SHINOBI In A World Of Magic

Chapter 20 - Yohan's Combat exam (Part 1)

~A year later~

=At a stadium=

Yohan and his family, as well as Stella and her's, were arriving at the entrance of a stadium in Hakono, not so far from their house, which was the venue of the combat exam. Yohan and Stella had already past the written exam with Yohan at the top and Stella in the top 20s. Advent would not conduct it on their campus for the simple reason of it being too far. The exam would start at around 10, but participants would have to show up at least half an hour before.

"Hehehe! Watch me wipe the floor with all my opponents here!" "You better hope you're not matched up with me!" "Or what? you will admit defeat?" "Oh I'm so scared!" "Keep yapping, you won't win against me!" "Ha! I don't win, I just allow you to lose." Kids were arrogantly puffing up their c.h.e.s.t and had feelings of anticipation for the combat exam.

"Yohan it's time for you to go show you are present in taking the exam." Vivian said.

"Stella you too." Joanne urged next to them

"Good luck you two!" "Heh, they don't need luck Vincent, I'm sure they will get into elite course just like Amber here." Vincent and Jerry each said.

"Yohan, Stella, if you are matched up with Cain's little sister. Show. No. Mercy." Amber enunciated her last 3 words with a sadistic smile on her face. Yohan and Stella felt slight chills down their spine. They each nodded and strolled to the registry. Yohan had been awaiting this day to finally make his debut as a mage.

"Hey look it's Yohan!" "Well if it isn't the battle junkie." "I hope I don't have you as any of my opponents." A couple of Yohan's friends had come as well to enroll. He also saw the triplets near the front of the line waiting to register, so he waved to them while wishing them luck. They registered and got into a lobby for participants and were instructed to slip into combat suits which were similar to the one they wore in the gymnasium's arena. They each saw a large screen with names and an icon of their appearance, every participant was closely searching for their names. Yohan found two of his match ups; His first match was against a high-elf boy called Logon and the next was against a wolf-kin girl named Snow. So he decided to warm up a bit by stretching and exchanging a few light blows with his friends before the matches start. Suddenly an announcer in formal attire stood in the middle of the arena, garnering everyone's attention.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, firstly we would like to announce and warmly welcome the Wizard Crawford for spectating this and would like to present and welcome you all as well to the 215th combat exam since the establishment of Advent magic academy. However this is not all, since our school has been working closely with Nexus Tech Industries who have been kind in installing the 'Damage Conversion Field' for this year's combat exam. This would allow participants to display their prowess and potential while also ensuring that there will be no permanent physical injuries to the children taking the exam, which had been, and still is, a big concern for you parents. The matches will begin shortly so I hope you will cheer and encourage our applicants. Thank you for listening and may everyone enjoy themselves." The announcer finished and backed off the stage while there was cheering from every corner of the arena.

A 'Wizard' was a renown and respected personage in the mage community as the title would suggest that they have mastered the spells for all 5 basic elements to the Advanced level at the very least, they were very diligent mages and most of them were either 40 or older. There were also separate titles for those who have achieved Grand tier, which was 'Great Wizard', epic tier, which was 'Lord Wizard' and heroic tier, 'Arch wizard'. Everyone was clamoring over the announcement and excited for knowing they're in the presence of a wizard. The wizard was sitting in a sort of balcony overlooking a few seats.

After a few more minutes, the announcer introduced the first match. It was indeed a spectacle, when an applicant's magic struck the other, they were unharmed, but after a couple more exchanges the combatant had a slight worn out expression, proving the field's effect. The defeated could easily recover with the help of the on site medical mages. On average it took around 3-4 minutes to complete a match, since there was no fear of injury they were a little reckless.

More matches went by and he didn't see Cain's little sister. By logic she should attend this place that is if she were to attend Advent. He saw a couple of the triplet's matches, Arwen had an affinity for earth, Ayne had an affinity for wind. Their matches lasted less than 2 minutes, since defeating their opponents was easier than laying a finger on Yohan. They had been sparring with fellow aspiring mages and Yohan sort of raised the combat standard with his presence. A few of them went up and displayed notable performances.

