Chapter 11 Meet a Scholar on the Way

On the third day after Chen Sheng left, Li Fuyao packed up and closed the courtyard door.

 

Standing at the door, Li Fuyao carried a large bag and laughed in a low voice, “Maybe I won’t come back in the future. In the past, I always thought Baiyu Town is really small and I could wander everywhere in a short time. But now I am unwilling to leave here.”

 

Qing Huai had nothing in her hands and ignored him. She just held her chest with both hands and looked the small courtyard up and down.

 

After they walked less than one hour, they would go out of this town. Li Fuyao turned his head and looked at this small town for the last time under the morning sun and then left.

 

There was an official road outside Baiyu Town, and it was the only way to the outside world, so they chose this road. The Sword Mountain was on the border between Yanling City and Dayu, and it was in the north of Dazhou Empire. Therefore, on this trip, Li Fuyao planned to walk northward to the border of Dazhou and then enter Yanling. Later he would turn to the east and get to the Sword Mountain. After they reached the border between Yanling and Dayu, Qing Huai would have to cross Dayu before going to Liangxi.

 

Li Fuyao just learnt a little about the gifted Dao cultivator from Qing Huai’s few words. Later, Chen Sheng specially mentioned that cultivator and told a lot of information about her, so Li Fuyao kept much in his mind. Qing Huai was a demon outside the human world, so she knew less about this world than Chen Sheng.

 

But the more he knew about that gifted Dao cultivator, the more Li Fuyao believed that the woman was abnormal, so he was naturally worried as Qing Huai said she would go to challenge her. However, Li Fuyao was clear that Qing Huai didn’t want to hear that, so he was wise and didn’t mention it.

 

When Li Fuyao was far away from Baiyu Town, he saw some different scenery. He would find a tea house beside the official road every few miles and see many strangers.

 

They even saw a troop of riding soldiers passing quickly on the official road. Li Fuyao didn’t feel surprised, but Qing Huai was curious.

 

With the bag on his back, Li Fuyao walked next to Qing Huai and whispered, “Our emperor in Dazhou rules a small territory, but he is ambitious and has started many wars these years. It’s said that most of the territory of the neighboring country, the Lu Kingdom has been occupied by Dazhou. Maybe the Lu Kingdom will be destroyed this year. I don’t know whether the emperor in Dazhou would start a war to conquer Dayu and Liangxi if he becomes the emperor of Yanling.”

 

Qing Huai shook her head and responded calmly, “The victory of the war between two small countries will be decided by human lives. Confucianism and Daoism are behind Yanling and Liangxi. If there will be a war, it will be a fight between the cultivators of the two religious sects. If one party appears to be inferior, the sages of either sect will probably get involved. Then the sages of two sects would fight against each other. Who knows what will happen?”

 

Li Fuyao didn’t say anything but thought of Chen Sheng’s words, who said that there was no immortal in the human world in the past six thousand years might because the world had been broken. If the sages took actions, would the world sink after they fought?

 

Qing Huai changed the subject and asked, “You are not from Dazhou. Why did you say our emperor in Dazhou?”

 

Li Fuyao stretched out his hands to show that he didn’t know.

 

Qing Huai stopped talking and continued to walk.

 

They walked along the official road and passed a small town. Qing Huai just told Li Fuyao to buy some food and they didn’t enter the town. As she said, this small town was not safe.

 

After they left the small town far away, Li Fuyao asked cautiously, “Are there mountain fairies and wild demons?”

 

Qing Huai held her chest with both hands as usual and said with no emotion, “There are no mountain fairies and wild demons, but you should know that there are lonely ghosts in this world.”

 

Li Fuyao made a living by telling stories in Baiyu Town these years and had told stories many times about female ghosts hooking up with scholars, so he was familiar with that, but he had just known that there were demons in this world. He didn’t think that there were ghosts.

 

Qing Huai explained patiently, “Demonic cultivators are cultivators anyway and can come to an end on that way, but the lonely ghosts are not cultivators. After they died, they didn’t give up for some reason or disappear in the human world in time. In this state, the lonely ghosts are scared to be exposed to the sun and it’s difficult for them to harm somebody. They can only frighten somebody. Of course, some ghosts with luck can continue to walk, but at last they have to hide in human bodies and keep their souls. Otherwise, they can’t get to the end of that way.”

 

Li Fuyao frowned, “How about we go to have a look?”

 

Qing Huai replied expressionlessly, “No problem. Anyway, I can walk with you for two months at most. After two months, I will go to Liangxi at full speed. If you aren’t afraid that you can’t go to the Sword Mountain, you can go to have a look.”

 

Hearing Qing Huai’s words, Li Fuyao soon said firmly, “We’d better continue to walk and hurry up.”

 

Qing Huai just smiled.

They continued their journey. In fact, they just walked for half a day, and then Li Fuyao met a young scholar dressed in shabby clothes in an isolated place beside the official road. But this scholar was weird. He held a book and carried a machete on his back.

 

When he saw Li Fuyao and Qing Huai, this young scholar with a pretty face and slender figure was having a rest on a big bluestone. Seeing Li Fuyao approaching, the scholar got up abruptly and stood in front of him.

 

Li Fuyao was surprised and wondered if this man was a robber.

 

But soon, the scholar saluted Li Fuyao respectfully and asked, “Sir, do you know how far away Zhuyu Town is from here?”

 

Hearing the two words Zhuyu Town, Li Fuyao frowned automatically because this town was the unsafe town Qing Huai had mentioned.

 

Li Fuyao kept silent for a while and then asked, “Sir, what are you going to do in Zhuyu Town?”

 

The young scholar heard Li Fuyao’s question and soon smiled, “So you must know where Zhuyu Town is. Can you lead the way and go there with me?”

 

Li Fuyao didn’t reply but looked at him.

The scholar thought of Li Fuyao’s question and then straightened his back, continuing seriously, “To be frank, I am going to Zhuyu Town to snatch a bride.”

 

Li Fuyao pursed his lips and glanced at the machete on the young scholar’s back, asking with uncertainty, “Sir, you are going to snatch a bride?”
