The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 52 - Behind the Scenes

"My lord."

"Report."

"I have finally located the target."

"Good. I suppose you know what to do then?"

"Yes."

"I have high expectations from you, #48."

"Don't worry my lord. There's no one in this world that can see me."

'My orders are set: Kill the traitor. It's a good thing that she is with the Dire Wolf. They were looking for him for a while now. That demon will be a pain though. I have to avoid it at all costs.'

A black silhouette was perching on a tree branch near where the party of Rhaxtyx was camping. They would get out of Helenia Forest in about a day so this figure had to be fast.

'Once they are out in the open, it'll be hard to find a good opportunity like this.'

He was one of the assassins of the Four Dynasties, designated as #48. He was one of the previous survivors of the experiments Miriam went through. He was also in duty for 20 cycles now so he was plenty experienced.

'I have full confidence over the traitor but Dire Wolf, it'll be hard. I have to come up with a good plan and –'

When he looked at the group again, he finally realized one thing.

'Where is the demon?'

"Hi~! Whatcha do~in?" (Rhaxtyx)

*Thump!*

"Sssss! You okay? You've fallen pretty bad!" (Rhaxtyx)

#48 fell down from the tree when Rhaxtyx appeared behind him. His eyes were wide open as he looked at Rhaxtyx looking at him with a stupid smile and waved.

'Ho- Wha?! How did he appear beside me that easily?! And why didn't I sense him?'

"Heey! I asked you a question though? You not gonna answer me? That's rude y'know. Yoisho."

Rhaxtyx jumped down from the branch and landed on his feet perfectly, without even moving a single blade of grass or making a single sound. It was like how this assassin moved. It was quite similar actually.

'The reports we've received didn't talked about something like this! Was there a mistake? No that's impossible!'

"Don't tell me you can't speak. I heard you talk to yourself just now though."

At this remark, #48's eyes became wider and quickly distanced himself from Rhaxtyx, drawing a blade in the process. This only made Rhaxtyx clap and praise him though.

*Clap clap*

"Wow! That was quite the move you had there. No sound, no wind resistance. It was as if you were one with the wind when you moved. Good job."

'He irritates me!'

#48 was really irritated by Rhaxtyx's way of talking and it was apparent in his eyes. Even Rhaxtyx, who was the worst when it was about reading the mood, understood it. That is why he smirked and spoke.

"I mean, it is obvious that you are an assassin. So do you think being this close to your target is safe?"

"That is none of your business."

"Oh! You talked! I knew you could talk! Why are you assassins like this I wonder? I mean, Miriam was like that at the beginning as well. I had to work really hard you know! It was hard but I succeeded. So what about you? Want to talk a little? You might not know but it works wonders. There's also…"

And thus, Rhaxtyx began talking. This was the first time #48 experienced something like this. He was absentminded for a while and when he returned to himself, he got angry at himself.

'How can I doze off when there's an enemy in front of me! This demon! He is good! Maybe a charming kind? Doesn't seem like it from Vulca though.'

"And therefore I decided to kill that boar and eat it. Oh? You're back! Finally. I was getting bored. So? You won't attack me?"

'This bastard!'

"I will cut that smug face in half!"

"It is usually said as 'split in half' though, you know it?"

#48 charged without making a sound and slashed his short sword at Rhaxtyx. There was no wind resistance and so the slash didn't produce any sound what-so-ever. Rhaxtyx was impressed with this because there weren't any assassins he knew of that had this much proficiency with a blade. This person in front of him was a perfect killing tool.

*Swish*

The cut only produced a sound when it slashed across Rhaxtyx's abdomen. He tried to dodge but the blade was faster than he expected. There was a small trickle of blood coming out of the cut and coloring the clothes red. On the other hand, the blade didn't have any kind of stain on it, not even a drop of blood.

"Wow! That was pretty fast! And there's not a drop on it! Impressive! You will be a good partner."

#48 was shocked to see the wound heal up so fast. Rhaxtyx then rubbed it with his hand and the clothes were repaired as well. Rhaxtyx looked at the assassin and chuckled.

"You like it? I did it after having the basic knowledge over magic laws. This was a spell I had been working on from time to time after I learned the basic rules. It is neat right?"

"I don't believe you won't die!"

#48 started waving his hand did a myriad of attacks against Rhaxtyx, all striking true. Various parts of Rhaxtyx was being cut but being healed at the same time.

"Look. It is kind of troublesome to keep my concentration on it can you stop cutting me. I can also feel pain just fine."

"What are you?!"

"Me? Well my name is Rax and I am an adventurer."

"An adventurer? Cut the crap!"

"It is true though."

"A demon claiming itself as a mere adventurer? Don't expect me to believe and die!"

"It is true that I can die but…"

At this point, Rhaxtyx's voice got deeper and #48 stopped suddenly and took a step backwards.

"You are far from able to cause a damage."

"Wha-"

Rhaxtyx's aura became different and he became hard to look at. The darkness surrounded him like a fog and his eyes started shining crimson.

"So you want to hurt my friend? I'll have you know, since he joined us, I've come to like Damian as a close friend so I'm going to give you a warning for today only. Stay away and you get to keep your small life. Understand, human?"

