin Momo originally wanted to fight for her ‘big plan to make money’, but when she saw Lin Cheng was this serious and had such stern eyes, Lin Momo hesitated.

“Then… have you finished your work today?” Lin Momo asked Lin Cheng.

Lin Cheng: “…”

Today’s guarantee order Lin Cheng is still 4 orders short, and because he brought Lin Momo back early, he did not return to the site for today’s salary settlement.

Looking at the time, it was almost 7 o’clock in the evening1, so Lin Cheng called the delivery station directly and didn’t go back.

“Let’s go and have dinner.”

“Okay. Oh, I’m treating you today!” Lin Momo said excitedly.

Hearing this, Lin Cheng just glanced at Lin Momo calmly, and then asked, “Do you want to eat steamed buns?”

Lin Momo: “…”

It seems that the money she earned today was only enough to eat steamed buns??

——

Lin Cheng took Lin Momo to a nearby restaurant that looked cleaner than the others. On the way home, the two of them also carried two roasted sweet potatoes bought with Lin Momo’s money.

Back home, Lin Cheng and Lin Momo continued to sit on one side of the room, each doing their own thing.

Lin Cheng took his work mobile phone to plan the delivery route of 30 reserved orders tomorrow, and grabbed some additional orders in the process.

Lin Momo continued to hold her small notebook and wrote down today’s accounts with a ‘serious’ face

The ‘father and daughter’ had no communication throughout the whole process, but the whole picture was surprisingly harmonious.

… …

At night, the two still slept in their respective ‘rooms’.

After a burst of lightning and thunder in the middle of the night, it suddenly started to rain.

Lin Momo sat up suddenly, then quickly jumped out of bed.

Soon there were hurried ‘bang’ and ‘thud’ sounds.

Hearing the movement from the room outside, Lin Cheng who was sleeping inside also woke up. When he came out, he saw Lin Momo squatting in the middle of the pile of sundries, rooting around, seeming to be looking for something.

“What are you doing?” Lin Cheng asked. Seeing Lin Momo get up, Lin Cheng asked again, “Is it the thunder, were you scared?”

“No.” Lin Momo was not awakened by the thunder just now, but by a drop of water falling on her forehead.

Lin Momo pointed to the roof and said to Lin Cheng, “Our house seems to be leaking.”

The old buildings were all brick-and-tile structures, and they have been in disrepair for a long time. It was very common for water to leak from the top floor down to the first floor when it rained.

The house where Lin Momo and grandma lived was also often like this. During these times, they would find all the containers in the house that could hold water and place them under the leaks to collect water from the ceiling. Just now, Lin Momo was looking for something that could catch the fast dripping water in this house.

Hearing Lin Momo’s words, Lin Cheng looked up at the ceiling. Sure enough, water droplets had already leaked out in some places. Looking around the room, Lin Momo had already placed several things to catch water—pots and pans, everything.

‘Tink.’

Another drop of water, carrying dust and cobwebs from the ceiling, just fell into the drinking cup that Lin Momo usually filled with boiling water for him.

Lin Cheng: “…”

… …

The rain was getting heavier and heavier, and the water leakage in the house began to get worse.

It was raining heavily outside the house, and there was a light rain inside the house. The ‘inner’ half of the room inside where Lin Cheng slept had it much worse. It started to rain moderately in there, and the rainwater dripped down the wall directly.

Soon, the whole house was in a mess, and the containers Lin Momo found were not enough.

“The water leaking from the top will leak down to the floor below soon—it won’t accumulate.” Seeing Lin Cheng beside him frowning, Lin Momo comforted him.

This was a matter of personal experience.

In this regard, Lin Cheng was noncommittal.

It was impossible to sleep in this situation, and the two had no choice but to sit on the ‘outer’ room and find the only place that didn’t drip and wait for the rain to stop.

Seeing the tragic situation of the two, several barrages suddenly popped up in the already quiet livestream channel.

[Oh my god, I couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night, and it actually made me squat in this situation.]

[Lin Cheng father and daughter are too miserable.]

[I just finished working overtime, and I already felt miserable. Seeing Lin Cheng and Lin Momo, I suddenly felt that life could go on again.]

[This is TRAGIC. All caps. ]

[No wonder Lin Cheng let his daughter sleep outside, and he slept inside. He stared at the walls and ceiling for so long before—he probably guessed that the house would leak when it rained, and the inside leak was worse than the outside, so he let his daughter sleep outside.]

[The truth is out.]

[What should they do now, don’t they want to think of a way?]

[There’s nothing to do in this situation, they can only wait for the rain to stop.]

……

The sudden torrential rain did not stop until the middle of the night.

At this time, the rain outside had stopped, but inside, the house was still dripping with water.

Lin Momo sat quietly on a stool, staring at the raindrops falling from the ceiling into the already filled basin and gradually began to feel sleepy.

Lin Cheng looked down at Lin Momo, and saw that Lin Momo’s eyes had begun to sag, the upper and lower eyelids fighting together.

""

Just as Lin Cheng was considering whether to take Lin Momo out to rest in another place, he saw the girl’s head tilt, and she fell leaning to one side.

Lin Cheng hurriedly reached out to catch Lin Momo’s head before it could hit the edge of the table.

The abnormal heat radiating onto the palm of his hand made Lin Cheng realize something was wrong: Lin Momo was burning up.

Footnotes

Not sure what’s going on with the time.  Lin Momo left as soon as Lin Cheng left for work that morning. She walked for 3 hours and it was around noon when she reached the recycling station. But now it’s already evening. Maybe they delivered more in the afternoon, they just didn’t finish the quota (ᅌᴗᅌ✿)
