After resting for two days, Cheng Jin returned to work at the Public Security Bureau, and his colleagues surrounded him to ask about the specific process of solving the case. He told them about what happened. In fact, he felt that Liao Shixin's suicide note on the Internet had made it clear enough.

Ye Lai asked him, "Team Cheng, do you know who drove the taxi that Liao Shixin's parents were in when the accident happened?"

(kiwii: in case you forgot, Ye Lai is the Ye Zi that was introduced in ch3 as a beautiful and capable policewoman.)

Cheng Jin really didn't know this after Liao Shixin's death; he rested at home for two days, didn't pay attention to these details, and no one told him about it. "Why? What's the latest news?"

Ye Lai said: "Someone announced on the Internet that the driver who died on the spot in the car accident was the driver of the long-distance bus case in Zhenping City three years ago."

The Zhenping long-distance bus case was a sensation three years ago.

This is a rape case. On a long-distance sleeper bus bound for Zhenping City, a man raped a girl, and no one in the bus stopped or tried to stop it. The girl's family later took everyone on that bus to court.

The court's decision was that those people do not need to bear the legal responsibility. Because the law is only the lowest moral bottom line, it is not a crime to act bravely against justice—at least not a legal crime yet.

Wu Jian said: "After that incident, the driver was fired by the long-distance bus company. Unexpectedly, he came out as a taxi driver. Now he died in a car accident, and the incident from three years ago was dug up. Many people online are saying that he deserved it and saying that it’s good that he died and that he hurt innocent people…"

Cheng Jin sighed. Life is full of natural and man-made disasters; no one knows whether their life will suddenly turn a corner in the next step. The worst thing is that people like this driver hide during their lives and have no peace after death.

Ye Lai asked, "Why do so many people sympathise with Liao Sixin while that driver deserves to die?"

Cheng Jin thought for a while and said, "This case is just a story to the bystanders on the Internet. In the story, Liao Shixin is a poor man, a top student in the medical school; his parents died, and his teachers and classmates made trouble... People always sympathise with the weak, but if he is completely weak, then everyone will be sad and angry. But he took revenge, and the most important point is that he committed suicide. His death added more tragedy to the story and downplayed the crimes he committed."

Lao Zhang was speechless: "But in fact, he killed three people! Although one of them was not directly killed by him."

"It's always easier to accuse others." Ye Lai sighed, "But... I also think that the people on the bus are disgusting; no one stood to help that weak girl!"

"Their actions are hateful, but the culprit is the rapist." Cheng Jin reminded her.

The rapist got off the bus halfway, and the other passengers said they didn't know him, and the police never caught him.

Everyone lamented the injustice of the heavens, and Ye Lai suddenly thought, "Maybe the rapist died long ago?"

Everyone agreed that this is very possible…

At this time the phone rang, and Ye Lai went to answer it, and then she called Cheng Jin: "Captain Cheng, the director is looking for you."

After Cheng Jin arrived at the director's office, he saw Bu Huan and Wei Qing again.

Bu Huan smiled ambiguously and said, "Xiao Yang didn't know we were coming here, so he didn't come."

Cheng Jin smiled and said, "Of course, you can do this kind of errand."

Bu Huan put on a wry smile: "You're really welcome…"

Director Zeng looked at them with a smile. It seemed that Cheng Jin and them got along pretty well: "Cheng Jin, they said that the drug poisoning case was solved thanks to your help. Well done!" He patted Cheng Jin on the shoulder with the expression "I'm proud of you".

Cheng Jin shook his head and smiled: "Director, this is a polite remark; don't take it seriously."

"No, thanks to your help, we were able to solve this case in one day." Wei Qing still looked serious. "I have something to ask for your help with this time."

Cheng Jin restrained his smile: "What's the matter?"

Could there be a follow-up to this drug poisoning case? No, it shouldn't be. But looking at Wei Qing's appearance, it may still be relevant.

"Is it convenient for you to come with us? The materials are all on our side." Wei Qing asked the director again: "Director Zeng, we need to borrow Cheng Jin again. Is it convenient for you?"

Director Zeng narrowed his eyes. This person would actually politely ask for his opinion; his attitude was very tough yesterday. "No problem. But I want to ask, is it something very dangerous?"

Bu Huan answered with a smile: "It's not dangerous. Others will do dangerous things. We just want to borrow his brain. Some of his ideas are very helpful to us."

"Oh!" The old man was relieved, waved his hand, and let them go.

Cheng Jin came again to the big office where he had been two days ago.

