Chapter 14: Prey Has Entered the Cave

Even after that dreamlike event, my routine remained unchanged. The routine of receiving quests to subdue advanced monsters, exterminating them, and receiving rewards was becoming established.

This time, I had to go to a remote place to kill a red dragon that was attacking a certain village.

The details of the quest, which Lua the guild hall’s receptionist told me, were as follows,

• An extremely powerful red dragon has appeared in the remote village of Ryden, near the border, and is attacking the town and its people.

• The forces of the feudal lord who rule the village of Ryden are no match for the Red Dragon, and he is looking for adventurers who will exterminate it for a hefty reward.

• The village is too far from the capital and the monsters are too strong for anyone to accept the quest.

For these three reasons, Miss Lua recommended this quest to me, and I gladly accepted.

So I got a map and a compass from the guild hall side and went to the wilderness, which was a little far from the royal capital.

“Hmm… this place is good enough.”

After confirming that there was no one around, I closed my eyes and cast a spell (just to get in the mood).

“Summon 1/2 ton truck…!”

Then a military vehicle appeared in front of me.

“As expected… even the vehicle is possible…” [TLN- Meanwhile, JP special forces are wondering who’s stealing their stuff.]

Actually, yesterday, I was so impressed by defeating the undead Nephilim that I tried summoning a vehicle in an empty field to test it out.

I got in the driver’s seat of this vehicle and started the engine.

“This will save a lot of my time!”

Saying with a smug look, I stepped on the gas pedal as hard as I could.

Ryden Village

“Kiuuuuuuuuuuu!!!”

The Red Dragon, which had been hit by my Type 91 mobile surface-to-air guided missile, fell down. Then, after I desummoned the Type 91 missile and made sure there were no people around, I summoned an anti-tank missile with strong destructive power, which I fired without hesitation.

“That’s it!”

“Kahhhhhhhh!!!!”

The Red Dragon screamed as it was engulfed in red flames and returned to dust.

“Amazing! The Red Dragon was that easy?

“It was some kind of magic bullet!”

“Yes! The speed and also the destructive power to kill the Red Dragon with only two shots… he is definitely a class 5 magician.”

“Thank you for protecting Ryden Village!”

“Thank you!”

“We finally have peace… Thank you so much.”

The villagers praised me for defeating the Red Dragon with modern weapons that used advanced technology.

As was the case when I was a member of the Special Forces, I was very happy to receive such words from the people. Special Forces did not have many opportunities to come in contact with citizens, so their words made my heart happy.

Protecting someone filled my heart.

But..

When I helped the Medici family and they turned their favors on me, I felt a different emotion than I did now.

I felt as if something deeper inside of me was being stimulated.

I wondered what that feeling was.

As I was thinking about this, a man suddenly came up to me and spoke.

“Dear adventurer! Thank you very much for slaying the Red Dragon! My name is Sachsen, the ruler of this territory.”

“Yes.”

Margrave Sachsen invited me into his home and treated me with great hospitality. One thing that struck me was how happy he, his wife, and their children looked.

This scene came to my mind as I was driving home in my truck.

“Come to think of it, there was a time when I was like that too.”

I grew up with a very close father and mother who loved me very much. But my father died during training. He received a medal for his achievements, but I never saw him again.

My mother was very sad about his death. She shed tears when she saw his picture when I was not around, but when I was around, she always smiled and hugged me tenderly.

She was a very grateful person who supported me with the pension provided by the government and the money she earned as a part-timer.

That was why I wanted to be a strong man like my father and protect my mother so that she would not feel sad.

But she passed away due to an illness.

“……”

I frowned and put strength into my hands gripping the steering wheel.

Then the three of them came to mind.

Carol and Alice, who lost their father. And Agnes-san, who cared for them very much. That beautiful mother and daughters must have had a hard time.

Of course, I didn’t know much about them. I couldn’t argue with that.

But…

Carol and Alice, who came to see me, and Agnes-san, who gently wrapped me in her big embrace.

It felt like the three of them were dear to my heart.

I unconsciously thought of that.

“Oh! Takoyaki Brother!”

“Hey! You’re not doing any business today!”

As I headed home with my quest reward in hand, I was approached by the usual two stern adventurers.

“I was on a quest today…”

“I see, I see. By the way, Brother…”

“Yes?”

“Is something wrong? You look different.”

“Is my expression strange?”

“It’s not strange, but it’s not as bright as usual…”

“Is something on your mind, you look sad?”

“Sad…”

Sad? I got a lot of money today for killing the red dragon, and the people of the village thanked me for it. I guess that’s a good thing…

“No, there’s nothing, but…”

“Oh, well then, will you be selling takoyaki tomorrow?”

“Yes, I will be selling takoyaki tomorrow.”

“Oh! That’s good news! Brother, please prepare lots of ingredients. You’re becoming famous for the takoyaki you’re selling!”

“Of course!”

“Well then, do your best!”

“Let me know if you need anything! Brother!”

With that, the two adventurers waved and walked away.

Their bodies were athletic like my subordinates and superiors, and their faces were yakuza-like, but they were good people at heart.

I was thinking that as I walked back to the inn.

“Am I sad?”

I tried to make sense of their enigmatic words, but could not find an answer.

And so I enjoyed the slow life. Life here was more relaxed than in Japan. I didn’t get quests to take down high-level monsters that often, and even if I did, it didn’t take that much time.

Whenever I have time, I set up a food stall and let everyone taste the delicious Japanese food. A week passed by as I went through this routine, and before I knew it, it was the day of the party.

A party thrown for me by the beautiful Medici ladies. I didn’t know what was waiting for me. Well, there was no deep meaning to it. It’s nothing more than a way for them to repay me for saving their lives. But really, they don’t have to return anything…

They were really kind people. They were so beautiful, pretty, and had such good personalities… I bet the man who gets married to the beautiful Medici daughters must be some kind of hero who saved his country in his previous life.

I wished for the happiness of the three of them.

Thinking of this, I took a deep breath.

Then I moved my feet and came to the gate leading to the Medici family’s mansion.

The gatekeeper’s eyes widened as soon as she saw my face, and she suddenly whispered to her subordinate. Then the one that looked like a subordinate ran quickly into the mansion as fast as she could.

The gatekeeper gave me a thumbs-up with a smug look on her face. So I bowed my head a little and gave her a silent greeting. [TLN- the gatekeeper’s gender is not mentioned, but since Medici ladies do not trust men, I’m guessing all of the servants are females.]

After a few moments, two familiar maids came to me.

“We’ve been waiting for you, Haruto-sama.” x2

The quiet Lindsey and the slightly childish Elyse greeted me formally and came to my side. Then Lindsey also came to my other side and said,

“Agnes-sama, Miss Alice and Miss Carol are looking forward to this party very much. Please enjoy this party to your heart’s content, Haruto-sama.”

Then Elyse said,

“There will be lots of delicious food, so there’s no need to be so nervous! Let’s take it easy!”

“Y-yes.”

Then the two maids led me inside.
