Since 1981 Health School

Vol 4 Chapter 745: Someone has an idea

 Capital, Sanyao Hospital.

This is a very awesome hospital, and its awesomeness is not only reflected in its medical technology, but also in its level.

Sanyao’s superior department is not the Ministry of Health, but a higher-level and more powerful department that also receives very special patients.

So in the Chinese medical community, Sanyao is a transcendent existence, and all parties must give it some respect.

In the 1980s and 1990s, there were generally four best plastic surgery hospitals in China: Shanghai No. 9 Hospital, Peking University No. 3 Hospital, Nanfang Hospital, and Sanyao Hospital.

Vietnam Hospital is a sudden rise, and it only focused on the treatment of cleft lip and palate before. It has only recently begun to develop all-round plastic surgery projects.

So even though Chen Qi of Yuezhong Hospital is very famous, the plastic surgery department of Yuezhong Hospital is really not taken seriously by the domestic medical circles and is not ranked high.

The first thing that really caused a stir in the Plastic Surgery Department of Vietnam Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital was the huge donation of HK$400 million from the Xiangjiang Ke family, which absolutely shocked all the directors across the country.

But because Xiangjiang patients were first treated by the burn surgery department, and then the plastic surgery department was taken over by people, they were somewhat ignored. In fact, 200 million was earned by plastic surgery.

(Many hospitals in later generations merged these two departments to form a "Department of Repair, Reconstruction and Burns and Plastic Surgery")

The second time that the Plastic Surgery Department of Vietnam-China Hospital caused a national sensation was the successful corrective surgery on a patient with “true hermaphroditism”.

This matter is considered gossip in other hospitals and can be discussed after dinner, but for the plastic surgery community, this is definitely big news.

Even doctors in these top hospitals have almost never encountered patients with true hermaphroditism.

Even if individual doctors have encountered it before, patients often deny it or flee secretly in order to protect their privacy. It is absolutely impossible to stay for treatment.

Besides, even if the patient is left alive by the doctor, you, the plastic surgeon, must be able to perform surgery. Not everyone is as proficient in all surgeries as Chen Qi, with incredible skills.

Because of all the above, "true intersex malformation" is rarely found in China, at least so far, no academic paper has been published.

It didn’t exist before, but it exists now, so this is a great treasure.

Liu Chunjiao is the only case in the world with two complete functions, which is a big gold mine.

Because you can apply for a project, even if the funding for a project is hundreds of thousands of yuan, it is still a huge sum of money for doctors in 1990. It is enough to be popular and drink spicy food. This is a benefit.

Another one is fame. Whoever becomes the first person in the country to treat hermaphroditism will become famous.

For Meng Yushu, the vice president of Sanyao, a top scientific research project may be the final stepping stone for him to be elected as a "faculty member".

Due to some special reasons, the co-optation of academic members (formerly known as "Academicians") after the founding of the People's Republic of China has always been stop-and-start and extremely irregular.

This has resulted in a large number of scientific researchers who have not been elected as “faculty members”, which symbolizes the highest academic status, during their lifetimes, and there is a serious talent gap.

It was not until May 1979 that the recruitment of members of the academic department was carried out, and then there was a break for ten years.

It was not until 1990 that the country started to co-opt academic faculty members again. There were only 50 seats, but there were hundreds of thousands of senior intellectuals across the country, from all walks of life and in various units with professional titles above senior level.

So many people are vying for 50 places, which shows the value of the members of the academic department.

Not only are there a small number of overall committee members, but there are also restrictions on academic department members in the same discipline. For example, for the same discipline, there is often one quota for the theoretical-focused Academy of Sciences and one quota for the practical-focused Academy of Engineering.

Although the division was not so detailed in 1990, this time the department members were co-opted. Because there was no academic member for plastic surgery, a quota was specially set up for plastic surgery.

 This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

In other words, so many doctors engaged in plastic surgery across the country have to compete for a spot.

The most qualified among them are Professor Meng Yushu from Sanyao University, Professor Ge Minghua from Peking University Third Hospital, Professor Fang Bing from Shanghai Ninth Hospital, Professor Cao Lichun from Nanfang Hospital, etc.

Among them, Meng Yushu’s strongest opponent should be Professor Ge Minghua from the Third Hospital of Peking University, because Professor Ge Minghua is the chairman of the Cleft Lip and Palate Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance of the Chinese Medical Association and is very famous in the country for maxillofacial plastic surgery.

Of course, everyone has overlooked that there is also a director of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) in Vietnam-China Hospital, Chen Qi.

But the academic environment in China is very funny.

No matter how awesome you are abroad or how great your influence is, it is of no use at home. If the country does not recognize you, are you angry?

It’s equivalent to winning an Olympic gold medal. What’s important in China is the National Games gold medal.

Just like Grandma Tu, she won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. She is the first person in the domestic medical field, but she ran for the election 4 times and was not elected as an "Academician" in the end.

Why?

There are many reasons. One of them is that artemisinin is a team achievement and cannot be regarded as an individual achievement, so it is not Tu Youyou’s credit. Another reason is that Tu Youyou is too old.

