Talk To Dragons

Chapter 2 - Meeting - 2

Violet ignored the curiosity of their communication and put her right hand on the cage. With a little squeeze, the metal quickly grew hot and she was able to rip it apart as if it were soft clay. With a few handfuls of melted cage, the dragon crawled out and sat next to her on the soft ground.

"Thank you very much, Violet," Engel thanked her. "I am in your debt."

"No, don't say that," Violet replied. "I don't like people owing things to me."

"Fair enough," Engel said. "Why are you out in this forest alone? Is your mother or father nearby?"

The question made Violet think back to what she had been walking through the forest for, but no memory came. Instead of what she had been fixated on during her sorrowful journey, she could come up with only a feeling of forgetfulness.

"I can't remember," she answered the dragon.

"Remember what?" Engel asked.

"Why I'm here," Violet answered. "Or, anything about my parents. Although I swear I just knew. Do you emit some sort of memory loss poison?"

"No," Engel replied. "I'm a dragon from the Sii Mountains, far from here. We're magical like all dragons, but I don't have a power like that. The ability my species possesses is changing our size to fit our needs."

Violet tried to grasp what Engel meant.

"Then why didn't you just grow bigger to get out of the cage?" she questioned. "Or grow smaller to crawl out yourself?"

"This is the smallest I can get," Engel explained. "And I've been stuck this small for about a year now. I can't figure out how to get big again."

"Oh," Violet said. "Well, since I can't remember why I'm here, why are you here?"

"I've been on a journey away from home," Engel answered. "Nothing dramatic or official. I just left home and wanted to live a life of my own away from the freezing mountains. This is my third day on my own. I suppose I'm off to a terrible start."

Violet looked at the dragon blankly before staring off into the forest. Her mind had been completely emptied of any explanation she looked for.

"Were you going somewhere in particular?" Violet asked Engel.

"Well, I had heard from my mother that there is a mountain range somewhere that is inhabited by the elf people," Engel explained. "I wanted to go there because their cities are always supposed to be incredibly beautiful. Other than that, I don't really have much direction."

"Then I guess we'll just try and find that place together," Violet said.

"You want to travel with me?" Engel questioned.

"I have no idea why I'm here or what I'm doing," Violet answered. "I may as well."

"All right then," Engel said. "Well met, friend. Let's find us an elf city."
