The Burning Fiend

Chapter 22 - The Caravan

Joining the caravan proved no trouble, they were happy to have them as the saw the giant velocidragon with awe. Reynolds choose to not take a carriage they would just travel with Koral and walk when she needed hunting.

Reynolds was seating on Koral's back and Windsor was on his l.a.p while stroking her hair as one would with a pet. Koral walked leisurely next to Keane's carriage. The old man was sitting next to the driver while the siblings were inside the carriage. "Old man Lambert, why are you traveling to the O'Brien Empire?". Asked Reynolds as he kept petting Windsor.

The old man felt that there was no reason to hide and perhaps they could even get help. He decided that Keane approach was wiser at the end and tried to sound distressed as he said. "Their half brother died and Keane will take his place as governor of the city by orders of the family". Reynolds noticed the tone and the lack of something important in that statement. "Things are not as simple as that, right?" The old man smiled wryly and said. "Their aunt is the acting governor of the city and she would not give up her position willingly".

Reynolds smiled and said. "So you are taking them there to die, I see." He paused for a moment and then said "Tell me Windsor, would you like to have a sister? If they are walking to their deaths it would be a shame for such a pretty girl to die, wouldn't it be better if a take her as maid?" The old man had frozen at that. He had thought that the young man might take the initiative to protect the two siblings, but he just thought of them as already death.

Windsor melodious voice took the old man out of his naive ideas. "Master, your slave would follow you as long as you don't leave me behind... if she becomes my sister, can I play with her as well?". On the last part of her answer her voice turned mischievous. Reynolds laughed and said. "Well I guess my most obedient pet could help train the new one, isn't it?" Windsor's eyes were sparkling at the tought of 'teaching' her new sister. "Master is the best! Your slave will make a good work and turn Jenne into an obedient pet".

The old man was regretting his words now, he should have remained quiet... how would he face his old mistress after dying? He was startled as Reynolds voice sounded again. "So this is the deal old man, Jenne is mine and in exchange I will kill the aunt. Talk to her and make your decision by tonight".

The old man was still distressed but at least things were not the worst, instead of just taking Jenne he would kill her aunt as payment for the transaction. He was buying Jenne... The old man sighed and went to the carriage to speak with Jenne.

"Master, would you take Jenne if she doesn't want to come?" Reynolds lifted her shin before kissing her forehead. "Silly girl, don't you know me better than that? I might have forced things a little with you, but still it was your own decision to become mine. If she doesn't want to become my property I would just forget about her and her troubles, in this world the strong eat the weak and the weak have no right to complain. But naive as she might be, she would not want to die and if by becoming my slave she not only saves her life but the life of her brother... I think that after tonight you will probably have a younger sister".

Windsor remained silent while thinking, she remembered how she was lured and captured by her master and realized that if she had resisted she would have ended as property of some else and she most likely would have died during the magical beasts invasion. She certainly would not be a magician as she is now. Her Master was right the weak have no right to complain and she was lucky to had been eaten by a kind master, perhaps this was one of the best possible outcomes for Jenne...

That night, Reynolds, Windsor and Koral were seating around a fire a little distance apart from the caravan. It had been a long time without meeting other people and they felt a little tired from meeting so many people today.

After a while they noticed that someone was coming their way from the caravan camp. They saw as Jenne trembled her way to them and said with fear and hesitation. "M-Master, y-your maid has come t-to greet y-you". Windsor suddenly appeared behind her with her arms around her waist and her chin resting on her shoulder startling Jenne. Her melodious voice reprimanded her. "Little sister, your words are wrong. You should say... 'Master, your slave greets you', do you understand? Now, be a good girl and said that again".

Jenne was terrified but complied. "M-Master, your s-slave greets you". Windsor smiled with pride and said. "My little sister is such a good girl". This make Jenne turn scarlet but there was no resistance.

"Come here Jenne, sit beside me." Reynolds commanded and while both women approached he took Windsor on his l.a.p and started stroking her hair. "Tell me Jenne, do you understand your situation? Do you understand what you are getting out of becoming a slave?". Jenne tried to calm down and said. "Master, your s-slave understands. By becoming your p-property I will not be killed by my a-aunt and my brother will t-take the position of city governor after my a-aunt's death".

Reynolds nodded in satisfaction and said. "Good, now look at me". As Jenne complied she saw that his eyes shinned in purple light and she entered a trance. "Jenne, did you and old Lambert lie to me?". Jenne responded with a mechanical voice. "No Master". "Did you hide something important from me? Are you planning to scape from me after your aunt dies?" Jenne responded again with the unnatural mechanical voice. "Yes Master, grandpa Lambert said that I only need to serve you until you kill my aunt and then he would inform the main family that you forced me. Grandpa Lambert said that the ancestor is a saint level warrior and he would come to kill you and free me". Reynolds voice turned a little cold. "Did you agree with his plan? What about Keane?"

"Master, I do not want to die and I don't want to be a slave but I don't want you to die either. Keane is angry and wants you to die". After along silence Windsor could not take it anymore and asked. "Master, what are we going to do?"

Reynolds sighed and said "I will kill Lambert tonight and I'm thinking of using the slaving spell on Keane to make sure his family never learns about us and that he forgets about his sister. I will keep Jenne, I will not erase her free will entirely but I would make her forget her family as punishment for the betrayal".

Windsor released a sigh and relaxed in his arms as Reynolds started modifying Jenne's will. After modifying Jenne's will and memories he left to deal with the treacherous pair as Windsor started instructing Jenne on her first meditation to find out if she had talent as a magus.

Later that night old man Lambert left the camp to relieve himself but never come back. The next day he was found on the ground not far from the camp, his body was green around what looked like a small bite mark. The leader of the caravan told everyone that old Lambert had been bitten by a snake while he had left on his own at night to relieve himself.

Jenne was now sure that she was a slave bought by young master Keane to serve as a maid and then gifted to her new Master in exchange of killing his aunt. Jenne was happy with her new Master as Keane used to hit her with a cane while playing warrior.

Keane was sad for his old servant death and also believed that Jenne was a slave he had bought a few years back when his sister died, he made her change her name to Jenne because she looked like his sister. He had been scared when instructed to go back and take the position of governor as he knew that his aunt would kill him, so he gifted Jenne to the powerful warrior he met on the caravan in exchange for his aunt's death.
