While Lin Lan was waiting, she found a young girl with a delicate appearance and a demure temperament coming out of another room. The girl was 16 or 17 years old, styled with two braids that were fastened with red bows. She was wearing a pair of indigo blue trousers and a red plaid jacket on top of her shirt.

At this time, the girl appeared worried as she twisted the corners of her clothes with her hands, looking devastated.

Lin Lan recognized her and called out ‘Xiuyun’, but the girl was so absorbed in her own thoughts that she didn’t hear her name being called out.

Lin Lan wanted to go over but was pulled by Yang Han, “It’s your turn,” He pushed her into another consulting room and brought Xiaowang to another office to read some comic books.

Lin Lan went in to see a female doctor who seemed to be in her fifties. She greeted the doctor, took out the medical cooperation book that the County Hospital had provided her in the countryside a few years ago. She then placed it on the table and talked about her issue.

She had 5 children and no longer wanted more, so she asked if there were any contraceptive methods available.

The female doctor asked, “You don’t want to give birth anymore?”

The doctor said, “It’s fine to not want any more children. At this point, we can start to discuss family planning.”

She was the Director, so she often went to provincial areas for meetings. A few years back, she had started talking about the concept of family planning. It was mostly because they were already so busy, hence, there was no need to have that many children.

However, this was the first time someone from the countryside had asked her about contraception. She looked at the medical book and noted that the woman before her was from Shanzui Village, an ordinary rural village.

Lin Lan nodded with a smile, “What is family planning?”

The doctor glanced at her and said, “You wouldn’t understand even if I explain it, so let’s put it this way— you are still young. Therefore, you can choose to put on the birth control ring first. If you decide otherwise in the future, you can take off the ring.”

Lin Lan further expressed that she didn’t want to have any more children.

She already had 5 children to take care of. Besides, she didn’t know how to care for a newborn, especially in an era where it would be easy to contract all sorts of diseases and sickness. At that time, jaundice, baby rash, fever, diarrhea were nothing more than common. Since there were all sorts of problems that came with it, she decided that she couldn’t bear the suffering and the constant trouble.