People here were still busy working. Yang Simi was not here, so he wondered if there was any mission. Han Bin nodded when he saw him. You Duo and Xiao An walked over together, and You Duo handed him a stack of papers: "Look at this; Xiao An found it."

Cheng Jin flipped through it. It was a stack of resumes, male and female, old and young, about thirty or forty. "What's this?"

Wei Qing had already left, but Bu Huan was still standing beside him and said with a smile, "Guess what? In the past two days, Xiao An has told a lot about your glorious deeds."

Cheng Jin looked at Xiao An with puzzled eyes.

Xiao An glared at Bu Huan and made a face at him, saying, "Brother Cheng is better than you anyway." Then she smiled at Cheng Jin, "Brother Cheng, I read on the Internet that you have solved many difficult cases, and you are the youngest criminal police captain!"

Cheng Jin said indifferently, "There will be no record of my crime detection on the Internet. Do you have the authority to view the information of the Ministry of Public Security?"

Xiao An felt that Cheng Jin seemed to be angry; she timidly looked at You Duo and Bu Huan next to her.

Bu Huan interjected with a smile: "We only had this authority recently. Recently, the Ministry of Security and the Ministry of Public Security have cooperated closely."

Cheng Jin didn't say anything and looked down at the documents in his hand. "Most of these people are from Zhenping City. It seems that the death of the taxi driver really caused something. My colleague was still talking to me about this driver in the morning. Xiao An, what's going on with these people?"

Xiao An was relieved when she heard him ask herself: he doesn't seem to be angry with herself anymore. She immediately replied: "The day before yesterday, when I saw that the driver was related to a rape case on the Internet, I was curious to investigate that case— I had never heard of it before."

"That case was disgusting, and I was so pissed off... Because the driver was dead, I went to check the status of other people and found that many people were dead— excluding the victim, there were a total of 35 people; counting the driver, 17 people have died."

Cheng Jin said, "Are they all abnormal deaths?"

"Five people died of illness, and 12 people died of various accidents. This can't be retribution, can it?"

"I'm afraid it's not heavenly retribution." It's human retribution. Cheng Jin asked, "Where is the victim from back then?"

"I didn't find it. After that incident, the whole family moved away from Zhenping, and their whereabouts are unknown."

"Have you checked their bank accounts?"

"Not yet."

"Then investigate quickly. Has the truck that caused the death of the taxi driver been found?"

"I found it, but unfortunately the truck was empty. The truck was stolen a week before the accident. The owner reported it to the police, but it was never found."

Cheng Jin frowned: "Using a stolen truck to cause a car accident is a murder routine. This gives me the feeling that someone is staging revenge again."

"Do you have any suggestions?" Xie Ming walked into the hall.

"Team Xie." Cheng Jin saw Yang Simi following Xie Ming on the right, and he smiled at him unconsciously. After realising it, he immediately restrained his smile and looked at Xie Ming, saying, "I don't believe this many coincidences are overlapping together. The victim in the bus at that time— the girl you must have been looking for—there are also 18 people on that long distance bus who are still alive beside the victim; you should have found them, right? The murderer will go to these people; just keep an eye on them, and you'll be able to find the murderer." He felt that he was not needed here this time and didn't know why they were looking for him.

Xie Ming frowned and said, "The case must be solved as soon as possible. The driver left Zhenping City and came here because he couldn't stand the pressure of public opinion. No one except his wife knew that he was the driver in that case. But now that this matter has been reported on the Internet, this is likely to be done by the murderer, and we cannot allow him to continue spreading this negative information on the Internet."

Cheng Jin looked at Xiao An and said, "Did you find out where the computer sent this message from?"

"It's a computer in an Internet cafe. The Internet cafe is not well managed, and the camera doesn't work well. It didn't take pictures of that person, and no one remembers the person's appearance. They only know that he is an adult man."

"A man? So at least it's not the victim himself." Cheng Jin pondered: "Anyway, you'll catch him sooner or later. I don't think I can help you much."

"No, we can't catch him after he killed another person or after he said more provocative words on the Internet. You must help me find a way to find him as soon as possible." Xie Ming looked at Cheng Jin for two seconds, then clapped his hands and said to everyone, "Okay, everyone work hard!"

Everyone said in unison, "Yes!"

Cheng Jin looked at Xie Ming's leaving back and said, "It seems you're going to work overtime again; do you have overtime pay?"

"No." Bu Huan smiled at him and said, "Unfortunately, you will share weal and woe¹ with us."

Cheng Jin also smiled, "Anyway, it is my honour to work with you."

kiwii: sorry for the late update. I had my economics practical exam today. Also let me know in the comments if you require a summary for old chps. I'll do my best!
