Chapter 67 - War!

Tang Ling knew that the broadsword was precious. Even extremely precious. It was even said in the description: "A northwind blade is one of the rarest and most prized blades you can find in Jianghu." Although he was sure that it was not the best blade in the world (take Master Gu's sword for example), it would be extremely rare and was hailed as one of the best in Jianghu.

The effects were also magical. His attacks could now be regarded as 'supernatural' and are able to fight incorporeal forms. His sword was also sturdier, capable of effectively block attacks and cut through weapons with minimal regard to durability.

These two attributes would be enough to be called a superior weapon, well above his Gentleman Straight Sword. But Determination made it a dream weapon for him. This was two ranks above his previous sword.

If he activated Determination, even a damn Burst Gun wouldn't faze him.

Over the days he had been with the other disciples, he had learned that even Uncommon weaponry was rare. People often traveled with fine swords but with no distinct features. Fine weapons would be heirlooms passed in peasant families while Uncommon ones were heirlooms of well-off families in the city or minor noble families. At the rank of Magic, it would become an heirloom passed from generation to generation, while at the rank of Rare, it could be considered to be a great treasure. Heck, even the Rose of Shengdong only had a Rare weapon for her use and from the rumors, she was one of the most outstanding talents in her family.

It's a pity that although she had shown her weapon in the battle with the wolves, Tang Ling had been too preoccupied with his battle to catch a glimpse of this weapon. Thus, he had no idea where his Rare weapon ranks. Nonetheless, to give a disciple a Rare weapon is a great generosity on his part.

Simple thanks couldn't express his gratitude for the gift.

...

As he was busy with his daily tasks, he had noticed that the undercurrents surging. The once cheerful neighbor across the street became quiet. The landlady came in with a stern face and a wrinkled paper behind her back. Civilians outside the slums began to show worried faces. Even the guard standing on the watchtower felt like he just ate sh*t.

As the days passed, news of war spread from circles to circles until pretty much everybody knew about it. This started with the rise in violence in the slums to outright protests from proper citizens.

However, this didn't change anything. Although the mayor came out and said that the war will impact the citizens of Bao Feng, it didn't fool the majority. By 'citizens', he meant the middle-class of the city, not the slum-dweller, and by 'will not impact', he meant not sent into the war. It didn't mean that they wouldn't suffer any economic repercussions.

Sure enough, on the seventh day, they came.

Knock! Knock!

Tang Ling opened the door, hiding behind him was his sister. In front of the door, two grown men were standing there. There were not that threatening but the professional impression made him realize that they are strong.

"You have been conscripted into upcoming war. Please leave with us or we will take you by force."

...

Tang Ling did not fear the two men. Although they were part of the Prince's army, they were far weaker than him in terms of physical prowess. In close proximity with them, if he struck first, they would not have time to take off their pistols before he crushes their necks.

The fact that he didn't fear the two soldiers did not mean that he did not fear the force behind them.

Just like how people obediently paid their taxes, he obediently followed them as they grouped up many other people like him and then were directed to go to the camp outside of the city.

Here, they ordered to stand in line and as the other conscripts came along, a handsome man walked on the temporary podium in front of them.

"Hum, hum. Welcome, conscripts! Seeing that some of you are still confused, I will brief you on your situation. Last week, the Prince conquered 20 minor cities like yours and celebrated this decisive victory. However, the Second Price did not like that very much and decided to retaliate, bringing quite a bit with him. Here's where you come into the picture, essentially, you're cannon fodders."

There was an uproar in the group. Cannon fodder? Who would accept such fate when they were f.o.r.c.i.b.l.y given this role without their consent?

Some tried to escape but were immediately suppressed by the surrounding soldiers.

[Division 98 Soldier LV 10]

[Division 98 Soldier LV8]

[Division 98 Lieutenant LV15]

The weakest of the Division was LV8 while the average level was about LV10.

In comparison, the low level on the part of the conscripts made him unable to disagree that they are truly "cannon fodder".

He then turned at the commander on the platform and inspected him.

[Division 98's Major, Grant Earlse LV 35 Fluxer]

[Additional Description: Brokang's Empire 98th Division Major and young master of the Earlse family, Grant Earlse has shown some potential in his awakening, resulting in him joining the military. After two years of service, he had advanced into the prestigious class of Major of a special division and is now on his way to Lieutenant Colonel!]

An LV 35 Fluxer?!

"Calm down!" He shouted as his troops pointed their guns at the crowd, "Do not try to resist! Fighting will give you a chance to live while resisting means certain death!"

He then waved his hand, "Not to mention, we won't leave you defenseless. You will be given training and equipment for the job. You will be rewarded 500 credits!"

The group of cannon fodder cheered at the thought of gaining 500 credits. I mean, they would be given equipment and training. It should mean that there is a 50% chance of survival, right? It's worth risking their lives for!

Tang Ling felt something wrong. There was nothing wrong with the major's words but the group's reaction shouldn't be so dramatic.

'Not leave you defenseless. You'll get training and equipment. A reward of 500 credits.'

'However not leaving you defenseless, training and equipment does not change the fact that we're cannon fodders. And the huge reward of 500...'

Tang Ling narrowed his eyes, 'The reward of 500 credits will only be given to survivors! After all, there are no guarantees and there are incentives to kill us all!'

Tang Ling looked at the honest-looking smile on the major's face and felt a chill.

There were no more indications needed to understand the situation. He was definitely using them as "cannon fodders"!
