Surviving Zombies One Day At Time

Chapter 1 - The dream and reality

The clock made so much noise that she had to jump out of her bed. Lately, she felt somehow heavy. Those dreams just started appearing again.

Maybe she read to many horror stories and watched too many scary movies?

No matter what the reason is, those dreams are getting closer to reality. She was starting to get nervous. The same things keep appearing in it.

Beautiful meteorite shower, the night of the red moon, fog in the morning and then the day of zombies. That kind of dream repeated now for the third time and now Jenny was feeling like it was more prediction than a simple dream.

She sighed. She was just a small worker in the storage area of one of those big stores. She was neither rich or capable.

"Should I just waste my savings and go buy food and other stuff? I can just buy some food, with a long shelf life. In case I just miscalculated there is that option to eat it off. I can still ask a few companies to sell me food cheaper." She could still eat it off.

She stepped on the balcony of her apartment and sighed. Since grandma died she inherited just this place. The top floor of an old building.

There were two positive sides to it, beautiful view and huge balcony as the whole top floor belonged to her now. Her parents got the big house and lands but still fought with her on-court about this place.

Sometimes she feels it strange, are they even hers? The way they acted since she was born, sometimes she really doubted them.

Never mind. Let's try it out. If she prepares a bit, it won't get wasted anyway.

She looked at her two empty guest rooms and choose to fill them with food, some heating materials, and many other things.

After some planing and cleaning, she put working clothes on and went out. She saw her solar panel that she used only to warm up her water. Maybe one more? Satellite phone? What else? Weapons? She shrugged, why not?

She knew someone in a neighborhood that was dealing with weapons.

At her work was not very busy so she let her thoughts fly around.

"Jennifer! Come here, I have a question?" Her boss called her into the main office with a smile.

A sigh came out of her mouth. Will she get fired?

But something else actually happened. She stood in front of him all frozen.

"Are you sure that you are asking me? There are many that worked longer." Her voice became a bit thin from excitement.

''I am sure. There are only two who work longer than you here and you know how they hate this job." Who likes it tho, was in her mind while she stiffly smiled at him.

Then a thought passed her mind. "Boss, I heard that the company is giving loans to long-term employees. I really need to renovate my apartment. With a new job, I'll be able to pay it back soon."

Being chief of staff was a bit more stressful, but she didn't have to worry about many other things. Of course, she would accept. In this company, she was just a few years and got this job.

The reason? Not many people liked this job and would search for new as soon as they could. But for her, it was still the best job. No ability, no good school finished and average looks.

Her boss knew her situation and sighed. " You can, but there is a limit. I don't know will it be enough for the renovation tho. " Those are microloans for smaller things. The company chose to give loans but small ones for personal use, and with low rates so they could pay it off without feeling to much pain in their daily lives.

"I know. I'll just repair a few things. I can paint and brush walls myself. A microloan is not a big issue." She flashed a smile at him while thinking about the quick loan she plans to take from her bank.

" When do you need it?" He took the loan contract out his safe.

"Today. I can call electrician on my break and he can be thereafter I'm done here. I anyway have a few days free left from last year. I'll just take a small vacation, take care of my place and start a new working place in three or four days. I have no idea how much leftover days I have." She was not clear as she never took linger vacations.

He shook his head while looking at her. "You still have two weeks left from last year. Use it. Come back with new energy. And I'll give you today afternoon free. Go home right away. If you take workers after working hours, they might calculate you a overtime. No need for that. Go. Here the paperwork. Bring it to the accounting office and you'll get a check. I wrote the biggest sum we can approve of."

She grateful gave him a big smile and got serious on her way to her working place. Her coworkers were used to her serious nature so they just ignored it anyway.

"Boss gave me half a day off. So I'll let you all have fun without me." She joked and happily left them standing there.

After she got out of the accounting office she realized what he meant with a microloan. It was just a two thousand dollar loan. But for all that she wanted, that was just not enough.

What else, taking a loan as it seems...
