The Burning Fiend

Chapter 45 - The 11th Floor

A giant red Ba-Serpent was floating over a world made of metal, there was no apparent life on this floor and Reynolds was reminded of the guard of the 10th floor. 'Would this floor have one guardian as well? If I had known this I would have stayed longer on the lower floor to hunt'.

The red snake floated leisurely while looking for the stairs towards the next level, he had no intention to go to the next level but he suspected that the treasures would be right next to the tunnel and most likely the guardian of this floor as well.

After a few hours he found a valley that emitted a powerful aura similar to what he had felt from the Ba-Serpent on the 3rd level and wondered if the so called divine spark would be there. The valley was covered by a red fog and Reynolds was sure that this should be a trap, he smiled and left behind a few fire feathers that would help him scape in case things went wrong and dived into the red fog.

He soon found that what emitted the aura was not a divine spark but a divine corpse and out of curiosity he approached wondering if he would be able to burn it. 'Perhaps that would give me a hint to the next level... when my flames are able to destroy a divine body I should be close to achieve complete understanding regarding the law of the fire element'. He collected the divine body on his interspatial ring while a wild laugher shook the valley and Reynolds found that one of the metallic rocks turned out to be the same kind of creature that had protected the 10th floor.

He charged at it and swallowed the metallic creature that was still laughing and paid no attention to the danger, once inside the fire snake Reynolds teleported to his side piercing its head as it screamed from the pain of being burned by the temperature inside the fire construct. Reynolds noticed that the red fog remained and curiously looked as 10,000 metallic creatures flooded the sky and many others where erupting from the tunnels on the group surrounding him.

He felt cold sweat about the mere number of saints and he laughed at himself for complaining a few hours ago about the lacking number of enemies on the previous floors, he was not afraid as he was sure to escape if things went to the worst result and started thinking frustrated on how much time and trips back and forth from the 10th floor he would be forced to take before destroying so many saints.

Sighing he teleported to the previously placed fire feather and swallowed 10 metallic creatures that started screaming from the burning pain, it took him a couple of seconds to pierce the head of each saint. During that time he was attacked by nearly a hundred blades that cut the body of its fire construct without causing real damage and proceed to swallow another 10 metallic creatures while been careful about placing more fire feathers on his way.

"What are you? There are no fire attribute Ba-Serpents so this must be a fire construct and you are inside it... that's why you swallow a few children each time? To kill them once they are inside the fire construct?" Reynolds noticed that a small red metallic creature was speaking while looking puzzled without caring about him killing his brethren.

Soon another two red metallic creatures joined looking curiously at the red snake. "Anyway... kill him!" Nearly a thousand metallic creatures shot energy beams from their blades directed at him, startled he teleported to another location and swallowed another 10 saints and kept moving while the red serpent body was cut by hundreds of blades.

If looked from above one would think that thousands of ants were trying to kill a snake as they charged on groups one after another oblivious of danger, this process continued for an hour and Reynolds started feeling the strain as he had killed nearly a thousand of saints but was forced to avoid the energy attacks from time to time as their numbers seemed endless.

The three red metallic creatures just watched from above the entire process as if it amused them, so a little annoyed Reynolds decided to kill one of them. He suddenly teleported behind them and the glowing eyes of the red snake shot a couple of red beam hitting the one on the middle and proceed to swallow him before the other two reacted.

He then started making his way towards the tunnels to reduce the number of enemies he had to face at the same time, inside the fire construct the red metallic creature was screaming from the pain of its soul being burned but still managed to block 4 spear thrust before his head was pierced.

Reynolds made his way through the tunnels placing a fire feather from time to time and felt annoyed at himself for not placing one near the entrance to the 10th floor, it would not had lasted more than 6 hours but that would had been enough for get some rest from his current situation.

There was no time to rest and he kept swallowing, burning and piercing as he made his way through the tunnels and after a moment he teleported to the entrance of the tunnel and charged to another tunnel making his pursuers bewildered.

After a while he teleported again to the previous tunnel and dissipated the Ba-Serpent transforming into a few feathers that moved slowly looking for a safe place to rest while thinking on how limited his attacks were. 'I depend almost completely on physical contact to attack, even my soul attack requires that the burning needle makes contact with the enemy body to work'. He remembered that his third brother was able to produce and attack that traveled through the air in form of vibration that, even if the effect seemed less powerful than the effect of the same attack when his weapon touched his target, would be quite useful on his current situation.

'I am lucky that these creatures had not concept of soul attack of my situation would had been dire with so many of them attacking at the same time'. Reynolds was able to get some rest due to the metallic creatures looking for a giant fire snake but he knew that it would only take a couple of hours before their hunt resumes.

'To think that they see me as prey... seriously'. He started thinking in Linley's vibration traveling through the air and damaging everything in its path, and then it hit him... 'I do not need to touch the fire to feel the heat... just been close to it its enough, so that mean that the heat also travels through the air just like the vibrations third brother uses, but how?'

He created a small flame and started observing it and feeling the heat that it radiated and how the fire seemed to pulsate the heat to its surroundings and started experimenting on how to direct the heat on a single direction and how the quantity of energy released could be controled. 'Some types or flames radiate more energy that others... ' He was interrupted as several metallic creatures appeared next to him forcing him to kill them as quick as possible with his spear while looking for another place to hide. It was at moments like this that the 'Pearl of Life' made the difference as he did not need to care for their attacks as their number was not enough to destroy his body and he was able to save energy.

He soon found another place to hide while thinking on how the energy traveled from the flame to its surroundings, he created another small flame and compressed it to its maximum to the point of almost making it liquid and continue his study trying to understand if the density of the flame had an effect of the heat radiation.

After a few hours Reynolds felt that he was about to gain entry to another one of the elemental laws of fire but it would take time and perhaps he would already have killed all the metallic creatures by the time he managed to do so, he smiled and charged out for another round of killing.

My name is Schuler and I am the last of the red Abyssal Demons, I used to led our people along my two brothers and rivals but both of them died this year.

Life of the 11th floor of the Necropolis of the Gods was not bad, boring but not bad. Our people have lived here from thousands of year without having any problem except the lack of enemies to kill as our instincts prompt us to do... all that changed a year ago when a demonic fire snake appeared and started devouring our people. At the beginning we were happy thinking that surely a million of us would end up killing the snake and we would have fun doing it... the boring days were over.

But we should have realized our mistake the very fist day when the demonic serpent killed the strongest of us along with nearly a thousand of our people before retiring to rest, still we were confident of our power and even tried to pursue the demon as if we were hunters. The next day the demonic snake returned and killed another thousand of use before disappearing to rest and the next day and the next... is curious how it took us a whole 30 days to realize that we had already lost a third of our people and that we had never been able to hurt the demon at all.

It was then when the terror started, the demon never stopped no matter how much we begged it didn't even stop to listen and every few days it will become stronger... so the hunters understood that they were prey and that the demon was toying with us. We started hiding in groups afraid to be found by the demon, we managed to reduce the number of deaths for a while but soon the demon grew stronger again and its body started emitting heat making it impossible for my children to pretend to be part of the landscape as their bodies started to burn and could not help but scream in pain... thus the demon feed again on our people and again and again...

Today I'm guarding the last 4,000 of my brethren and I fear that soon our kind will be no more.