*Gulp*

#48 knew, for the first time in his life, what fear was like. He saw the depths of the abyss in the eyes of Rhaxtyx. But he couldn't give up, he was being watched and if he failed, heads would roll. Specifically his head. That is why, he started circulating his mana. He activated his spell and he started to turn a bit blurry. Darkness was also started surrounding him but unlike Rhaxtyx, it was to hide him, not make him menacing.

When Rhaxtyx saw this, he lifted his eyebrow and smiled.

"So that is your answer huh? Well at least you have a similar ability to me so I can use you as a practice dummy. Come at me then, I'll be waiting for you."

Rhaxtyx crossed his arms and stopped using Shadow Arts. He could still feel where the assassin was. But he chose not to make it apparent and decided to sense how he circulated his mana. He did this to earn some insights to Shadow Arts. There was a chapter in it that contained something about being one with shadows and in Rhaxtyx's imagination, it looked something similar to what this assassin did.

#48 circulated his mana and circled around Rhaxtyx for an opportunity to attack.

'What the hell? There are no gaps? I feel like he knows exactly where I am. Is he really a lowly demon as the reports suggested?'

The reports #48 was thinking about said something along the lines of this:

The culprit behind the attack on one of the border cities of Kingdom of Herron, Vulca, is a confirmed Low Tier demon. He is suspected to be in the higher positions of Low Tier so caution is suggested when facing him.

'If he was truly a Low Tier demon then why do I feel threatened? He is at least at the middle positions of Mid Tier.'

"You are not coming?"

Rhaxtyx looked around him, not seeing any moves done by the assassin. He was truly bored because he couldn't practice any spells in the forest. He looked at #48 directly and smirked.

"You are only so-so."

#48 stopped at his tracks. His forehead was sweaty and his eyes were wide. Rhaxtyx took a couple of steps towards him and lifted his hand.

"I warned you but you didn't listen. You shall carry this mistake over to your next life I suppose."

Energy gathered on his palm. There was a formless and invisible form of mana and Rhaxtyx was intending to launch it to #48. When faced with this, #48 decided that wasting anymore time and energy would be meaningless and he would risk being found out by the surrounding army or worse, being found out by the target. So he decided to retreat for now.

"We shall see who will laugh at the end."

With those words left behind, aura of #48 disappeared in the forest. Rhaxtyx dispersed the mana on his palm and shrugged his shoulders. He knew the assassin would be persistent and his last words proved that as well.

"This shall prove fun. Fufu."

For the coming days, the attempts of #48 never ceased. He would visit every night to try his luck, always seeing Rhaxtyx ready to receive him. They would fight of course. And every time they fought #48 was repelled.

'What is going on?'

Once they arrived at a small village with hops fields, he tried sneaking into the room of the traitor but was greeted by Rhaxtyx who was under her window. He smiled and spoke.

"So your target is Miriam huh? You're also from Dynasties? You guys have to better prepare than that."

'Why can't I get past him?'

"Just who are you?"

"I already told you, I'm-"

"Rax the Adventurer yeah. Stop using that fake name and tell me the truth. You were supposed to be a Low Tier High Demon yet you are at least Mid Tier Low Demon. What do you want to do in our realm and how did you enter in the first place?"

"Oh? So you have detailed knowledge about me?"

"Finally telling the truth?"

"At least you are trying to ask questions that matter. That's fine. They are still wrong though."

Rhaxtyx shook his head and opened his arms.

"You are persistent, I'll give you that. Think what you want, I don't care. I am just an adventurer and I want to see this world. I just found myself in this realm out of chance and decided to roam it."

Rhaxtyx's answer did not deny but also did not accept the fact that he was a demon. His answer made #48 dizzy. His roundabout way of talking was hard to follow. After all, Rhaxtyx found it convenient the Dynasties thinking of him as a demon. Rhaxtyx then smiled and shooed #48.

"Anyway, I'm not really in the mood for practice tonight so can you just leave?"

"Ugh."

#48's shoulders dropped and he turned around to walk away. He subconsciously activated his spell and disappeared in the night. Rhaxtyx was surprised to see him agree to what he said and smiled, thinking out loud.

"Looks like I somehow tamed him. Hehe."

#48 was also shocked at what he did but it was already too late to go back. He already used his power twice that night so he was left with no options but wait for the next night.

'This f*cking limit. Did they really have to put it? I told them it would get in the way. Haah. Either way I have to report my findings.'

And he did just that. He never stopped following them and he never stopped attempting to kill his targets but he would fail every time. Eventually, their destination was visible in the horizon. #48's every attempt was unsuccessful so he asked for reinforcements.

"You disappointed me, #48."

"I apologize but that demon's eyes can truly see through my sneak."

"Then what is the meaning behind the name 'the Sneaking Assassin'? Haah. Fine. Your reinforcements will meet you in the capital."

"I will try one last time then."

"No. You shall only observe and report from now on."

"… As you wish."

This was his last report before the day they saw the capital on the horizon. #48 was still on their tail without being noticed by others apart from Rhaxtyx. He was hiding behind a thicket while they passed by him in a horse carriage.

"Is there anything behind us, master?" (Miriam)

"Oh? Nah. It's fine. There's nothing behind us except our memories." (Rhaxtyx)

"UGH! That was terrible!" (Roman)

"..." (Miriam)

"Suddenly I feel cold" (Damian)

"Hahaha!"

Rhaxtyx then looked at him directly, locking gazes with him. He smirked and the meaning behind that is only known to the two of them.
