Struggle in the Steam Age

: The beginning of a story

The most pleasant season in Eagle Fort is summer. As the largest port city in the White Eagle Federation, the sea has well regulated the temperature of this city, making the temperature here very suitable for human survival.

Because it has been raining and sunny after many consecutive days of rain, and the fresh sea breeze during the day blows the city. The city, which was usually enveloped in black smoke from the chimneys of factories in the city, became much cleaner. Therefore, many people took this opportunity to walk or take a horse-drawn carriage to go around, and the streets became noisy.

But this kind of noise is only confined to a few prosperous roads in the city, just a slight turn to leave the main roads in the city center, everything is quiet again. Only occasionally one or two workers in crumpled woolen dark coats and woolen hats with irregular edges hurried past.

The streets below these urban areas are newly introduced from the Old World to the New World, a very fashionable new underground drainage system. Each main pipe is made of red brick hoops, allowing an adult to walk upright in it. And Liang En was lying motionless in such a sewer now.

Sniffing the sticky odor of the tip of the nose, feeling the cold sewage that soaks half of his body. As Liang En, who had only received all the memories of the original owner of the body ten minutes ago, had to accept the fact that he just went through somehow after sleeping.

"His--it's really cruel to start." Liang En felt the needle-like pain from the back of his head and cursed in his heart. Fortunately, it may be because he has the soul in his body again, and he can feel that he is facing this. Physical control is slowly returning.

A few minutes later, Liang En tried his best to get up. After that, he straightened up and leaned against the wall of the sewer and gasped for breath. This action made him almost exhausted his energy.

"Why are you so weak? Don't get sick!" Liang En was secretly worried in his heart. Now that he can pick up his life and come back is indeed a survivor, but because of the sequelae left behind, it is really miserable. In particular, he found from the memory of Lawrence that the development of the medical level in this era he was in was not optimistic.

This is a world similar to that after the outbreak of the first industrial revolution, except that it is different from his hometown in that there are real supernatural forces in this world. It is a world where magic and trains, dragons and differential engines coexist.

Half a century ago, the blazing flames in the steam engine boiler ignited the dawn of the industrial age, but the supernatural powers still exist around people as they did in the previous decades.

The magician who pursues all kinds of new knowledge, the druid who tries to maintain the balance of industrial development and nature, uses enchanting bullets and alchemy potions to destroy evil demon hunters, even those goblins and kobolds who are still wandering in the wild. The extraordinaryness of this world has not disappeared because of the rise of industry.

However, although there are extraordinary powers in this world that can achieve life and death, only a few people can enjoy such treatment. When most people get sick, apart from being hard-handed, the only thing they can have is the kind of medical services that can be cured by certain healers who don’t know whether they have received professional training. This is why he is so worried.

Fortunately, after breathing for a while, he found that his physical fitness was slowly recovering, so he simply leaned on the dirty wall and used this time to sort out the memories he had just received.

From this memory, Liang En learned that his physical name is Lawrence August, the adopted son of a priest of the Church of Knowledge in a small town west of the White Eagle Federation with only more than 1,200 people.

In such a big era, Lawrence is lucky as the adopted son of the clergy. Although his adoptive father is not good at expressing himself, he spends most of his time on official business or conducting various weird experiments. But at least education provided him with benefits that most people in this era cannot enjoy.

So four years ago, Lawrence was admitted to one of the best universities in the White Eagle Federation: Far Harbor University in Eagle Fort by virtue of the letter of introduction from his adoptive father from the priest of the diocese and his excellent grades.

After four years of study, Lawrence finally got a bachelor of medicine degree with excellent results. He had planned to buy something interesting and mail it back as a gift. As a result, when choosing souvenirs for her adoptive father and her friends, she accidentally found a copper mirror in an oriental style that fits my eyes in a second-hand store.

After a lot of words, Lawrence bought the mirror at a reasonable price and prepared to give it to his childhood playmate who was in a girls’ school in the Old World, but what he did not expect was that this caused him to suffer misfortune:

Probably because the bulging purse that was taken out when paying the money attracted prying eyes. As a result, someone got a stick on the head after shopping and returning to the rented room. When I opened my eyes again, it was inside my body. Liang En, the man who occupied the magpie's nest.

Recalling this, Liang En felt that part of his body had recovered. So he tried to stand up against the sticky wall, and after standing firm, he leaned against the wall and followed the guidance of the light to under a manhole cover a few meters away. Then, step by step, he slowly climbed onto the ground along the iron ladder for maintenance.

"Thank you for stealing the manhole cover, otherwise I might not be in a good state now." Liang En mumbled after climbing out of the sewer, and then he stepped on the muddy gravel and followed his memory towards renting. Walk to the house.

As a clergyman serving the God of Knowledge, Lawrence’s adoptive father invested most of his own allowance in the school attached to the experimental and subsidy church. UU Reading www. uukahnshu.com so that Lawrence himself has been able to rely on scholarships and money earned from odd jobs in recent years.

Therefore, when the school did not provide dormitories for students, he could only find a place to live in the attic of a pub near the workers' area. Compared with the rooms rented by ordinary college students, the only advantage of this place is the cheap rent.

But the opposite is that all public services in this neighborhood are terrible. For example, the security of the government relies on the spontaneous maintenance of the surrounding residents. Various cases have emerged one after another. It also happens from time to time that valuable things like Lawrence are swept away after being attacked during the day.

Fortunately, this robbery happened during the day, so he only lost his property and was thrown into the sewer. If it's night, he might really start with a pair of underwear, and his equipment is all burst.

After staggering for more than ten minutes, Liang En pushed open the door of the tavern rented in Lawrence's memory. He walked into the tavern with the jingling of bells on the door.

Because it is working time, the workers who are the main consumers did not appear here, and the tavern looked empty. Only the fat boss Aunt Susan stood behind the wooden bar and wiped the shelf with a rag.

"Oh, the goddess of wealth is here." Aunt Susan turned her head when she heard the sound of the door, and saw Lawrence who was as dirty as a chicken. "Lawrence, did you fall into the sewer?"

"It's worse than that, Aunt Susan. I was thrown into the sewer after being robbed, and finally got up from the bottom." Liang En imitated Lawrence's usual tone and said, "Can you give me something? Do I provide some hot water? I think I might need a good bath."
