Targaryen Who Turned Dragon

Chapter 3 - The Successor

"She's a pretty one," Robb smirked

"Let me see."

I take the spyglass and take a look. It was a galley ship that had a very small amount of real soldiers. A merchant ship. Robb was right, she's pretty and full of goodies. Time to take her goods.

"She is pretty indeed. Battle positions!"

Everyone got into their positions. All fifty of them. It's a good sight, twenty were on the oars while the other thirty were archers. Then something unexpected happened. The merchant surrendered before we even attacked!

"Captain, something about this feels... strange."

"I agree, but free gold is still gold."

We boarded the merchant galley with ease. Still... something about this made me uneasy.

"Hand over your goods... and we will leave."

A smile appeared on the merchant's face.

"You wish... pirate."

"...?"

This was an unusual reaction, normally they would just give me their money, goods and food. Why is this different... perhaps something is giving him confidence... what... a patrol! This was an ambush all along!

Fifty flaming arrows dived towards the Mad King and the merchant ship. I had no shield... then the previous Lord of Bloodstone gave me one. I managed to protect myself in time. Most of my men also had shields ready, so the attack didn't do much.

"It would be quite unfortunate if the newly appointed Lord died to a puny patrol... come, let's take them to hell!"

The ex-Lord is a charismatic man, not surprising. Two westerosi galleys charged and rammed into the Mad King. This battle will be a fun, bloody mess.

I drew my sword and blocked a slash aiming for my head. I smacked his head with my shield and threw him off the merchant ship. He screamed and dropped into the water, I hope he can swim.

Then Duncan and the Jackdaw arrived. The battle tipped heavily into our favour.

Two westerosi ganged up on me. The braver one charged and got blocked by my shield. Then the other attacked me from my left side. I stepped to the right and stabbed the braver one's left arm. I drew my sword out of his arm and heard him scream. It was not exactly pleasant. I tried to end his misery but his friend started attacking me. I block all of his strikes with my shield, and when I saw the opportunity... I stabbed his leg. He, too, screamed. I quickly threw him off the ship with my shield.

"Damn you... damn you... you killed my friend!"

Well, not really. As long as he can swim, he can make it... oh wait... his leg isn't fairing too well.

I make quick work of brave westerosi. He would have been a fine pirate under me...

Before I even knew it, the battle was over. Twenty-five westerosi soldiers and ten merchants remained and they were all on their knees. We lost around fifteen men and they lost forty! This turned out better than expected... perhaps I will take these two galleys with me instead of selling them off.

"What do you think, Duncan? Should I sell the sh.i.p.s or keep them?"

"I suggest you keep 'em. The more sh.i.p.s, the more men. Only sell sh.i.p.s when you desperately need gold."

"Thank you for your advice, Duncan. I shall follow it."

I convinced the westerosi to join me. The merchants... they weren't as fortunate. I left Duncan to find three suitable captains for the new galleys. Five galleys and a hundred and ten men. That makes twenty-two per ship... I need more pirates. We quickly sell the goods at Dorne and leave.

Then we went on recruiting near Storm's end for a whole month. Now the Mad King's Navy consists of eight galleys and three hundred men.

"My Lord," Duncan approached me.

"I think we should return to Bloodstone... long enough for the heat to wear off."

"Patrols are increasing in size and quantity..." Robby added

"Very well, we shall sail to Bloodstone."

The journey to Bloodstone was short and sweet. Unlike last time, there was a ship anchored to the port. It's probably a pirate ship.

We anchor to the port and I go straight to the castle... I need a long, deserved rest. I leave my captains to deal with the rest. I enter my bedchamber for the first time and sleep on the bed. Feels so good not being on a ship twenty-four hours a day. I don't hate the sea, but I prefer land. Still, raiding sh.i.p.s feels pretty damn good. Pirating is an interesting occupation with many surprises and adventures... and a lot of money making. I've made a bloody fortune.

~The next day~

I got out of bed, did the usual morning stuff and entered the throne room. Robb stood beneath the throne... waiting for me?

"My Captain, you have awoken at last. The pirate ship that didn't belong to us? Well, they have pledged allegiance to your great cause. Duncan wishes to lead an expedition... in your honour."

"Lead an expedition? What will I do..."

"Captain, you need to rest for a while. You have been overworking yourself for a long time..."

"Alright, alright. I will rest. How long will this expedition last?"

"A week to ten days, not long."

Hopefully, I won't miss too much.

"I give my consent... will you go as well?"

"Yes, Captain."

"Very well, good luck to you. Don't trip on your sword."

He smiled and left "I won't."

Then I was alone in the throne room. A week to ten days... hopefully, this expedition works out as Duncan planned. Damn it, I can't manage to sit still... I have to do something. Maybe I should explore this castle.

Bloodstone castle is bigger than it looks. The amount of rooms is astonishing. The dragon patterns on the walls... they remind me of Dragonstone.

After some minutes of looking around, I discover a secret entrance in the library. The library itself was nothing special apart from its ancient books, I see nothing valuable. The secret entrance was in between two bookshelves. It was well hidden.

I press on the button with my hand. The wall goes back and turns to the left, welcoming me inside. I accept its offer and enter. There was no light ahead... so I took a torch from the library and continued forward. After a few meters, I was met with a round staircase. I carefully walked down. It seemed like the stairs were never-ending. It took me about ten minutes to reach the bottom of the stairs. Whatever is down here better be worth the walk.

Why would someone build such a long staircase... I wonder, what did they try to hide? Perhaps, this was all a joke and I will be met with a letter calling me a fool. Oh well, time to found out.

I open the door in front of me and look around.

It was a large hall that was darker than the night. How did the builder manage to make such a long staircase and not have some sort of source of light down here? Wait, there's a sign. I move closer and my torch's light allows me to read it.

"The Blood of Valyria shall alight the Hall"

Blood of Valyria? Targaryens come from Valyria... let's see if the sign is telling the truth. I draw my sword and make a small cut on my arm. A few drops of my blood drop to the floor. The instant that the blood hit the floor, flames alighted the Hall. I could see everything in the Hall now. Then a Dragon made of the fire rose. It had no scales, no bones and no flesh... it was made of pure fire. Its red eyes glowed and stared at me.

"At last... a High Valyrian has entered these Halls, I was afraid the day would never come. What brings you here, Boy?"

"What... what are you?"

"I am The Dragon God of Fire. All Valyrians, and Dragons, share my blood... I am their ancestor."

"Dragon God of Fire... what are you doing here?"

"I foresaw the Reconqueror coming here many years ago... since then I have waited for his arrival."

The Reconqueror? What kind of title is that? Who is this Reconqueror? Aegon The Conqueror... the Reconqueror would have to be a Targaryen. If it's not me, then... Viserys or Dany. Perhaps I should bring them here. Or... it could be a future descent. Then the Dragon read my mind.

"Fool, you always overthink things. It's clearly you. Viserys is unfit to be a King and Daenerys is a woman. What that Mad King has lost, you shall regain. I have waited for a whole century for your arrival. Now that I have seen you first hand... I can safely trust you with what remains of me. You are only half High Valyrian... with my power, I shall make you a true Dragon. A Dragon like no other, you shall make the Dragonlords look like harmless lizards. I am afraid it is time for me to burn out... like all fire does. May the World tremble under your might, Dragon Emperor... my successor"

The flames around the Fire God grew and grew. Filling the entire hall with flames. Then the flames entered my body as if I was absorbing it. The flames didn't burn me at all, in fact, they made me stronger.

Then I lose all my strength and fall...