(Ironically, among the valid candidates for the 2023 election of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the eldest candidate is 77 years old, a total of 2. Among the valid candidates for the election of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the eldest candidate is 68 years old. 4 people.)

In fact, to put it bluntly, there are many candidates for academician election. Just like hand surgery is dominated by Yuan's hand surgery, academicians can only come from the disciples of Yuan's hand surgery.

There are also rules for the nomination of academicians, including Chapter 3 "Nominating and Determining Candidates", Article 7: Academicians and national academic groups can nominate candidates, and individual applications will not be accepted.     Okay, the difficulty lies here. Either you are very popular and several academicians nominate you, or you are nominated by a national medical association.

No one nominates you, no matter how good you are, it will be in vain. If you want to stand for election, you must be recognized by others.

As for whether others recognize you or not, it all depends on how popular you are? Can it provide benefits to others? Are you from the same gang as me?

It's that simple.

The situation of Chen Qi and Tu Youyou is somewhat similar.

Tu Youyou's team discovered artemisinin in the 1980s. After so many years, everyone has retired, so what connections do they still have in the academic circle?

Chen Qi has had almost no contact with the domestic medical community since he started working. He even had a fight with the National Society of Hand Surgery and has never joined any domestic academic organization.

At the beginning, the Gastroenterology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association wanted to recruit Chen Qi and Lan Lijuan to join the domestic medical association after they were elected as directors and members of WGO.

In the end, due to the opposition of some people, the matter was dropped.

So Chen Qi's popularity in the domestic medical community is not that good. Even though he is a director of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, no one nominated him as a candidate for the academic committee.

(Actually, even if someone nominates Chen Qi, opponents will definitely point to his age)

Sanyao Hospital, in the office of the vice president.

A group of people in white coats were having a meeting. Meng Yushu sat behind the desk and kept reading the topics published in this year’s new newspaper for hospital employees.

Meng Yushu is in urgent need of topics, especially weighty topics, so the best way is to choose from the topics reported by doctors. This is the fastest, most direct and most effective method.

Any project that is favored by Vice President Meng Yushu belongs to him, and he is so domineering.

Of course, the final project still has to be done by the doctor below. He only needs to be named as the first author by the vice president.

But after reading for a long time, Meng Yushu didn’t see a satisfactory topic:

"No, no, no, these projects are either not innovative, not sensational, or the cycle is too long. None of these meet my standards. What should I do? I will be participating in the evaluation in the second half of the year, and the projects I have now are not enough to recommend I’ll be a member of the school department.”

Next to him, Director Wang Gang of the Medical Department was also looking through the catalog:

“Dean Meng, don’t be anxious, don’t be anxious, good topics are rare. Let’s think of other ways.”

“What I need is a topic that is groundbreaking, sensational, and preferably unique. Do you understand? What’s the point of this plastic surgery and that correction?”

At this time, Yao Wenrong, director of the Science and Education Department, made a suggestion:

“Dean Meng, I read in the newspaper a few days ago that the Vietnam Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine performed the first true hermaphroditism operation and helped a female patient remove her male organ. What do you think of this topic?”

Wang Gang nodded: "Yes, I've heard about this too."

Meng Yushu sighed:

“It’s a pity that we found out too late. Otherwise, if I had to perform this surgery and take the lead on this topic, then my selection this year would definitely be stable, and there would be no way Lao Ge could catch up with me.”

Yao Wenrong said mysteriously:

"It's not too late. I've obviously heard that the Yuezhong Hospital has just admitted another patient with true hermaphroditism. And the most exaggerated thing is, do you know what? This patient has both male and female functions. It is said that the patient has both male and female functions. Live a child, but still live a XX life as a man and a lesbian."

 “What?~~~”

All the people in white coats in the office were stunned. They were all top doctors from top hospitals, so they would not be stunned easily.

Vice Dean Meng Yushu was also dumbfounded:

“Is it true or false? Even if we look at the world, although it is true that hermaphroditism has two sets of organs, male and female, we have never heard that these two sets of organs can function independently. Is this possible?”

Yao Wenrong chuckled: "It's impossible. Anyway, it's all coming from Yuezhong Hospital. I don't know whether it's true or not."

At this time Wang Gang had an idea:

"Dean Meng, we can call the Yuezhong Hospital to ask. If this is really the case, then this subject will definitely cause a sensation all over the world. If you have this patient in your hands, the subject will not be in your hands anymore. Look, isn’t this innovative topic coming?”

Meng Yushu’s eyes brightened when he heard:

“Yes, although the operation is difficult, it doesn’t seem to be that huge. Unfortunately, the patient is now in the Vietnam Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and we are beyond our reach in Haidong Province.”

Wang Gang chuckled:

“Isn’t this simple? It’s a local hospital. Let’s make an announcement and ask them to transfer their patients to us. At most, we can just give them a few training places.”

Meng Yushu raised his eyes and asked, "Is this okay?"

Yao Wenrong laughed: "It's their honor to cooperate with our Sanyao Hospital. If you don't agree? I'm afraid they will beg us to accept this project." (End of Chapter)