"Interesting, some applicants here show just as much promise as those in Glave." The wizard in a red robe said while stroking his beard while the vice principal sat beside him.

"This year's applicants are the strongest over the past 30 years." The vice principal was also delighted at the results. While one can make up grades with diligent studying, battle sense needed much more than just 'hard work'. After a few more matches it was finally Yohan's turn.

"Next Combat examination, Logon Fulmen, age 11 affinity: lightning against Yohan Uchiha, age 11 Afinity:....none..." The whole venue went silent, even Yohan's fellow classmates were shocked. Yohan had to get an official reading to be used like a doc.u.ment in his application.

'What? He has no affinities? Then how could he use Earth and Water magic?' These were their first thoughts, even his family and Stella's parents were just as dumbfounded but they came to a revelation that was far from reality. 'He worked extremely hard just to learn those types of magic?'

"Haha! This is going to be a piece of cake. Hey you, why not just admit defeat, it would be less of an embarrassment for you." Logon loudly taunted when he got in the arena. He had ornate gauntlet on both his hands.

"Well I for one can't wait to see your face when you finally realize you were defeated by me." Yohan revealed a slight grin. His hand reached towards his back and like 'magic' he slowly pulled out a weapon larger than his whole being. Everyone looked in disbelief, even the Wizard was stunned, the venue became quiet again. "Ahem," Yohan broke the silence, the announcer snapped out of his stupor and continued.

"The match will commence in 3...2...1... begin!" The match was underway, Logons wielded lightning between his two hands, but he didn't see Yohan. Yohan had disappeared and appeared behind Logon, holding his war fan above his shoulder. Logon turned his head seeing the absurd weapon appearing in front of him.

"If I struck you, I could've easily taken you out." Yohan had a playful smile plastered on his face. Logon, gritting his teeth, dashed forward and turning his whole body discharged some sparks of lightning towards his foe. Yohan leisurely held his weapon in front of him and the lightning dissipated. Yohan conjured some masses of water and directed it towards Logon.

'How can he use elemental magic? It's hard to train elemental magic when you don't have an affinity for it but, it's like his affinity is water' Logon thought as he dodged wave after wave of magic but, made sure to keep his focus on Yohan's position all the same. Logon needed to get closer to make sure his magic connected since the effective range of his magic was quite small. So he made a break for Yohan, however Yohan looked like he was starting to float.

Yohan was flying! Everyone looked at him in mid-air. 'What in blazes was going on?' Everyone had the same thought, Logon regretted taunting Yohan, now it looked like he could never beat him. However, that must be a draining magic so he planned to start a war of attrition. Unfortunately for him, Yohan's mana pool has reached the mid-kage level.

"What splendid control over wind magic." The vice principal looked pleased with Yohan.

"That is not wind magic. I sense the attribute of the mana surrounding him.... is earth." The wizard corrected. The vice principal was shocked, including some spectators who heard them were stunned at the fact.

'Who is this kid? What the heck did he do to gain such magic?' This was what everyone thought. However, the Wizard was more stunned since Yohan could wield elemental magic better than other kids his age with the actual affinity for them, it would be no exaggeration that his magic was better than most kids 2 years older than him. His interest in Yohan grew.

"Come down if you dare coward!" Logon became a bit impatient and taunted as he dodged Yohan's barrage of water magic, thinking Yohan's mana must have drained a lot. Instantly Yohan turned into a blur and stood provocatively in front of Logon.

"Oh I dare." Yohan said with a ridiculing smile. Logon's anger burst as a visible vein popped. He coated his right gauntlet with lightning and swung it towards Yohan. Contrary to everyone's expectations Yohan just raised his absurdly large war fan. After a clash, the bright blue glow of lightning slowly faded and finally disappeared, the crackling sound no longer audible. Everyone saw Yohan's fan glowed as they finally heard a voice breaking the silence.

"Uchiha Gaeshi"
